i just bought this laptop 3 days ago. It is a good laptop. I bought it here in JB, for RM 2600. Actual selling price was Rm 2499, and with 11 free gifts; 1. Mouse, 2. USB Hub, 3. Screen Cleaner, 4. Screen Protector, 5. Keyboard skin, 6. Laptop Lock, 7. Network cable, 8. Laptop Skin, 9. Headphones 10. Cooler Pad and 11. 4 GB Usb pendrive. Since i dont need any of these items, the price was reduced by RM 60, to RM 2439. I added another 2GB DDR 3 for RM 165, making it RM 2604. I paid RM 2600.

Over all, the laptop is fast. It came with original Windows and many programs and games (trial version installed). Full version of Microsoft Works is also installed and 60 Days McAfee protection. There are no bloatware running by default upon restart. The Windows 7 login screen is also customized to display Acer. That's a nice touch. Compared to previous Gemstone series, this one does not have an HD webcam, only VGA webcam. It comes with a fingerprint reader though.

After using it for a day, the letter 'J' key on the keyboard came off. Putting it back, it comes off over again and again. If you take notice, this laptop has a chiclet floating kinda keyboard. Looks a little weak. I went to Acer Highpoint service center (as the shop where i bought the laptop said it would take them 3-5 days for them to send and get it repaired), and they fixed it in under 30 minutes by replacing the key itself. From then, it is OK so far.

I have not tried playing any games, and will try soon. I have a question to other 4740G users out there. Since this laptop comes with Nvidia 310M and the Intel 430M Core i5 has an on-die Intel Graphics, how is it possible to switch from Nvidia to Intel Graphics for maximum battery life? I couldnt find any option to that, and i couldnt find any Intel Graphics Driver installed as well, which suggests that the Intel graphics is never used!

In my opinion, this laptop is fast, for the amount of money paid! It is a dual core with Hyper-Threading and should give a boost to multitasking, such as playing video and surfing, programming etc. The build quality is very good, the lid is beautiful, except for the keyboard - which looks weak. This laptop does not come with USB 3, Blu-ray Drive, LightScribe capability of HD webcam, but i think it is sufficient for most people.

This laptop is greyish inside, and looks good with a Logitech wireless mouse (grey color) as it matches very well.

that guy told me the i5 proc fsb got problem and just 133mhz not 1066, and he show me 1 model with xp os cannot start up, he advice me not to buy this, if not I sure regret. I just weird why intel promote I series proc so much and he say not good?

Hi everyone. In my previous review, i said this laptop does NOT come with Bluray, LightScribe, HD Webcam and USB 3. Also, i just found out, this laptop also does NOT come with S-Video output and Firewire port (IEEE 1394). However, just like I said previously, not many people use these features anyway.

For those asking about PhysX, NVidia 310M supports PhysX  but in default install, it is disabled. You can enable it in Nvidia Control Panel. Also, there are no official Notebook drivers for Nvidia 300M series on Nvidia's site as of yet. You may try Nvidia 200M Series drivers, but i have not.

For installing Windows XP, Acer do not provide WIndows XP drivers. Although the model description is not available on Acer.com.my, if you go under Supports and Downloads, this model is available, but no Windows XP Drivers. However, since this laptop uses common hardware such as Realtek Audio, Nvidia GPU, etc, i believe you can find WIndows XP drivers for it, either directly from the component manufacturers' website or download it from Acer from a laptop which uses the same hardware (4736  maybe).

I need to use Windows XP, so i will TRY to install it soon. (For those who wants to this, please make recovery DVD first). Anyway, anyone has experience with Windows XP on it, please share. (less trouble for me figuring it out!). Also regarding the salesman saying you cant install Windows XP, i think it is not true. Maybe the salesman is using a WinXP CD with no SATA AHCI drivers on it. Since SATA AHCI was not available when WinXP was released, you cannot use the CD, except by having a floppy with the drivers (Intel AHCI Drivers - www.intel.com) or slipstreaming the drivers on to the CD using nLite etc.

I think Core i5 is a really good product, and its hard to believe that people are saying it is unstable and got problems etc.

that guy just show the model in front of me keep restarting and cannot boot win xp, and I ask him to try win 7 for me because I got sikit no believe what he said, and he tell me to wait 30 minutes he will show me, of course I no wait him lar. He keep saying the i5 fsb got problem so cause the error, actually I don't know what fsb for, who x know higher is better

Hi. i m posting this comment with the acer aspire 4740g itself, the RM2499 model.

to b honest, the performance is so so only, especially with the given hardware specs
1) response time is slow, example there is minor freeze opening programs, u cant see instant click and appear situation
2) i5 means 4 cores? but burning the recovery disc make me almost impossible to surf nets with applets and java templates........, like youtube etc
3) too many junks program like the built in games and useless utilities actualy slow down the performance, while alot of the programs are trial only, it takes up unnesscary space too
4) hardware spec may seems tempting, like multitouch pointer, 720p webcam, dual layer dvd ram etc but it takes me almost 1hours ++ to fnish burning the 4 recovery discs.. the webcam resolution is just 640x320, while the pointer is not responsive like in macbook..
5) for gaming i think it is a big NO since it takes so long just to startup simpleprograms like browsers, even microsoft office

will write more when i get to use and explore more with it

just wanna ask something ...
sometimes my laptop always hang if I download a file... I need to force shut down
it happen 3-4 times till today (I bought it about a week)
is there anything I can do?
