Thx man...
my Istar is around 2", every morning and evening I let him sunbath...so no worries about calcium + D3, rite? hahaha...
wrong smile.gif

sunlight do provide uvb that is used to synthesize vitamin D3, but it's not a source of calcium

but foods (hibiscus, ocra, weeds) inside got calcium dy rite?..so sun bathing + good foods, enough?

I read somewhere...giving them Calcium supplement might be harmful...

in the wild, herbivorous tortoises do eat animal matters and/or minerals to compensate their calcium needs (even though the plants they consumed contained higher amount of calcium and better Ca:P ratio compared to cultivated plants).

discussions on harmful calcium supplements usually revolves around the balance of Calcium:Phosphorus ratio in supplements, in which there are brands out there with even 1:0 ratio. this ratio is better than supermarket greens which have higher phosphorus count as additional P is added through fertilizer.

as for calcium OD, yup, it is possible but it is almost unheard of compared to calcium deficiency. OD shouldn't be any problem if supplements are given in moderation.

From my own little humble experience it's usually the vitamin part doing the overdosing harm !!
*
yes right. as i said, calcium OD is almost unheard of.

most new keepers give out too much vitamin. the worst case is combining uvb light with D3 supplement - surefire OD.

( what humble little experience... if your experience is little, ours are miniscule smile.gif )

QUOTE
used to have lots of them now no more"

i heard about that. sorry for the loss sad.gif

QUOTE
can u recommend me a good supplement?..how bout exo terra's calcium + D3 supplement??

haven't tested exoterra's supplement, haven't even checked them out as they are relatively new.

many keepers swear by repcal.

(note : if your turtles bask alot under sunlight, opt for supplements without D3)

What I meant was the Calcium + D3 supplement..biggrin.gif

to be honest, I dunno what is the harmful part of overdosing Calcium...I just read it somewhere that it's not good to supply additional Calcium supplement, because they already get their Calcium from their foods(Hibiscus, weeds, grass, bla bla bla)...

and for the D3, frequent sun bathing in the morning and evening is enough...(that's what I read)..

dun ask me where I read it..biggrin.gif

I read a lot of different sources, and I forgot where I read it..LOL (too many dy..biggrin.gif )

no worries. we all started out small smile.gif

that's called pyramiding. there are many articles on them on the internet. smile.gif

as a general rule, proper diet/husbandry will prevent extreme pyramiding.

for your 2" stars, daily feeding is recommended.

twice a day is ok if given in smaller amount (as opposed to one big meal per feeding).

once they hit 3"- 4" feeding frequency can nicely be adjusted (every other day), and bigger specimens can be fed thrice weekly, etc.

is it possible that tortoise know their owner??..

yes.

they would learn to recognize your sight, voice, smell etc and associate them with food, not comfort smile.gif

a lot. and the fines and consequences would cost even more.

we should scrap all discussions about no-export quota animals.

let's get back to discussing red eared sliders smile.gif

anyone who did those will get whacked by conservationists and purists.

hybrids serve no purpose other than personal satisfaction and bragging rights.

(tell that to those darn cateater/bateater breeders )

guys, please refrain from doing sales in discussion threads. it is quite apparent that people tend to overlook the RnR of this section.

you could always open a sales thread at Pet Store section and have it linked to your siggy.

thank you.

yes i am proud. now i need a blue-eyed eastern European to broaden the gene pool in my progenies.

What will happen if i feed my Star only with Okra?

nutrient imbalance. equivalent to feeding a kid with chickadees exclusively. both specimens will end up having miserable lives.

how come the star become legal to rear?
when i was young, about 10years back.my friend told me that,it is illegal to have star tortoise.
beside that,it is very expensive to maintain the star tortoise...
*
Nice to have someone to note that.

Star tortoise is protected under CITES Appendix II, India's Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Sri Lanka's Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance of 1938 and Pakistan's Sind Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1972 BUT NOT Perhilitan's Protection of Wild Life Act 1972. In plain English, the tortoises are protected from international trade and in their native range but not here in Malaysia.

All these while, although the authorities knew that those tortoises are smuggled in, there is no single act of law that could implicate the offenders. But things are going to change real soon.

To those who still have not applied for the permission to keep *CITES-listed animals under the new INTESA rules, please contact your nearest Perhilitan office as soon as possible to get your animals **legalized. And please note that this permission is strictly for private keepers, not traders.

Thank you.

*refer to CITES website. don't ask me to list them all, as there are tonnes of them.
** at your own risk, thank you.

Perhilitan could not confirm to me that applicants will be safe..there goes my confidence.
we need to attract the attention of the mass media towards the matter.

once it come under public scrutiny, i.e. in the The Star etc with proper response from the director, those ikan bilis could not simply bend the law towards their liking.

no need to ask the star to make an article on the matter.

we could always send letters via email to the editor to be published in the views section. the more the merrier, so that they will take this problem seriously.

i've checked the application status for the special permit - seems that some goverment agencies had also failed in obtaining theirs.
