what is the difference between visa electron and visa debit? Is both of them debit cards right?

I take KLM airlines as an example, they charges processing fee for payment made via visa debit, but no processing fee for payment made via visa electron

Yes. Both are debit cards. VISA Electron is the card that doesn't come with overdraft facility. Anyway, none of the VISA debit cards in Malaysia come with overdraft facility unlike those issued in the USA.

Not too sure about any other carriers but Ryanair is another airline that do not impose any fee if you pay using VISA Electron.

What is overdraft facility? Means in Malaysia, it doesn't make any difference using Visa or Visa Electron?

What is overdraft facility?

Means that you can withdraw or spend the money you do not already have but there is a hefty penalty should you do so. All the debit cards issued in USA come this overdraft facility.

For example, you have only US$10 in your account but you charge US$100 worth of groceries at a supermarket. Such transaction will definitely go through without any problem in USA thanks to the overdraft facility. However, the penalty is big too. If i'm not mistaken, it's around US$35 per occurrence even if the overdrawn amount is only a few US Dollars.

Yeah ... sort of ... though some argue that VISA debit card has better acceptance than VISA Electron as VISA debit card uses the exact same platform as VISA credit card.

So, here in Malaysia, if I charged more than the amount I have in that card, means the transaction will be straight away canceled right?

Yes. You can reload through online banking.

Best in terms of convenience and popularity in Malaysia and low monthly fees
1. Maybank
- Being the largest bank in Malaysia with the most ATM
- No annual fee if you choose the no annual fee option but you will be entitled to only 4 free cash withdrawals per month. However, fee will be waived if you have at least RM5,000 in you account when the excess withdrawal happens each time.
- Can be verified with Paypal

2. Public Bank
- Great cash back rewards
- RM12/pa with unlimited cash withdrawals
- Can be verified with Paypal

Forget the rest and just choose either Maybank VISA debit or Public Bank Day2Day VISA debit.

By the way, Tune VISA debit is the lousiest debit card on the market. DO NOT GET IT !

Wow, what's so bad about Tune? I actually paid RM10 for it along with the opening of a CIMB AirAsia Savers acoount. cry.gif

RM12/month?? That's alot of money!! For Tune its only RM10 per YEAR! Is there another option if I don't withdraw cash? I have a savings account for a reason.

Thanks again smile.gif

May I ask what about Maybank's MasterCard Platinum Debit? Any pros/cons compared to their VISA debit?

I just read your post on overdraft facility and VISA Debit in Maybank's website. It has this statement
QUOTE
Penalty fee on overdrawn account: RM10

Is is the same as the overdraft facility you mentioned?

Yes. Public Bank does offer many types of debit card.

Anyway, Public Bank Day2Day VISA debit card is the card issued to you right away when you walk into any Public Bank branches to open an account (except Basic savings/current account). No name will be printed on the card but in case you want to buy something online when are asked to fill in your name as printed on the card, just type your full name as registered with Public Bank.

Public Bank VISA Electron on the other hand, is a standalone debit card without the need to open any account with Public Bank. This type of card comes with free printed statement every month. The annual fee is higher than Public Bank Day2Day VISA debit at RM24/pa but unlike Day2Day VISA debit, the annual fee will be automatically waived when you charge at least RM1000 a year to the card. This card also comes with 0.5% cash back on all purchases except petrol.

I have a CIMB AirAsia Savers account too and the Tune VISA Prepaid card is optional. So i did not get it.

Why is it a lousy card ? Because it comes with so many unnecessary fees. Have you read of their applicable fees and charges ? Did you know that you have to pay a fee each time you reload your card ? The reload fee is at least RM0.50 if you do it online and RM2 if you do it via CIMB Bank's cash deposit machine or over-the-counter at both CIMB Bank and BSN. Mind you that this reload fee isn't waivable. You see how stupid this is now ? Believe me, this is one lousy card. Do not use it !

No. Tune Money changed their fees and charges a while ago. They no longer charge annual fee now. Instead, they now charge you monthly fee of RM1.50. This monthly fee will only be waived provided you spend at least RM399 a month.

The two are more or less the same. Unline the VISA debit, the MasterCard Platinum debit card cannot be used to withdraw funds from Paypal.

Yes. It is the same but this only apply to Maybank's current account. Usually the overdrawn amount is through cheque.

And unlike in the United States, no banks in Malaysia offer you automatic overdraft facility with your current account. There is also no requirement at all to get an overdraft facility there but it is different here in Malaysia.

There are two possibilities to the problem you faced.

1. The online merchant you tried to buy something from only ship their products to certain countries. If this is the case, your card will be automatically rejected when they try to process your card.

2. You haven't activated the card for overseas use. You can activate this feature permanently or temporarily via any Maybank ATM.
