QUOTE(RookieDaddy @ May 3 2010, 10:15 AM) guys, a couple of links for your reading... Hey thanks for posting this, good reading indeed and looks like we have all the best lubes (Nyogel, Krytox, DeoxIT Gold)1. Comprehensive Grease and Lube Thread (link to page 16). Do take note about the advise to protect yourself when servicing your flashlight and to thoroughly clean your hands when done. 2. 玉树归来,浅谈地震PSK应急物资. This thread is from China's biggest flashlight enthusiast site. Try using Google to translate post #3, which relate author's experience to flashlight used at ground zero(?). The Yushu's earthquake experience is very good indeed, had to read couple of times to understand the translation. The participation and response from the government also played a critical role in providing food and water in a short time. Lots of good info and experiences in there (well except the casualties part and amount of lost, sigh QUOTE(old newspaper @ May 3 2010, 11:15 AM) Malkoff MD2 with M61 to arrive... QUOTE(polkiuj @ May 3 2010, 10:41 AM) 1. Agreed. haha... let me try a summary:2. Very funny read. "But through this thing, I'd really long lesson, which many people said flashlight forum Shenhuo toys, because you could not bear to use, so just play with, are homemade daily, but really to a dangerous moment Perhaps some people will understand, is that cheap China-made toys, because usually use small tube to play with friends, the longest 10 minutes but the light it really lit 6,7 hours later, you bad out, huh, huh, in fact, ironically, usually the things that the toy is the practical things, ordinary things that a work is the key when it is found in a toy." Haha! Glad that it's true. "I am the knife of Friends, so the body was prepared F1, buck 110, and a domestic well-known imitate, but to hit the real situation faced by many knife, it may be normal can imagine, for example, cutting the rope, a large tent when the wind needs to fixed with a knife, tent, including digging, smashing, prying, etc., in fact, the face of natural disaster, a small utility knife is very small, really need is a large industrial machine, I can explain is that, three knives, homemade imitate broken; buck 110 tip fracture; FK in F1 is very strong, but it also became jagged, and was leaving when the two can with a knife (F1 and 110) remain in the area, hope to continue to play heat it." Oops. =D Harries (the author) brought a few flashlights when travelling to YuShu earthquake location: Surefire E2DL、SolarForce L2+R2M、cloned SureFire M3T+Phillips 7388、Jetbeam C-LE AA。CR123A x 10,Sanyo 18650 x 10. During his few days there, he found out that the SureFire are more reliable than any of his China-made flashlights. So he concluded that what others referred to as "expensive toys" >> SureFire, is actually very practical and more reliable when you need something to just work. His "unlucky" experience with SolarForce and JetBeam has also alerted other posters that in time of emergency, no one is gonna care to "switch to a lower level" and would just let the light burn thru sets of batteries continuously, and this lies the true test of durability and reliability... There are some good facts and findings in the article besides flashlights, it's really a very good read. |

QUOTE(pseudoblue @ May 3 2010, 12:59 PM) Haha, and then in his last post concluded in his "direction to change his PSK" to have 40 CR123A batteries There are some specific 'reasons' for this decision. One of them is the availability of AA batteries in time of emergencies. Other reasons will let you know in private. This post has been edited by RookieDaddy: May 3 2010, 01:20 PM |

QUOTE(MetalZone @ May 3 2010, 01:20 PM) ...how exactly did the other two lights fail? He only brought one REAL surefire right? Ah, he said he brought four flashlights:1) Surefire E2DL - which was very good, from beginning to end (which means the duration he was there to assist in the aftermath). But I'm not sure what he meant the SF E2DL always down. Maybe he meant the runtime on high. 2) Surefire M3T with Philips 7388 Xenon bulb - which he said "good stuff!" and was satisfied with it. 3) Solarforce L2 with R2M drop-in - Which said was working well in Beijing (probably where he's from) but at the site, it had contact issues the next day and the following day it retired. He mentioned about the light felt hot and suddenly broke down. Changing batteries did not work. 4) Jetbeam C-LE - He mentioned both L2 and C-LE felt hot and later mentioned the C-LE had burnt out. Replacing batteries also did not work. My guess is that both L2 and C-LE was overdriven for turbo/max, without proper external cooling it kaput? QUOTE(pseudoblue @ May 3 2010, 02:16 PM) Ah, he said he brought four flashlights: And he was saying most ppl buying Surefire and not using it because its expensive, so they treat it as toy (lightly use and keep), and they will buy China made flashlight to use as light (EDC). But in real life, China Made is toy, the real flashlight is the Surefire (sure will attract flame).1) Surefire E2DL - which was very good, from beginning to end (which means the duration he was there to assist in the aftermath). But I'm not sure what he meant the SF E2DL always down. Basically he said it may be the Jetbeam and Solarforce ( And it was saying White LED is not very good use in aftermath rescue, the incans WW is perfect for the purpose. I did read that surefire and Novatac has thermal sensor inside to protect the LED , to prevent over heating. This is good feature for China Made flashlight to adopt. Me for one will sacrifice less lumens for longer runtime and reliability. Afterall 300 lumens and 200 is not much different to my eyes (poor eye sight?). |

Not many of us have the opportunity to be in "that" situation where your live depend on your equipments. If so, than the best should be with you. But for everyday live, something that good than ordinary or better than good are good enough for me.
p/s: unless i have some "extra" than i'll go for the best. This always happened to me; when I got less money, I think a lot, but when I got lot of money, I think less |

I thought the Surefire M3T was a clone according to rookiedddy?
I concur that cool white LED's are lacking in the great outdoors. Screw the higher efficiency. Lately everything I purchase has to be neutral/warm white or incan. QUOTE(MetalZone @ May 3 2010, 04:00 PM) I thought the Surefire M3T was a clone according to rookiedddy? Cool LEDs have their place. If is extremely useful for blinding people. Incans are too slow and neutral is more pleasing to the eye.I concur that cool white LED's are lacking in the great outdoors. Screw the higher efficiency. Lately everything I purchase has to be neutral/warm white or incan. This is so true!!! haha He should have got an Eagletac T10LC2. That I'm pretty sure can take the heat. I'd stick to modestly driven, long runtime lights with a max of 2 modes for mission critical stuff. My (previous) Inova T1 was perfect for the situation. All the heavily driven LEDs are just for kicks. |
