Rare tortoise sold openly at Indonesian expo

The most endangered tortoise in the world is being sold at an exposition in the Indonesian capital, highlighting concerns over Jakarta's illegal pet trade.

Ploughshare tortoises, of which there are fewer than 200 left in the wild, are among those on sale at the event.

Wildlife trade monitoring group TRAFFIC says that Indonesia has emerged as a major trading hub for the animals.

The trade is lucrative, with some at the event priced up to $1,700 (£1,100).

Among those being sold at the plant and animal expo were the critically endangered radiated tortoise from Madagascar, the Indian star tortoise and the pig-nose tortoise from Indonesia's northeastern province of Papua.

Sellers told Associated Press that other turtles could also be obtained for a price.

'Lack of action'

Chris Sheppard from TRAFFIC said that dealers continue to flout regulations in Indonesia to trade threatened tortoises and freshwater turtles from Africa, South America and Asia.

"Recent surveys, and this expo, have shown that the trade continues and, in fact, now involves more illegally imported species than ever," Mr Shepherd told AP.

"Dealers know full well that it is illegal and are taking advantage of the enforcement agencies' lack of action."

In 2008, the Indonesian government tightened rules on the trade, ruling that all tortoise and turtle species listed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) exported to Indonesia would require an import permit.

According to a 2008 report by TRAFFIC, the supply and demand of freshwater turtles and tortoises appears to be increasing throughout South East Asia.

Now it is down to 200 !! Another "out of the hat figure" to attract reader ??
If above number is true , I think I could beat that number in the next season - I think or am I dreaming !! LOL

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger

Below quote from above link
QUOTE
According to the World Wildlife Fund, of the 3,500 tigers around the world, 1,400 are found in India and only 11 percent of original habitat remains, of which is becoming significantly fragmented and often degraded.

They (WWF , TRAFFIC ...etc ) will usually tell you these only when out for donation .....etc

QUOTE
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums estimates that up to 12,000 tigers are being kept as private pets in the USA, significantly more than the world's entire wild population, 4,000 are believed to be in captivity in Texas alone.[citation needed]

But in actual fact how huge is the world's total living tiger population !!!

that regulation is purely horse crap, nothing more than media circus played by clowns. import permit my derrière.

back in 2008, Indonesia essentially blocked all of TRAFFIC's operations after the following report was published by TRAFFIC.

http://www.traffic.org/species-reports/tra...s_mammals37.pdf

as mentioned in the January 2010 edition of National Geographic, the reason given was 'TRAFFIC attacked my country'.
that butthurt reaction is so /k/ material.

Its all about how to share the knowledge, the more you understand the more you love them and participate to care how endangered rather than say " I have rare collection "

Its all about educate people rather than scare them to death of huge penalty but people not knowing anything and what to do with endangered.

I rather educate people " Buying mean Killing them " simple right..
Authority sometimes have double standard in fact in the end because they human being too and always chance to make little bit luck by misstreated man power, infact almost all authorities doing the samething.

Just enjoying what you've got and give the best care so Tortoise you have enjoying life with you.
