Yes add more ram. I bet you must be getting beachball alot. Browser will not eat alot as I have around the same tabs opening. I suspect 2GB page out is from mainly heavy photo editing

How to know memory leak, same as windows method. If a program eat 100MB when you first using it and after long usage suddenly it turn out to be eating 500MB then something amiss.

Yea...8GB is the way to go...hahaha. Mine 4GB as well but old C2D.

No need to add more i guess. More like use then wait then see...If alot and always beachball and pageouts becoming alot more then put that as first priority action.
If I'm not mistaken there are ways to make it more efficient. If I recall correctly if you use photoshop then there are option to specify scratch disk. From what I know it can increase performance but not sure if it's the case still or whether the info is right. That info maybe like more than 5 years ago...hahaha

I think someone posted a problem with google chrome. Maybe that's one possible source of your problem.
For me I have around 20-30 tabs open with my mail, itunes, torrent, ichat, amsn and lots of others but nothing major like photo editing etc. After 1 week plus of not rebooting my pageouts total out at about 80MB.
With reboot and opening all those apps again I have around 2.9GB free RAM and 0 pageouts. Just wait for the price to go down as now itself it's quite reasonable compared to last time. Well wont all tech stuff are like that.
Sorry don't now how to solve it. Just use normal Mac Office with no fancy character stuff

hey guys, i'll be getting myself the macbook pro 17" next week. This would be a big leap for me as I've been a windows user all my life. I really need the advice of you guys. I'm planning to purchase it online as there will be discount for students. These are the few upgrades i have in mind.

1. i7 processor
2. 7200rpm hard disk

However, i'm not sure about the display. Should i just go with the glossy one or opt for the antiglare one? i prefer brighter colors and have read that the colors appear to be darker on the antiglare one.
Another thing, is it worth it to upgrade to the 3 years apple care thing? Under student discount it still cost 1k.

17" will be quite heavy if you have to bring it to uni everyday. Any reason that you need 17" instead of 15"?

Applecare can be brought within 1 year and definitely worth it

I'm currently using dell's xps m1530. Although the screen's resolution is at 1600x1000, I still find it kinda small. I don't mind the weight and would prefer that I have more screen space thus my choice of the 17" one. So I should just get the apple care together with the laptop huh? Thanks for the advice.

@realpesky You should go for the anti glare screen and not the glossy one if you can afford it =) Everyone recommended it compared to the glossy. There is a thread discussing about this topic

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1394265

and if you dont mind the weight, yea go ahead and get the 17". For the apple care you dont it to purchase on the spot if you want to save a bit of money, you can purchase in between the warranty period of 1 year (even if the end of the year) but make sure get the apple plan and activate it before your 1 year ends =)

@cyberwiz Did you perform any battery calibration? Did you max out your brightness? Maybe you can try to follow apples guideline to maximise your battery usage...

Those who are running low battery performance, check if your graphic usage is always on the high-end card.

Isnt it autoswitching? If you are not using a graphic hungry app like normal surfing it shouldnt switch to the high end card right?

There seems to be some issue on "switching back" to the low end card.

There already some report on Apple forum.

I stumbled upon that thread a couple of days back. Just wanna clarify on this matter. Colors will be more vibrant on the glossy screen compared to the antiglare one right? Is it the same as the iPhone screen protector? I'm using the antiglare one and I have friends using the glossy one. The colors seem to be sharper and more vibrant on the glossy one. Damn. This is hard to decide. Haha. Do they have displays of both antiglare and glossy at any store selling mac?

Added on April 30, 2010, 11:24 amSorry for this noob question. Is matte and antiglare the same thing?

Just received my 13" this morning. Ecstatic! rclxms.gif

Pictured here next to my housemate's 15" i7 Anti-glare screen.

Both screen looks fine but my glossy display does reflect backlight (duh). Color is very, very nice and lively though. As some have commented, it does look slightly better than the anti-glare display. This being my first mac, I'm still getting used to Mac OS. I'm wondering if I should partition the hd as boot camp doesn't seem to work with a partitioned primary hd.

Will be posting unboxing pix if I have the time.
