hey guys, i'll be getting myself the macbook pro 17" next week. This would be a big leap for me as I've been a windows user all my life. I really need the advice of you guys. I'm planning to purchase it online as there will be discount for students. These are the few upgrades i have in mind.
1. i7 processor 2. 7200rpm hard disk
However, i'm not sure about the display. Should i just go with the glossy one or opt for the antiglare one? i prefer brighter colors and have read that the colors appear to be darker on the antiglare one. Another thing, is it worth it to upgrade to the 3 years apple care thing? Under student discount it still cost 1k.

QUOTE(jphlau @ Apr 30 2010, 07:43 AM) 17" will be quite heavy if you have to bring it to uni everyday. Any reason that you need 17" instead of 15"? Applecare can be brought within 1 year and definitely worth it I'm currently using dell's xps m1530. Although the screen's resolution is at 1600x1000, I still find it kinda small. I don't mind the weight and would prefer that I have more screen space thus my choice of the 17" one. So I should just get the apple care together with the laptop huh? Thanks for the advice.

QUOTE(tarvalslain87 @ Apr 30 2010, 09:03 AM) @realpesky You should go for the anti glare screen and not the glossy one if you can afford it =) Everyone recommended it compared to the glossy. There is a thread discussing about this topic http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1394265and if you dont mind the weight, yea go ahead and get the 17". For the apple care you dont it to purchase on the spot if you want to save a bit of money, you can purchase in between the warranty period of 1 year (even if the end of the year) but make sure get the apple plan and activate it before your 1 year ends =) @cyberwiz Did you perform any battery calibration? Did you max out your brightness? Maybe you can try to follow apples guideline to maximise your battery usage... I stumbled upon that thread a couple of days back. Just wanna clarify on this matter. Colors will be more vibrant on the glossy screen compared to the antiglare one right? Is it the same as the iPhone screen protector? I'm using the antiglare one and I have friends using the glossy one. The colors seem to be sharper and more vibrant on the glossy one. Damn. This is hard to decide. Haha. Do they have displays of both antiglare and glossy at any store selling mac? Added on April 30, 2010, 11:24 amSorry for this noob question. Is matte and antiglare the same thing? QUOTE(cscheat @ May 3 2010, 11:32 PM) that is the temp before the heat build up ! all 2010 Macbook Pro user can try ! go Facebook using Safari and play CAFE WORLD for 15mins ! Seriously mate? I'm planning to order the MBP 17 i7 next week. I've already read that it might have heat issues. I'd understand that if the laptop is under strain, but 15 mins of cafe world? I've never used mac in my life so i don't know if this is normal

QUOTE(lexcorp @ May 4 2010, 07:42 AM) Its Cool Mate , Its Cool. The MBPs are made out of aluminium , so it is expected to feel hot. Its a good thing you know , so that the heat is not trap inside the laptop. Nwy Have a nice day = ) Cheers Owh, so the problem is more to that the MBP is built from aluminium? Should be ok then. I have this Zalman notebook cooler and i think it's able to cool the bottom part of the laptop pretty well. QUOTE(mememe12 @ May 4 2010, 09:47 AM) wah.. u mean using win7 in MBP? If possible I wouldn't even wan to install windows.. Heard that it messes up the com after a while. My friend dual boot his lappie to play WOW and now even when he's running OSX it becomes laggy. sorry for the noob question. Is OSX = Snow leopard? or is it one version before the Snow Leopard?

QUOTE(dvlzplayground @ May 4 2010, 10:02 PM) u shudnt ask about that here. maybe piratebay can answer ur question "OSX" is like "Windows", "Snow Leopard" (or 10.6) is the version, like "XP", "Vista" or "7". about ur friend's mac, i dun think windows is the problem. maybe cuz his OSX too unorganized dy. try Onyx or defrag it Oh... thanks for the info.. i always thought that OSX is like Vista and Snow Leopard is like Windows 7, as in Snow Leopard is the new OS. Ok, will note that down and tell my friend to give it a try. Is reformatting on MBP a hassle or easier compared to Windows?

QUOTE(viper-xs @ May 5 2010, 12:28 AM) Apps and contacts the easiest to sync. Not sure about photos and I had experienced in songs where it wiped my iphones clean. No song. End up just transfer it across from backup hard disk to my mac itunes. Should be ok for photos though if you have it all still in your iphone. It will just opened up the iPhoto automatically and ask if you want to copy it to your new mac I faced that too. My itunes was empty and there were songs in my phone. When i sync it, all gone. But then that was the only one time. Maybe some settings on itunes? QUOTE(shopaholic_1199 @ May 5 2010, 12:36 AM) hi all, i plan to buy a mbp now so is it all apple stores sell it at same price if i pay it by cash? i heard one of my fren said epicenter in pavilion offers a better price if u pay it by cash but my other frens said it's kinda impossible. They'll probably throw in a few gifts.

eh. Guys. How come mine shipped from china wan? Some get it from Singapore right?what's the difference actually. Any idea how long more it will take to arrive? By the way. Thanks for the feedback on the screen. I guess I'll have to stick with the matte screen since my order has already been processed. Just in case I really hate the matte one, is it possible for me to return and change to the glossy one?

Guys, posting this from my new MBP.. Took me the whole afternoon to get use to this new OS. But once i get the hang of it it works really fine.. Yeah, by the way, i'm using the antiglare option and it still looks great. The colors are much nicer compared to my old xps m1530. Just wanna enquire, is it good to get a time capsule or should i just use a normal external hard disk?

I think it's the connection problem. I switched of the airport connection and then turned it on again and now it's working.. One bad thing about mac. I've been running the software update since last night and it's taking forever.. How come it's so slow? When i download with uTorrent i can achieve speeds of over 100k per sec but somehow the speed of the software updater is like damn slow.

currently my update will be done in 1849 hours.. hahaha.. at first it was 20+ hours.. it just went up. Should I just leave it and it might increase its speed later or should i just abort it and try again? Phew, setting this thing up takes forever..
