For PSU, pls get those high efficiency 80PLUS with Active PFC rating with bigger silent fan (140mm)

I'm a fan of Xigmatek powersupply for their "green/environmental friendly" for both the recycle paper packaging and high energy efficiency..

400W or 500W will depend on yr HTPC requirements as power supply unit will last the longest compared to cpu/memory/mobo/hdd/lcd..

Some comments...

Pls be aware the i3 is a "fake" dual core ( it is only 2 thread instead of 2 CPU core, ) the i5 is a real dual core cpu like the Core 2 Duo.

If you plan for 2 x 1GB memory, might as well go for 1 x 2GB and later upgrade another 2Gb to make it 4GB.

What about a "decent" graphic processor like nVidia or ATI for HD video decoding ?

What cock you tock? i3 IS dual core. Don't simply spread lies.

i5 on the other hand has 2 cores/4 threads model and 4 cores model. And hypertreading is not 'fake cores'. This term is usually used by jealous AMD fanboys. HT or not, the performance is on par or better than equivalent AMD cpu's.

And oh yeah, new AMD Bulldozer also taking same route with Hyperthreading aka 'fake cores' as you call it. tongue.gif

Installed last night, tried their audio and video plugins, haven't done much other then letting them scrapping through my video files. But it gave me a solid blue screen crash on my win7 64bit when I did something...

This latest is the stable version after about a year in production. They are able to play all my mkv files so far, but still I need time to play with it. No doubt there will be bugs, but they will come out with nightly built soon as well.

Audio and video addon can be added very easily in this version.

ps: the shoutcast audio plugin was broken at the last minute the day before they release the stable version.. due to the shoutcast provider changing their mind about releasing the support it seems.

Guys, do you think it's worth it to wait until I3 Sandy Bridge is released before buying a new HTPC now?

Is Asus GTS 250 good for a htpc? Got it after sending my old 8800GT for warranty. Or the onboard graphic will be better?

if i were you, i'd get a cheap used mainboard with CPU. and power supply. things that nobody wants, an older generation architecture. and slap in an ATi HD5450. and waste all the rest of the budget on storage and HT and display.

i bought my Core 2 + mainboard for RM325, Silverstone ST56 (considered as mid high if not high end) for RM150 and ATI HD5450 for RM165.

I'm lazy to search in garage sale, prefer to just get them from LYP. sweat.gif Thought of utilizing the GTS250 for HTPC since it's lying around doing nothing. I've upgraded to GTX460 for my desktop.

then by all means do it. just utilize anything that you have unused. get a dual core CPU from either intel or amd and it'll be powerful enough to decode just about any HD movies. that is if you can't get hardware acceleration to perform correctly.

Thanks for sharing. It must be the software, as my HTPC is a barebone unit. Only the soundcard is the add-on.

After tried to play around with XBMC, I think it's much faster than WMC7 and it is also able to at least play 24/96 FLAC but somehow seek/pause is still not working...
