AVR show DTS MA and TruHD?
or just DTS/ DObly Digital?
Its showing DTS and Dolby Digital, not DTS MA or DD TrueHD.... checking on the PS3 display during movie playback also shows DTS and Dolby Digital only....

The settings on BD Video and BD Audio are set to BITSTREAM (Direct) and BITSTREAM.... so unclear why its showing DTS and DD on the AVR... hmm.gif

And i do have a DTS MA and DD TrueHD enabled AVR..... blush.gif

I suppose so, mayb only the slim can decode DTS MA and TrueHD....

And yup, i am also under the impression that toslink cant carry DTS MA and TrueHD, thats y am using HDMI for PS3, WDTV and Xbox360.... but mayb i am outdated with my info... blush.gif

But still nice to have bitstream as an option rather than PCM as i find PS3's decoding is a little too agressive.... switch between PCM and Bitstream in the same scene and you will notice the diff....

Nice move by Sony.... just when Sony removed the "Other OS" option in PS3.... next up... 3D gaming and thereafter, 3D BD playback...

Optical can pass HD audio. Just not 7.1, Optical cable maxes out at 5.1. HDMI is the only way to transfer 7.1 HD audio. But if you only have a 5.1 setup, an Optical cable will be able to carry all audio signals you equipment is capable of handling. Now obviously, HDMI is the best for both audio and video, but Optical will be fine for your acceptable sound blast.

skywire - although it may seem like it of late, i'm really not trying to pick on you every time. honestly. but i don't think you're really helping this forum by passing on misinformation to those who are less in the know. this is doing a real dis-service to this forum as well as its members. i'd suggest you refrain from passing on your half-baked info unless you are certain of the facts. as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

kindly refer to brother aiman's post above. this is the "reference point" we use around here. optical cables do not have the necessary bandwidth to carry HD audio signals (i.e. DTS-HD MA and Dolby THD).

@ aiman - thanks. i was hoping you'd pull out your famous diagram again. lol.

hopefully it is region free
technically, it's not region free (i.e not region ABC). It is however region AB, so will work fine on your region A machine.

For those who are new into HD, neither coaxial nor optical is able to send HD signal for avr to decode. You NEED HDMI cable in order to get HD audio.
