Hi guys smile.gif

I need to travel to Japan soon, and thought of using CC there. Is it advisable? Will there be extra charges to use Amex overseas? How widely accepted is it there?

Or would Visa be a better choice to use there?

Thanks! =D

intrexpo, offcourse if you view statement it's limited to your last one... maybank2u allows us to view our up-to-date transactions under 'Accounts & Banking', try it...

Having traveled to Japan many times over the years it is ok to use CC over there. There is never extra charges for AMEX overseas especially in Japan but you may find some smaller towns who prefer cash, else you will be alright - e.g. hotels, shopping centers...

Problem is that the acceptance of AMEX in Japan is nowhere better than Malaysia. Besides, one might find the admin fee too much.

Thanks guys for the reply. I've checked with AMEX MBB and they say that there is a 2.5% charge on top of the losses from exchange rate.

But Visa on the other hand, have no extra charges, so i might opt for Visa for this trip. Wish i could use the Amex tho, would get lots of points =D.

thanks for the help guys!

Maybank VISA also charges an admin fee for overseas transaction at a much lower rate at only 0.5%. And it's been reported that the exchange rate is quite good too even after factoring in the admin fee.

Your question has been answered in CC thread. HLB Amex is not a popular card. I doubt people will give you response.

HLB Amex Platinum used to be by invitation only, nowadays it's open for anyone with annual income of RM180k may apply.
In terms of customer service & promotion/offer,HLB still need to work hard to catch up the standard of Amex Malaysia.

It's worth if you travel frequently & utilise the benefits/services provided by them.

Annual fees can be waived, if you are a regular big spender. Confirmed with an old time friend of mine who have had her AF for the plat charge card waived for the past 6 years etc. However, her spendings are over millions per year tongue.gif
