It should be the other way around. Using 1080i to display still scenes will cause flickering because of the interlacing that needs to be done. Flickering = bad. The flickering is almost impossible to notice in fast-paced scenes but easily noticeable as you stare at that iguana in NatGeo HD.

And BTW, I'm pretty damn sure that CBS use 1080i for their sport offerings.

Again different opinion:

QUOTE
720p is generally best suited for fast-moving action, such as sporting events. The ESPN family of networks bolsters that claim, as they broadcast in 720p. “Simply put, with 104 mph fastballs in baseball and 120 mph shots on goal in hockey, the line-by-line basis of progressive scan technology better captures the inherent fast action of sports. For ESPN, progressive scan technology makes perfect sense,” the network says on its Web site. 1080i, meanwhile, is generally thought to be ideal for shows where fast motion isn’t an issue, such as dramas and nature shows.

So why do some networks choose 720p while others 1080i? For ESPN, since it’s all sports all the time, 720p is a no-brainer. But what about CBS, which has the NFL and NCAA basketball? When you look at the Eye Network’s programming, you’ll see that it’s constantly in the top 10 with shows like CSI and Criminal Minds, all dramas shot at 24fps. So while it does have sports programming, its bread and butter is on the 24fps side.

While its true that CBS is using 1080i, but we are getting ESPN HD, which is 720p.

I just checked my cable and it says RG 6/U on the outside. Does that mean I have to replace it or is it OK for astroHD? It is about 10 years old by the way.
*
Better replace new cable since astro provide free cable. I was told the installer must replace new cable for the customer. Ofcourse you can always talk to the installer to use the old cable. Problem is with HD reception if you have a bad cable, the noise will show up on your HDTV and it will be just like watching astro during raining time with lots of pixelisation. That is the reason why it is necessary to replace new cable.

i cant confirm Samsung LA32B460 is supported HDMI 1.3 or 1.0,
i hope do not have any problem again for me to watch Astro HD channels,
already feel disappointed while i know my LCD tv do not provide s-video input..
*
Sam LA32B460 should not have any issue with HDMI.

I'm not sure. Can clarify? You mean connect composite to the modulator? But how do u change channel on the astro box? R u using somesort of rmote control repeater?
*
Yes connect composite out fr decoder to modulator in then RF out fr modulator to the RF in of the control unit which then connects via RF cable to my room. I just use the normal astro remote control and can control the channels from the room itself without the need of an additional decoder.
*
Then it is ok. Can work.

i want to but my wiring is done by my uncle when we move house
it's wired up at the side of the ceiling...very neat, clean and unseen
i'm just afraid those astro ppl come and ruin it and install lousy-ly
u know la...they want to finish it fast thn just open pull the cable over and didn't even close it back..didn't do it nicely
my dad also agree to upgrade...he just worry the wiring is done lousy-ly

You and uncle should be mandur. Supervise them.

Sport channels like ESPN are better off with 1080i instead of progressive 720p. High-motion sports are better with with the higher frame-rate 1080i streams instead of the lower frame-rates of 720p.

BTW, most sports channels broadcasts in 1080i, at least the OTA satellite channels in Germany and France. The Sky HD that broadcast EPL matches in UK is also 1080i. History Channel HD in Europe is also 1080i (I have some of their TS here for testing), only National Geographic is still 720p.

The general rule is 1080i is for sport channels or movies or anything that shows fast-paced action scenes. 720p is mostly for documentaries, where still-scenes are more common.
*
Bro, high motion better use 720p while still picture better use 1080i as it is higher res. 1080i weakness is very noticeable if u r using very big TV 42" and above and you can see the scanning line if you look closer.

I'm curious to know where asellus got the info about 1080i is better for sport. From what I read off the web so far, 720p is for sport, 1080i is for movie.

I have yet to find claim about 1080i is better for sport, 720p for still images, and the so called flicker effect (which I don't even notice on HDTVs).
