planning to buy this lappy. havent arrive yet but the spec seems promising. can anyone give me suggestion whether this is a good lappy (expected to last at least 3-5years).
I`m a graphic multimedia student and play games too. Software using:adobe, macromedia, autodesk maya, 3Ds MAX, Virtools, Flash.
SO will this lappy promise me great performance.?

and any comment on the proc? i5 is awesome?

maya problem is the renderring part only. if really heavy really takes a lot of time.

If you need, or can fully utilize the computing power of an i7 Clarksdale you wouldn't even be asking the question

For your uses, it'll be better to just go with the higher clocked i5 as most games still benefit more from said high clocks than they do from extra cores or threads.

Either is good. If you have the money to spare, go for the better one, naturally. But the improvement that brings may not be as notable as you'd hope for.

Clock for clock, Arrandale seems to outperform its Penryn counterparts.

Based on preliminary reviews, the i5-540M seems to be much faster than the P8700, and both of them have the same clock speeds. But how well it holds up against the P9600 with its higher clocks and bigger cache size, I can't honestly say.

5740g seems nice.. been looking at it for awhile.. hoping that others will buy it and give us some reviews on it!!

BenQ S42 and S57 will still pawn it by alot..

According to the info I could find, the 310M seems to be a rebadge of the G 210M, which means that both the BenQ models will be far superior gaming rigs by comparison.

Use recovery partition to restore the pc to factory settings..

As far as I know, Acer doesn't generally provide recovery DVDs with their products. But other companies, such as Dell, provide DVDs for everything from the OS to drivers to the bloatware.

I guess acer saves money Anyways upon booting my system a year back it did ask me to make recovery DVD just in case the Recovery partition on the HDD goes corrupt.. Anyway.. If got problem just use the recovery settings and restore it to factory default

Formatting from the recovery partition generally restores your laptop to factory settings. I.e. It'll be brand new again, at least from the software point of view.

Perhaps that is the reason Acer sells its laptops cheaper than other competitors? Cause they do save a buck or two by not providing said recovery DVDs.

Low benching score. Wonder about its gaming performance.

I was wondering why with better processor and GPU and ram ( refering 5740), its just a bit better than studio 15 in term of benching score?

Because 3DMark is heavily GPU reliant and the HD5470 is merely a HD4570 that has undergone a die shrink and a moderate OC. RAM speed rarely makes a difference in terms of performance; Thus taking all that into account, the benchmark score does seem to concur pretty nicely. But perhaps with better drivers in the future, you can expect to see a small performance boost, gaming wise.

well, formatting the laptop is just like any usual task you do with your notebook, its just hdd read/write. its not really the only factor that will spoil the notebook.

as for the windows, as long you got the key on the sticker below the notebook, you can use other windows cd and key in it to install.

Yes. The product/activation key that comes with your notebook can be used with other Windows installations. But bear in mind that it is bound to your notebook and you wont be able to use it to install Windows on a different PC.

upgrade a notebook wont be a good idea to invest...
notebook can be upgrade, but the cost is likely to be hefty
and by cost it is not only in term of money...
to me, get a good spec notebook today can already last you a 3-4 years...
do not forget, hardware is always a few miles ahead of advancement in software.

Quite expensive to upgrade.. like the CPU and GPU.. very expensive.. LoL.. you'd better buy a new system if so..

Upgrading the RAM and HDD of most notebooks is pretty easy. Likewise the CPU and GPU, though those have more procedures and caveats you have to abide by.

But as others have noted, apart from the RAM and HDD, a mobile CPU or GPU is likely to cost you an exorbitant amount of cash that is rarely justified by the performance increase they afford.

Considering it seems to be a re-brand of the G 210M, then I'd say it is slightly weaker than the desktop HD4350

And if compare against Lenovo G450 W7HP, which one is better?
I guess it should differ in terms of proc and of course an extra $200-300 on the price tag, rite?

well, most difference would be the cpu,
as gpu wise, 310m is just rebranded from g210m, not much difference.

Hi.. i got mine 2 days ago. There are some problems i found out. While i was installing those pirated games, some hang, some just missing file. But when i install original games or what, it works. I dont know if the rest of you expirienced it. Well, since people were asking about games, i can run left for dead at 1366x768 with 4xMSAA and 2XAA and the rest are att enabled and high... i get a reading FPS of 30~40FPS. But i set high performance throught the nvidia control pannel. f i run on Quality i get 15~25FPS only. Will update later once i complete install my CODMW2

Sensitive DVD drive i pressume..mine s57's blue ray drive also like that...pirated games sometimes not ok..due to the pirated dvd's poor quality..(as they are burnt DVDs)

MayB the quality like what @highwind85 said. Well, ive tried alot of prited games and only 2 out of 10 works. But original games 10/10 works. So theres no problem with my optical dvd-rom.

Hello there,

i just bought this laptop 3 days ago. It is a good laptop. I bought it here in JB, for RM 2600. Actual selling price was Rm 2499, and with 11 free gifts; 1. Mouse, 2. USB Hub, 3. Screen Cleaner, 4. Screen Protector, 5. Keyboard skin, 6. Laptop Lock, 7. Network cable, 8. Laptop Skin, 9. Headphones 10. Cooler Pad and 11. 4 GB Usb pendrive. Since i dont need any of these items, the price was reduced by RM 60, to RM 2439. I added another 2GB DDR 3 for RM 165, making it RM 2604. I paid RM 2600.

Over all, the laptop is fast. It came with original Windows and many programs and games (trial version installed). Full version of Microsoft Works is also installed and 60 Days McAfee protection. There are no bloatware running by default upon restart. The Windows 7 login screen is also customized to display Acer. That's a nice touch. Compared to previous Gemstone series, this one does not have an HD webcam, only VGA webcam. It comes with a fingerprint reader though.

After using it for a day, the letter 'J' key on the keyboard came off. Putting it back, it comes off over again and again. If you take notice, this laptop has a chiclet floating kinda keyboard. Looks a little weak. I went to Acer Highpoint service center (as the shop where i bought the laptop said it would take them 3-5 days for them to send and get it repaired), and they fixed it in under 30 minutes by replacing the key itself. From then, it is OK so far.

I have not tried playing any games, and will try soon. I have a question to other 4740G users out there. Since this laptop comes with Nvidia 310M and the Intel 430M Core i5 has an on-die Intel Graphics, how is it possible to switch from Nvidia to Intel Graphics for maximum battery life? I couldnt find any option to that, and i couldnt find any Intel Graphics Driver installed as well, which suggests that the Intel graphics is never used!

In my opinion, this laptop is fast, for the amount of money paid! It is a dual core with Hyper-Threading and should give a boost to multitasking, such as playing video and surfing, programming etc. The build quality is very good, the lid is beautiful, except for the keyboard - which looks weak. This laptop does not come with USB 3, Blu-ray Drive, LightScribe capability of HD webcam, but i think it is sufficient for most people.

This laptop is greyish inside, and looks good with a Logitech wireless mouse (grey color) as it matches very well.

Personally I've encountered many cases similiar to what you are experiencing from various brands and models of laptop, it has nothing to do with the keyboard's design.

Since all of you are intrested in the gaming field of this laptop performance. Let me give u a personal glimpse of what im playing with Ultra high on trees, physx and grass. The rest are on High. Heres a glimpse of Avatar the game with FRAPS on to check the benchmark. Check it out.
FYI this laptop model dosent come with a blue-ray ROM. If it did, i dont think the price will be at RM2499. Thats too good to be true. And also no lightscribe. Its just a DVD-Super Multi DL drive.

chweitan : wherever u go, remember dont go 2 viewnet in low yat at 3rd floor. the price i got ther is much higher den other shops. i bought it 2 early, din knw d market price, so the took advantage on me.

HeLLonEarTH, u should have upgraded RAM to 4GB straight away when buying. Its only bout Rm150+, worth the price to do so. For lack of USB ports, a ten buck USB hub could solve it. But the problem is it should come with USB 3.0 as WD has already launch their new gen equipments on USB3.0. I am worried if buy now, then get outdated tomorrow. Hais...

i bought it today.rm2480 with free gift.i went to ask at pc zone they give me the price rm2440 without free gift but when i decided to take it they only tell me out of stock.so i bought at 3rd floor opposite the viewnet stall!! so far so good.btw i dunnu how to set up wireless router,anybody can teach me?
