the funny thing is the launch is just around the corner, and consumers still not updated, on the extra charges and how to change the set top boxes/dish
Its not officially launched lah. How can explain the package price to the public? doh.gif

i "very know" its not launch yet.... astro is a monopoly business concept, so are the decoders...
Why are you arguing about this? We all know about it lah.

QUOTE
decoders are not expensive like vehicles,

for vehicles...you book at the launch date, and take delivery on the 1st phase of ready stocks, 1st come 1st delivered basis..
we do know Malaysian TV network, going HD broadcast rite?? in the NEAR future, Even its in the NEAR future, we can still buy HD receiver LCD's mind not, dvico ( which many of our forumers had already invested in one).
so what i basically mean, is we just get ourself ready, so if Malaysian TV goes HD on the 18th, those who have the equipment will be able to enjoy on that very day itself !!! correct
Why compare with vehicles? Unlike decoder, vehicles has a different kind of market.

Look at iPhone, they announce it during Mac expo, but no one can order it straight away. Intel also announce their CPU, but you cannot get it straight away at lowyat plaza. Same thing with Astro HD. 11th is the official announcement and people can start registering.

Well today is the day. I even stayed up hoping the byond website goes up on Astro site. Till this morning nothing was updated.

Maybe Screamyx is throttling Astro websites too.

The main problem with all HD broadcasts are bit rate compression. That is what you guys/gal shd worry abt. Astro is notorious for that....
*
That is true. On Astro, the Asia Food Channel looks good but on the other hand Cinemax looks like shit as if you are playing movies off the VCD.

I saw the demo at Astro centre. The new decoder is really small! Even smaller than the current one. Picture quality was nice too. Already applied for one, let's see how long it takes to arrive here!

congratz...

so bro.... hows the 1080i HD demo??
*
I don't know if it was in 720p or 1080i. All I know is that it look much better.

Actually, when I went to the Astro centre around 3pm, they have not set up the decoder. I told them if they know about the launch and they said they do but no idea when they can start registering. They told me to give them my number in case any news about HD registration.

So I went hang out for a while at a nearby shopping complex and at about 4pm to call me to let me know they have the demo unit ready for preview. I quickly rush back and lo & behold, HBO HD!! Saw the preview for Incredible Hulk, Shrek, all very sharp.

I don't mind giving away my dish and decoder. Both are old and perform poorly.

If i keep the old decoder will I get to keep the smartcard too? And will it continue to work with b.yond new dish?
*
I think I read somewhere that they will give you a new smart card. The old one will probably be disabled.

So guys, which would be better?1080p or 720p HDTV?
*
1080p of course. But Astro only does 720p and 1080i.

Only way you can get 1080p is via blu-ray or high def movie downloads.

But i'm sure u know that watching 720p on a 1080p tv wouldn't be as good as 720p on 720p.That's what i'm asking.
*
Why would a 1080p TV would not be as good as a 720p TV when watching 720p channel? Both are having the same aspect ratio.

Astro agent called me today. Says something about contacting me again on the 17th Dec. I ask how long does it take for them to process the registration to installing the dish, and they said 14 days.

Anybody can recommend me a good panel below 2K? 3K would do too, but needs a lot of thinking and budgeting first. Below 2K would get me max 720p, but good enough I guess for Astro HD. I'm really tempted by BPL, World Cup and NatGeo in HD.

Can we leave out discussion about what HDTV to get ? There is plenty of such thread under Home Entertainment. This thread is about Astro HD.

so if i were to view the SD channels, i have to view with the two black bars la?? Now thats just annoying!

hehe.. i'm in Kota bharu, the demo unit at KB astro center...
*
Of course lah. Even current Astro shows two black bars unless you set your tv to stretch. This has all to do with the 4:3 aspect ratio commonly used on most SD transmission. doh.gif
