Alright, this is for those who has queries on any laptop cooling related questions.

For starters, I'd insist anyone using a notebook/netbook to use a cooler, as most pf them get hot over an extended period of time. But what cooler are you gonna buy? Cheap china tri-fan-blue-LED ones? Or a decent CoolerMaster? Well, like I said, depends on scenario.

So, if you're budget is ->

RM0-10
Here, you can, DIY your own cooler, or use those Made-In-China ones. My bet goes for the DIY option, as there are many ways you can cool and customize your cooler. Brands from this range is only those China ones. Other than buying cheap coolers, you may want to start from buying a can of compressed air (available at most established computer stores). This is a cheap and effective option.

Should you need any help in terms of DIY, here's the place to go.

RM10-RM50
From here, you can opt for imitation Cooler Master coolers. Whether they work as well as the real thing, that I cannot guarantee. There are many types of imitations, from the Cooler Master Notepal X1 to the X2. lol. But honestly, to me, I think they're all from the same OEM manufacturer. So it also depends on you. For this range, you can also choose the DIY route, as you have more cash to customize your cooler. brows.gif For here, you may be able to get a Cooler Master (Second hand, maybe), but mostly would be Evercool etc.

RM60-RM100
From this range, you can get yourself a decent Cooler Master cooler. If you're within the distance to Low Yat Plaza, do check out Viewnet, as the Infinite's price is currently at RM89. drool.gif

RM110-RM300
This is where the fun begins. You can get those Zalman coolers from this range. The idea is, the more you pay, the better the cooler? Well, I still need some user feedbacks regarding this issue. You may also find Logitech and Belkin coolers in this price range.

Here's a list of threads selling laptop coolers. * Active as of 2/1/2010 *
- Zalman Notebook Coolers by kin kin
- Cooler Master Notebook Coolers by bruceleestore
- YuLong Notebook Coolers by ngbh

* I cannot guarantee on stock availability. *

Others
- You may also want to consider undervolting your laptop. Do visit the thread for more details.

- You can also remove your back panel. It may void your warranty, so be careful. This is also a widely used method.
- Here's Najmods' method of cooling his Asus K40AB

- If you have a Notepal V1, like me, you may want to do this custom to "enable" more air going through.

- If you are brave enough, I'd also suggest you to replace the thermal compound of your laptop.

- If you already have, let's say, a CM Infinite, and you're still getting higher temperatures, you may want to clear your laptop's heatsink, as it is a good trap for dust, especially if you remove your back panel.

FAQs

What if the cooler's fan(s) doesn't align to my laptop's fan?
Better to get a cooler with a center fan(s), so the air will be spread evenly.

Does the cooler's material matter?
Generally speaking, yes. Aluminum coolers absorb the heat away from the laptop

What about fan speed?
Fan speed depends. Although it is better to get higher RPMs, but that would be higher noise as well. But if you can live with the noise, its not a problem.

Long Feedback

QUOTE(highwind85 @ Feb 3 2010, 04:44 PM)
I'll give my feedback on Zalman NC1000 + 15.6 inch BenQ S57...
Initial test on idle temperature showed that the cooler manage to cool the cpu for about 8-10degC and 5-8degC for gpu in normal non aircond environment....I'll do some more test on full load and will update again...

some feedback on 2-fan cap ayam cooler (cheapest cooler @ rm8.8)...Didn't do much to help reduce the temperature..After 1 month of usage, the fan started to make noise...

Sometimes, it's the laptop designers' fault for it overheating.

1C was deducted from Processor and GPU temperatures because of the increased processor usage when using screen-snap programme(Sniping Tool)
p/s : These temperatures are still higher than what i normally have because i haven't run this machine for a longer period. The lowest average temperatures i got before were CPU=28C,GPU=41C,HDD=30C

My honest opinion:
The Zalman NC2000 works best when paired up with an air conditioner.Looking at the temperatures, it doesn't fare too badly when used in a non-air conditioned room. The high quality materials used in the production of the NC2000 pretty much helps a lot in heat dissipation and aiding air-flow.And yes it's pretty cold due to its full aluminium body drool.gif Definitely worth the RM229 i paid biggrin.gif or could i find any better ones? brows.gif

Another note:Will update temperatures of full CPU and GPU load

I last saw at All IT hypermart@ low yat...rm149 or rm159...around the price of Zalman NC1000...The performance should be similar to NC1000 as they are using the same fan and similar design...it should fit 15.6 and 16 inch...not very sure about 17 inch...It is to fit in the gap between NC1000 and NC1500

This actually from something I read elsewhere, when buying a cooler, it is better to get one that is one size bigger. For example 15" is supported on NC1000 however you are better off with the NC2000 as the NC1000 'true wind-flow area' will not be able to cover the whole body of the laptop.

If you checked, for most coolers the mesh is about 1-2cm from the edge of the cooler and that means only the inner part is covered. It is okay if the laptop is smaller than the cooler itself however in the case of 15" on NC1000, it either will fit just right or go off the edge making less area covered by the wind-flow, which in return, less cooling efficiency. On the NC2000 however, it fits nicely in mesh area.

Thanks so much for your pics. Now, I have a better vision on how it will looks like if I put a 14'' laptop on it. Anyway, do you think 14'' laptop fit this cooler? hmm.gif

Besides that, why do you "cello tape" your speakers?

Looking at the dimensions......the ZM-NC2000 is still wider than my laptop by about 1 cm at both sides..Will definitely fit a 14" smile.gif

Errr...about the cellophane tape... laugh.gif There are dust getting stucked in the "holes"...once it's stuck, cannot get it out anymore.....2 spots of dust already entered and i can't get them out anymore sad.gif So if you're not using external speakers, just cover the hole-in my case i just cello tape it tongue.gif

So you think ZM-NC2000 is not too big for 14'' laptop? As for the speakers, I do agree with you. I have seen before my friend's compaq laptop also have the same "dusty" speakers problem and can't get it out anymore even he used the "gel" cleaner (green colour one) ...

It's ideal to have a cooler larger than your laptop, but it still can functions effectively even if the zalman cooler is smaller than your lappy if you really lack budget...
I'm using Zalman NC-1000 on my Benq S57 (15.6 inch)

yup...gaming... tongue.gif ..to see how high the temperature can go and how much temperature zalman can decrease at full load..
Snap shot taken after the gaming session...it would be more effective if it's in aircond room...

I plan to buy a COOLER MASTER NOTEPAL INFINITE POWERFUL NOTEBOOK COOLER w/ 4 USB Hub. But my laptop doesn't have any USB port on the right side. Does the Notebook cooler draws power only from the mini USB port at rear right?

Just get another cable, those cable that used for 2.5'' hdd external with 2 head, has enough length for usb port on left side or right side. Even for 14'' front side usb port, still enough.

Just buy a USB HUB..
No need a long one..
As long as it can reach another side of your lappy to use 'COOLER MASTER NOTEPAL INFINITE POWERFUL NOTEBOOK COOLER'..
It's worthy..

Do you mean I can use any mini USB cable to connect the mini USB port at the right side of the notebook cooler to my Laptop's USB port at the left? If so, the cable should be quite long. Can you show me a picture of the cable?

According to Cooler Master's Product Sheet, the provided cable length is 500mm. I think it is long enough to reach my USB port on the left side. Will confirm once I got hold of the product. Thanks Lee!

After undervolting

May get better results with a better cooler.

Supposed to be 1 year....
Though I didn't have any problem with it these 2 years except dust cleaning...

How do you clean the dust inside the notebook cooler? Is there a guide?

The Cooler Master NotePal U2 I'm using is claim to be able to use even for 17' laptops.
So far no problems using it on my 15.6' laptop... I like the adjustable fans which can be placed directly beneath the heat sinks for better cooling, summore easy to clean ^____^
Its RM 68 though, lower than your desired budget hehe~
There are other nice coolers from CM and Zalman but I'm not sure they are easy to clean or not.

hmm.gif Mine is a video from YouTube and not an image. Thus, you can put it on the 1st page directly. No problem. You just have to right click the YouTube video and copy the embed html and create one on the 1st page by pasting it and post as video in YouTube format. smile.gif Anyway, hope you guys like it!

Yea. IMHO if one wants to buy a USB powered notebook cooler, this is not really an ideal choice. However, if one wants performance wise and not really care about this matter, then this should be fit your requirements! Neverheless, the vid. below shows one of the owner who just powered his/ her notebook by just using USB port. rclxub.gif

As you can see from the bottom of Alienware M17x, the exhaust vent is located at the rear of the laptop and the cooling fan of the NZXT Cryo LX is located at the rear too. Thus, this notebook cooler suites Alienware M17x the most. As for Zalman NC2000, the efficiency may not as good as NZXT Cryo LX as its cooling fan is located at the front of the notebook cooler. smile.gif

Yea, I think it's gonna be a little bit troublesome if one want to buy it via eBay. The product is located at US? If it does, then you have to consider the customs and import duty involved inside.

If I'm not mistaken, this type of notebook cooler will draw(suck) out the heat that is dissipated from the laptop exhaust vent. But bear in mind that the clip is fit to your laptop exhaust vent! biggrin.gif Click this.

Actually, do you need a mobile notebook cooler? If not, you can choose the conventional notebook cooler as they function as good as this too. The only draw back is lacking of mobility. Other than that, I can't see any major difference between these two types of notebook cooler. laugh.gif Maybe you can consider CM NotePal Color Infinite and etc. They all are good in cooling down a laptop. nod.gif

Actually, I'm not really know in precise the current price for these notebook coolers at Malaysia as I'm at Germany now. However, you can refer to the garages sale or Low Yatt. For instance, bruceleestore at garages sale:

(i) CM NotePal U2 = RM78.-
(ii) ZM-NC1000 = RM153.-
(iii) ZM-NC1500 = RM155.-

I only know the current price for NotePal U2.
There are 2 variants, 1 is for 10.1-12" laptops (~RM50), whereas the other one is for 14" - 17" laptops (~RM68).

Hihi dear Sifus,

I was just wondering, usually how do you all measure the effectiveness of the Cooler pad? Just use a temperature measuring program and screenshot (gaming and non-gaming)?
Planning to test the Cooler Master Notepal U2 on my F60 hehe laugh.gif By the way, I'm using SpeedFan

biggrin.gif I do trust the temperatures showed in the software. As for ACPI, it stands for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface which is a power management specification developed by Intel, Microsoft, and Toshiba. Some says that ACPI temp. is temperature of power supply. Besides that, ACPI temp also known as the onboard temp sensors on your motherboard. Maybe some sifus here can help us out. laugh.gif

hey, i hv try the software that u hv posted on the topic there. When i wan to test it, do i need to close all the program? Need how long to test the temperature?

From wat i hv observed, the different of the temperature and before is not much different. May be 5-10 Celcius only. But when i touch the laptop part that normally will be quite hot when i not using cooling pad there and it is a lot different compare between using and without using cooling pad. is it show the cooling pad perform well??

sry that my english is a bit poor. hope that u guys understand my english.

i think the notepal W1 hv bigger size than the notepal 1. Notepal 1 also hv the higher fan speed which is better.
notepal 1 also hv higher fan airflow ( i not sure is better or not, someone pls let us know).
the notepal W1 is suitable for 15' and 17' while the notepal 1 is suitable for 15' and below. depend on ur notebook inch.
hope can help, and correct me if im wrong. biggrin.gif

Nevertheless, the design for the vent hole is a bit different compared to the ZM NC2000. It has more "air" holes and thus IMHO will increase the cooling efficiencies. rclxms.gif

Same here. The partially vent in ZM NC2000 is a problem which Zalman has to improve and they have done it at this new series of notebook coolers. Great job by them! Besides that, I'm kinda like the elevated angle of the NC3000 which I think is a plus for viewing angle and cooling purpose. Oh yea, did you noticed that the NC3000 is bigger in length compared to NC2000. sad.gif

why is it so hot even though the cpu usage is below 50?

Yeap, the temperature is on the high side.
My previous T9400 had 50-60c of temperature.
You many need to clean the heatsink & fan.

I never heard xpad before but I do recommend you another notebook cooler, that is, cooler master NotePal U2. There are 2 adjustable fans come along with the notebook cooler. If you do not wish to use it, just "unclip" it from the notebook cooler. For more info, please refer to here.

There's no solid evidence that leaving the USB port on long term will damage it.

After all, it's meant to be USED, not left idle.

after much consideration, i figured that it doesn't really matter whether it's usb powered or not. as long as it does a good job as a cooler, it's a good cooler. looked at my shop's cooler master notepal d1 just now, the design is solid, liked it.

as for zalman 2500 and cm infinite is it difficult to clean the fans?

I do agree with you this time. Notebook cooler must perform COOLING effect as it should be. For Zalman NC2500, I wonder if it is released into our market already? I have no idea about it. As for CM Infinite's exhaust fan cleaning procedures, please refer to the first page.

notebook cooler is just a marketting crap ....

the laptop/notebook works fine even without the notebook cooler or whatever it's called ...

in fact, the notebook cooler does not benefit the laptop/notebook at all

if you want some elvelation for better typing it's best you get a children's table, their height is good ...

believe me, no matter how fancy is the notebook cooler is, whether they are made from steel, aluminium or even gold ..... the back of our laptop is PLASTIC .. and the heat transfer rate is insane! you can burn the plastic from 1 end to another and you cannot even feel the heat ...

if you really want to make your laptop cooler, send your laptop to the technician and replace the cooling fan with a higher power, change the thermal paste .. only by tweaking internally, that things can improve ...

if you want to cool through the plastic, that's a waste of time
*
so, is it true? some say it works some don't. i think the guy replying don't know what is physics.
the cooler i heard the most is zalman, cm and table fan, lol.

Some of the measurements suggested from the quote above are the truth but I'm not really agree with the part of saying the notebook cooler is useless as it does help in reducing the temperature. Nevertheless, it all depends on you. Maybe you can buy a stand fan with higher rpm and put it besides your notebook. biggrin.gif

Anyway I saw outside there are many like erm can I mean it as fake product???
The model build looks like zalman nc-2000 or others that are famous and expensive.
But I look at the price only RM28???
Wonder is it worth to buy those then a real Zalman nc-2000 for 200 above.

hmm.. i am not sure.. mine infinite didn't show any significant cooling effect
well except that when on big load, it prevent the bottom from heating up and provide good air to it.
the nice thing about infinite is that it has nice design and also big.
very convenient for you to surf on bed without need to worry that your laptop gonna cook your bed smile.gif
hmm.. i also want to know if anyone here experience good cooling effect from infinite, please do share ya.
imo, the classic cooling pad is better after all (with no whatever air flow design, only straight forward air flow)
correct me if I'm wrong.

time will tell smile.gif
btw you can lift a bit your lappy from the table surface for some ventilation
remember, the area that you should focus to blow with your fan is the underneath part

+1
just make sure that the air ventilation not stuck by dust or anything.
and you can choose to buy some cooler pad.
no need expensive one. Rm 20-30 should be ok
just to make sure the air is flowing.

if you can manage good air flow and not over heating then it should be able to last longer

Just receive my TX-2 today. Would like to ask , what does it means by Surface Spread ( in Artic Silver 5 instruction ) for Core 2 Duo ? Does that means that after applying a dot in the middle of the processor then use a credit card to spread it evenly ?

I don't use cooler pad, a aluminimu rounded stick just put below to jack up my lappy and create a space to allow air flow from within. Save energy, environmental friendly and .. ow cost solution especially lappy have limited USB port.

Getting my ASUS - U33JC-RX067 within this week. What sort of cooling system should i go for? Is Zalman Nc2500 advisable or just cooler master will do? I don't play games that much but I love to download stuffs. Sometimes I on my notebook for 4 days straight.

i dont think u need cooler unless ur notebook has problem with its air ventilation but still, download files doesnt generate much heat

Then i wait for it. Price estimation heard RM150 to RM220. Hope they can release it soon rclxms.gif

But it's advisable for 17" notebook. So if i place my notebook here, will be a bit bulky lol. But I personally think the bigger the cooler, the better right? hmm.gif

Hi - plz recommend me some of the best laptop cooler for my ASUS A42JV 14" based on the
several different requirement below:-

1) Good to surf the net on the bed & on your lap.
2) Good for portability (frequent traveller)
3) Best of everything (portability not an issue, etc)

LOL, you're being a bit rude man...
I am totally new with coolers and I have no idea rm50-60 is a small amount to buy a cooler and as I read the first page of this topic, this amount can get me a medium-end cooler dy... And there're coolers for rm10 anyways...

A42Jv is not a really high end / expensive laptop also so I thought my budget would be more than enough for a good cooler...
So pardon my noobness in this area and brief me how much more can a Zalman perform compared to a cooler master? That was the feedback I wanted from the 1st place

And my previous post was implying any SUITABLE coolers for my laptop model, meaning I am looking for one which suits the size most and can cool this model most effectively..

Depends on the intake vents of ur A42Jv.. and the temperature of ur room.. im currently using the freebie 3 fan cooler pad lol waiting for my CM Notepal AX back from RMA.. not much difference.. i only get a much cooler HDD thats all..

It's the airflow that matters imo..

Hmm HDD I am not so worried...
Like just now I was just playing SC2 for 10 minutes only then my processor and motherboard spiked up to 88C and graphic card around 80C, I am in an aircondition room somemore lol..
Can a good cooler bring it down to 70+?

I apologies about my yesterdays comment. Was a bit upset with my boss. Yup, nothing to do wit you but what to do a bit emotional here. Suppose to get 5 months bonuses but reduce to 4 months now just because he getting a new car (demmm it). Anyhow, getting my U33JC today with max extended warranty at Evernew lowyat. Is either pay RM360 to Asus (1 extended global warranty) or Evernew (2 years local warranty for RM192). If u know inside people 2 years can be FOC. For me I will be getting Zalman because of good review from others. Btw (Off topic) what external hdd (1TB or 2TB) brand should I go for? I have tones of Bluray files wanna transfer in. Anyone here selling Bluray files LOL tongue.gif (Joking)

my tip..

try putting 4 matchboxes on each edge(of course do not put the matches, replace it something else). pretty much it improves ventilation and can reduce temperature by 4-5 degrees

+1, this should be done whenever one is using a laptop without a cooler, and especially when one is not in an air-conditioned room nod.gif
I'm not sure whether it decreases temperatures up to 4-5 degrees but it sure improves ventilation notworthy.gif

So, what are the factors that determines the suitability of a cooling pad to a laptop? From what I have read from the first post, it should be budget, cooler fan position, cooling material and fan speed. Correct me if I am wrong, I believe that the screen size of the laptop and the laptop weight are also very important, right? What are other factors?

Thank you for the advice given.

Yeah, the size is important... as for the weight, not that much I think unless one is using an Alienware M17x drool.gif Not all cooler pads can support such a heavy weight machine nod.gif
The number/size of heat vents on the bottomside of the laptop will also undoubtedly affect the suitability of the cooler pad...

1. will the dimension of the cooler pad too big for my notebook? (Dimension W / H / D : 380x300x10~50 mm)
2. i read through this topic.. n saw one of the forumes said that it didn't show any significant cooling effect.. ?
3. or is there any suggestion for more effective cooler pad for my notebook?

Hi guys. I found this website which hopefully can help others to decide which cooler to choose from. They making a review about each cooler very well.

After i check out the site i bought the evercool hawk 1 notebook cooler. Not yet test it since my lappy not yet arrive. I will post some review / result after getting my lappy.

Here the web :

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/notepal_u3/

But keep in mind they r testing those cooler with mac book pro. Result might be slightly different for other lappy.

Hope can help a bit here.

Cheers.

I have a question... i have the compaq presario v3000 (Puke blood) you all know how hot it can get. I bought the cooler master U2 last nite.. very quiet. So far nothing i have to complain. It does the cooling duty. But i can still feel the heat when i rest my hand at the wrist area.

But when i buy last nite. I also saw they have those plug in fan.. it goes to the side of your lappie, and suck out the hot air. Is that better than a cooling pad ka? Wondering if i made the right choice of getting the cooler master =x

Hi! East Malaysian here~ =)

I'm a ACER 5745G (i7-720, GT330M) user & I was looking for a decent cooler with decent pricing.

I'm gaming a lot but the i7 overheats & instant shut off way too fast, even light games in Air-con room.

I was thinking of CM U2 & Zalman NC2000 (which r recommendable by most)

This is wat I thought of:

U2 - good for carrying around, easy to clean, adjustable cooling position, within RM100

NC2000 - better cooling(?), harder in cleaning, bag problem(?), around RM200

The idle heat of the cores are around 50C =.=lll eventhough I'm using the cheap Evercool Legend notebook cooler (sucks air from top to side)

ACER 5745G's design is made to suck air from beneath and blow from side. Plus the air holes below is insufficient for effective cooling.

Any advise? =/

Whether U2 works well or not really depends on the laptop... different laptop may have different results... But basically the more vents underneath the laptop, the better the cooling will be for U2 since you can move the fans to the hottest spots...
If unsure, Zalman cooler pads will probably cool better than CMs nod.gif

cooler master taiwan.. zalman south korea.. zalman nc2000 can adjust height and the usb wire can keep it back.
so what the price in market nc1000 & nc2000? i won't choose CM since just the brand that cause us pricey..
so i asked around know dell inspiron 15R suit which cooler? CM U2 fan is adjustable? but my bro using CM around RM 80 said not bad..

Well, I agree there's quite a few of those copy-cat versions of CM cooler pads, but you won't find the same "Cooler Master" words there laugh.gif Anyway there's also copy-cat versions of Zalmans as well laugh.gif
Zalman is much more dearer so its by nature that it should be of better quality... right? laugh.gif
Yeah, so for those who wants a long-lasting laptop, try getting laptops without dedicated GPUs hehe nod.gif

Wat PF T.J. said is right. I notice fake CMs usually have Chinese words on the boxes. Actually there r fakes everywhere, no matter wat brand anyway. Chinamen mostly choose the best brands to copy tongue.gif

Perhaps you should check whether the decreased fan speed is due to dust clogging the fan? hmm.gif
It happens from time to time since most users will only tend to clean off the dusts on the fan blades themselves and neglected the ones at the region around the blade tips...
You can try cleaning it with cotton buds nod.gif

Oh ya, hair getting stucked on the motor cylinder will also significantly decrease fan speed

Any laptop cooler recommend with effective dust filter ? biggrin.gif Budget below RM100

Anyway , does anyone know how to clean up the dust in the vent other then using compressed air ? Got any shop provide such service?

I think , if just using laptop cooler is not enough for serious laptop gamer. Most of the laptop cooler in the market , the fan suck air from bottom(which sometime will suck dust on the table/anything place that you placed the laptop cooler) , then blow up toward the laptop(most laptop bottom is fan intake system) . Which result the laptop also suck some of the dust , dust start to build up inside the laptop cooling system , the heat problem slowly increase as time pass.

The effective way for cooling that I think will work
-Dust/dirt free environment , clean up dust inside laptop every half year , apply thermal compound if possible? tongue.gif
-Use laptop cooler that have dust filter and adjustable(adjust the position that suitable for your laptop)fan to provide constant cool air for the laptop to suck biggrin.gif
-Aluminium laptop cooler surface some people say useless because it does not direct contact with the laptop rclxub.gif
-Lift up the laptop , provide more air flow(Which what I doing now) laugh.gif

Do correct me if I wrong , I new to laptop cooling sweat.gif

Hey everyone. I'm using a dell inspiron 1464. Can anyone recommend a good cooler for me? And, just wanted to ask, which type of cooler is better? The ones that suck air, or the ones that blow air? The intake vents on my laptop appear to be on the bottom though...
