Q&A

Q: Can i make purchase in US iTunes account with M'sia Credit Card?
A: You will not be able to make purchases from the US iTunes Store with a Malaysian credit card. The solution to this is to get the iTunes Gift Cards which you can use to redeem for store credit. You can buy these gift cards locally by looking for sellers in the Garage Sales section. (To redeem: iTunes Program>iTunes Store>Quick Links>Redeem)

Q: Can i use M'sia Credit Card to purchase Applications?
A: Yes you can and only valid for M'sia AppStore.

Q: M'sia AppStore sells in Ringgit or US currency? Any handling fee for international transactions using M'sia CC?
A: All transaction will be done in US currency and your respective CC provider/bank will impose a 1% charge on top of that amount paid.

Application price: $0.99 = around RM3.70
Total amount paid with 1% transaction fee using M'sia CC = RM3.74
* For more enquiries, please refer to this thread: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/998251

Q:How To Download Games from AppStore
APlease refer to this thread: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/998251

Q: Nike+ application works with iPhone 3G?
A: NO. Nike+ only works with Nano and 2nd Gen iTouch, not the 3G iPhone. 3GS works because it has a built in receiver.

* The list of applications will be updated on the first post by your recommendations. Will be placing them in categories when we have more recommendations.

Cheers

Thanks Harmeet for introducing FlightTrack :-). This is really one of the best apps I have bought so far especially since I tend to travel now and then.

My list of must-have apps.

1. Twitterfon and perhaps Tweetie
2. IM+ or Beejive
3. QuickOffice
4. TouchTerm
5. Bolt :-)
6. Contacts by Number
7. mBox Mail (for my ridiculously insane Hotmail activity)
8. FlightTrack Pro
9. Wiki Mobile (it's not free but one of the best wikipedia apps on the iPhone IMHO)
10. NIV Bible :-)

I got some nice applications to share.

1. Home Budget
Simple and easy to understand interface, very good for budget & expense planning. Also can take buying receipt picture to attach into expense page for future reference. Before buying this app, you can try lite version to try it.

2. WordWeb
A free dictionary which function like paid dictionary. Get it while free.

3. ColorSplash
A cool picture editing with gray and colorful feature.

4. Voice this
A simple voice dialing for iPhone. Work for almost contact number.

Mover

QUOTE
So, what is this exactly?

Mover allows you to transfer images and contacts to other nearby iPhones via Wi-Fi networking, making this as fast and as fun as possible:

    * At your fingertips: move images and contacts around, pick them up by holding your finger over them a moment and send them where you want them to be with just a flick.
    * No need for pairing: just connect to the same Wi-Fi network as other iPhones and swipe.
    * No need to worry about saving: everything is immediately saved on arrival in your iPhone's Pictures and Contacts, and never deleted by Mover, so that you clear crowded screens without worrying about data loss.
    * … and no need to pay: Mover is available now on App Store for free!
Cool app....if only i have an extra iPhone or iPod touch i would use this app.

The download if fine, no problem so far.

I used to have 5 pages of apps and games on my iPhone.
A week ago.
But I find it slower compared to an iPhone with less apps.
Don't you think so?
Maybe I'm being too picky and particular.
Basically all other games are okay, mostly no problems.
But for Tap Tap Revenge 2,
where the notes lags and lags when falling from the top.
Damn frustrating you know when you screw your Revenge mode because of the performance but not your skills. LOL!

Another is for facebook,
when I view a lot of photos it kinda jams there >.<
I wonder if this has anything to do with the memory,
or its the app's problem. O.o

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks.

Added on May 13, 2009, 9:24 pmOh btw,
Has anyone tried Star Trek?
I'm considering either this or Siberian Strike.

I need reviews =))))))

to make your apps run smoother, is not to waste too much ram from your iphone, first is to purchase free memory to free some of your ram, or u can force quit by holding your home button for 6-10 seconds, force quit your safari and iphod do really helps your iphone saves lots of ram, if you just do the normal home button quit, the safari and iphod still runs at the background, therefore a ram vampire

True.
You actually force quit everytime for these two apps?
What do you mean by purchasing free memory?
Change iPhone's RAM ? -___-

Notice that there are slight differences while playing certain apps on iPhone & iTouch.
Eg: NFS Undercover, iTouch is smoother due to its faster processing speed.
As well as for Critter Crunch, Crash Kart & TTR 2.

Can I change anything to get the same outcome?

yeah, free memory is an apps to free your ram without restarting ur iphone, sometimes ur game is lagging and crash because lack of ram,you need 30+ mb of ram to run an app smoothly, if you open safari and iphone without force quit , u will left less than 12 mb of ram, but with free memory you can restore the ram about 35-40 mb of ram to run a smooth app,but that is still troublesome, i tried force quit safari and ipod and my ram remain 25-35mb+ randomly, if ipod and safari running my ran is less than 10mb, i tried use free memory to scan my ram and tested, it really works.

Thanks bro. You helped a lot.
By the way,
Does this mean that Apple actually allows background processing for both Safari and iPod?
Its pretty ironic since Scott Forstall disagree with background processing in last WWDC.
I'll try to purchase that app and update soon.
Again, thanks man.

The best way to discover New York for tourist and New Yorkers alike.

Presenting UpNext NYC 3D!

Impressive amount of information, and the best thing is, it requires NO NETWORK connection! You can easily use this while using the NYC subway (no network down in those tubes!). Search for ANYTHING! I've looked through results for the places I'm going to shop, and it spits them out nicely.

You can even try the web version by going to www.upnext.com .Impressive representation in 3D! rclxm9.gif

Not sure if there's an app for it but you can access the Chinese character via your iPhone.

Go to Settings/Keyboards/Select International keyboards.

You can select both Chinese Simplified and Traditional or just one and then toggle Handwriting and Pinyin.

Go to your SMS text and create a new message. Press the globe icon on the bottom left screen. You should see the available functions

Yes, I have already enabled this. Since I have crappy command of Mandarin, I love to have a Dictionary app that could let me find the meaning of a certain character.

I have now migrated from Tweetie/Twitterfon to Twittelator Pro for Tweetering purposes. Twitterlator Pro is really the most complete if not one of the most complete Twitter clients on the iPhone. You can do massive things with this and it gets better at every launch.

Complaints? Probably the only thing I don't like about it are it does not have audio notifications like Twitteriffic and the Egg icon is really ... well ... not very nice tongue.gif

TomTom and Navigon Bringing Turn-by-Turn GPS Car Navigation to iPhone

[QUOTE]
One of the featured demos at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday was TomTom for iPhone, a forthcoming turn-by-turn GPS navigation solution. Turn-by-turn car navigation has been a highly anticipated function for the iPhone whose deployment has been delayed in part by numerous hurdles imposed by Apple's SDK terms and restrictions from map providers on the use of their data. Several major vendors have been promising that they are working on such projects, with a small handful of applications even having been released.

TomTom last year asserted at the time of the iPhone 3G launch that it was working on developing turn-by-turn navigation, with additional confirmation coming several months later. According to this week's keynote demo and an associated announcement, TomTom's offerings, which will include both the software app and a hardware "car kit", will become available following the launch of iPhone OS 3.0 next week. Pricing has yet to be announced.

The TomTom solution combines two new TomTom products to provide users with state of the art in-car navigation on their iPhone 3G:

- The TomTom navigation application for iPhone; an Apple version of TomTom's award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software, including IQ Routes and latest maps from Tele Atlas;

- The TomTom car kit for iPhone; a specially developed car kit for secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.
TomTom has also released a brief promotional video demonstrating the hardware setup and providing a glimpse at the software interface:

TomTom is not the only company still promising to bring turn-by-turn car navigation to the iPhone. German GPS navigation firm Navigon responded to TomTom's news with a press release announcing that it will be bringing its own MobileNavigator solution to the iPhone by the end of June.

Before the end of this month iPhone users will be able to kit out their smartphones with the professional navigation software from App Stores across the globe. "With the new OS 3.0 operating system, Apple has made the use of navigation software on the iPhone possible, and NAVIGON has quickly managed to adapt the MobileNavigator software to the new firmware. The iPhone can now be transformed into a versatile, fully functional navigator", quotes Egon Minar, CEO of NAVIGON AG.
Navigon promises a free "lite" version of the software, which will provide maps and the ability to display points of interest but no route guidance, and a full version that will provide full turn-by-turn functionality. Pricing for the full version as not yet been announced.

At the time of the writing of this post, Beejive is having massive problems logging into Yahoo Messenger. The problem may be restricted to Malaysian users only, from the reports from other members here. IM+, even the Lite version has no problems accessing your YM. Be warned.

Then they should have just stuck with the old protocol, even if without push for Yahoo. FYI, IM+ works without push, and it works fine. they could have just disabled push for Yahoo on Beejive, stick with a working protocol, and leave it at that. The other services like MSN, etc., can have their push notification enabled.

Some interesting music apps:
- iShred for guitar
- Bassist for bass
- DigiDrummer for drums

To see what these apps can really do, watch these videos for the live performance that was done using them @ Megamall over the weekend

Another awesome app after that Augmented Reality app, presenting Prowl!

Best non-IM use of iPhone 3.0's push notifications yet: Prowl is a $3 app that pushes Growl notifications from your Mac to your phone. Growl's a global notifier that plugs into everything from BitTorrent apps to iTunes to Mail.

The possibilities really are endless: You can be pinged with a push notification when a torrent finishes downloading, you get a new IM or email, you're mentioned on Twitter, or anything else Growl can notify you about.

You can customize which notifications are pushed to your phone and when they're sent (like only if you're not at your Mac), and Prowl stores up to 30 days of them. Way awesome, since it effectively makes iPhone push notifications infinitely extensible.

Tweet Reel Lets You Tweet Videos From Your 3GS

A new app called Tweet Reel is promising to change the way you share video on your iPhone 3GS. Dubbed the TwitPic of video, the iPhone app allows you to record video on your iPhone 3GS and attach it to a tweet to be uploaded, just like other image sharing services do. It also supplies an interface to embed and share videos on the web and elsewhere. It's a little like YouTube, except you can type out the tweet yourself instead of having YouTube generate it for you. You can download Tweet Reel from the App Store for $2.99 (3GS only).

Regarding PhotoBeamer, there's another app that's made by the same company, BeamCatcher. It's free but it can only receive pictures from the PhotoBeamer app.

BeamCatcher

BeamCatcher is the free app that lets your friends and family wirelessly share photos with you. BeamCatcher works with its companion app, called "PhotoBeamer". This app is only for receiving.

New Version of Fring With iPhone Push Notification

Fring has announced a new version of their iPhone application which supports push notification. Fring lets you communicate on all your favourite social networks including Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM.

What does it do? When you log out of fring, it keeps you in “online” status so your buddies can contact you, and you can choose whether to respond to an alert notifying you that someone is trying to chat, call, send you files, etc.

How does it work? Whenever someone calls/chats you, you’ll receive a beep sound, as well as a pop-up window, telling you that your friend is trying to contact you. Once you click on that pop-up window, it’ll log you back into fring and take you straight to the relevant window.

How do you register? Push Notification is enabled by Apple itself; once you download the new version, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to enable this option for fring, click ‘enable‘ and you’re ready to go.

If you choose to temporarily disable this option you can simply click on ‘more‘ and then on ‘go offline‘; so once you log out of fring, Push Notification will be disabled, until next time you log in.

You can download fring from the App Store at no cost.

Gravity Mobile today announced the availability of its unique MusicID® application on the App Store. The MusicID App is a comprehensive music discovery guide giving iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to quickly and easily identify music, conduct text search by lyrics, view artist bios and lyrics, listen to iTunes songs and view YouTube videos without leaving the application, providing a simple way to find, experience and purchase new music.

MusicID allows consumers to find out about any music they want by searching using an artist or track name, entering a line from the lyrics, or by simply holding their iPhone or iPod touch up to music playing nearby. Once the artist or track is identified, the magic begins as the Gravity Mobile service delivers the most complete set of information available including lyrics, cover art, biographies, recommendations and links directly into the iTunes catalog of millions of tracks.

The MusicID App is made possible by integrating Gravity Mobile's market-leading mobile content, technology, and application design capabilities with the rich Mobile Music Platform from Gracenote, which acquired Gravity Mobile in 2008. Gracenote's Mobile Music Platform is a complete solution for music recognition, search, and discovery with services that can be tailored to fit the specific needs of customers. Gracenote's MusicID App leverages the company's Global Media Database of more than 100 million tracks which is an industry standard in the identification, categorization and organization of digital music. The database is accessed by more than 200 million users annually and processes an average of more than 4 billion searches a month.

"We are pleased to enhance the service we have been providing to iTunes users by incorporating the full suite of Gracenote's mobile music capabilities into an application on the App Store," said Noah Hurwitz, co-founder and general manager, Gravity Mobile. "This MusicID App is an outstanding music discovery resource for iPhone and iPod touch users, providing them with the ability to find and try the latest music, see the cover art and lyrics, and enjoy content in ways they have never experienced before."

The MusicID App is available from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at .http://www.itunes.com/appstore/

rclxms.gif I was going to miss my TrackID service when I swap over from my Sony Ericsson Walkman to the iPhone 3GS later. Now I can continue using it! Excellent!

If you haven't used this application before, it's a very nifty little application that is able to determine (with reasonable accuracy) the title, artist and other info of a song just by recording about 5 seconds of it. So it really helps when you hear a song on radio or at a cafe and want to quickly find out the name of the song. It's even worked with my car indicator clicking in the background. Very impressive stuff!

Hey guys, I'm about to get the iPhone 3G S at the end of the week and I'm a power Twitter user. So I was wondering what is the most recommended Twitter app for the iPhone?

I've heard that Tweetie is good, but need to pay $2.99. Also heard that Tweetdeck is very good for people who are familiar with Twitter and its free. But these two don't have push notifications. So that brings iTwitter into the question.

What are your views on Twitter apps? Push notifications isn't a must but it would definitely be cool to have.

Somehow, i'm against paying any amount of money for a Twitter app coz I think there are other pretty solid free Twitter apps out there. Alot of ppl seems to be using Twitterrific and Twitterfon. Haven't tried them myself.

However I'd prefer Tweetdeck mainly because having columns is a definite must for me smile.gif And also the ability to sync between the iPhone client and the desktop client (across multiple desktops too!). I think both of these features outweigh the lack of push notifications for now.

Of course, I'd be more than happy when/if Tweetdeck do introduce push notifications in the end biggrin.gif

Personally i use tweetdeck on both my iPhone and Mac.

iTwitter push notification only works when receiving DM and mention. But there is a catch, push notification only works when receiving DM and mentions from another iTwitter user.

Other Twitter related push notification apps are:
1. IM+ ($4.99) is a instant messaging apps that are the first apps that provide twitter push notification.
2. Tweet Push ($0.99 + $0.99/months/account) - that pushes your tweets but is not a full-fledged Twitter client. Instead, it uses your preferred Twitter client (Twittelator, Tweetie, Twitterfon or Twitterrific). this is subscription based, It'll cost 99 cents every month for each Twitter account you want to use it on - Not recommended
3. Boxcar ($2.99) checks your Twitter account every 2 minutes for mentions and DM and Push you the message AND let you see it in your preferred Twitter client like Tweet Push
4. Twitbit ($4.99) is a full fledge twitter client that allows you to receive push notifications for mentions and DM
5. iTweetreply ($1.99) similar to boxcar, it allows u to link it to your other primary twitter applications. The application itself is a simple sms like twitter applications

There are some other push notification application that should work with twitter too, e.g. Fring (Free) - not too sure on how long it will stay connected and whether it will push twitter messages to you.

Err, I don't think I know that much about twitter apps, the information i gave are available on the internet. The only twitter related client in my iPhone are Tweetdeck, and IM+ smile.gif

Out of topic: the most innovative twitter update application is Qtweeter (only available on jailbroken device) It is the fastest way for you to update your twitter and facebook from iPhone. But 1 major problem with Qtweeter is, it will make your iPhone less responsive over the time.

cheers

yes they are both instant messaging apps. For Instant messaging wise, I personally prefer Beejive over IM+. IM+ and Beejive are both full fledge Instant Messaging Apps with nice UI. While Fring I would say they focus more on VoIP ( i don't really like their UI) and I can't figure out how the Push Notification for Fring works for skype and other instant messaging client (As they don't have the "remain login period" setting). Currently I'm not using Fring at all. The only good thing about Fring is, it is free.

For Twitter Push notification wise, I can't say much about IM+ and Fring, as I don't Get DM and mention on twitter that often.

hope that helps smile.gif

Yup, for IM purpose and if u wanna stay connected for more than 30 minutes after you quit and still receive push notification, go for Beejive and Im+
The price of Beejive and IM+ are $9.99 and $4.99
Currently Beejive allows you to stay connected after exiting the apps for max 24 hours, while IM+ allows you to stay connected for max 3 days.
There other IM apps that I have yet to try, such as agile messenger.
and if you're a heavy Yahoo IMer, you can go for their default Yahoo Messenger for free, and the best thing is, it allows you to stay connected for up to 2 weeks

here is a list of push notification enabled apps for those who are interested http://bit.ly/hcMf2

Just tried out Booyah Society on AppStore - FREE.

It was developed by ex Blizzard staff who want to give anyone the ability to get achievements for things they do in real life. Give it a go!

The all in one IM+ is much more better.
If I'm not mistaken it's called IM with Twitter which costs $4.99.

The IM+ which is merely for Skype is priced at $4.99 too.
I wonder who's getting that anyway? Hmm...

The point being, how long will it keep u connected and still push messages to you after you quit the application. Most free IM apps that push to you only stay connected max 30 minutes (e.g. nimbuzz, ebuddy and etc.), while Beejive, IM+ and maybe Agile messenger will let u stay connected for at least a day after you quit the application.

If you think the free ebuddy is great, I think you should try Nimbuzz too (it seems better to me, in terms of UI)

Cheers,

Just want to ask. For all the paid apps, lets say USD0.99 - how many we are actually paying in RM? It will first convert to RM then add some tax charges right? How much are we actually paying (roughly)?

you've gotta check it out with your respective CC provider/bank.

like what nokia2003 has mentioned, they might impose a small handling fee for international transactions.

for example,

$0.99 = around RM3.70

certain banks impose a 1% charge on top of that amount. which the total amount will be around RM3.74.

Yes,it does. Its worth a penny. It got password protection for each notes. So, you can choose which notes you want to lock. But if you want a password protection for your photo, i think you should go for Picture Safe.

no offense! but when someone wants to password protect videos, i can imagine it in a deviated manner biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

bumped into too many .3gp videos on the local websites

IMHO your only solution is perhaps load into a mobileme account and then access it remotely.

I am using IM+ and since the latest update, with push notification switch on my battery drain like crazy. I didn't noticed that push was auto on after the update that night and for the first time ever since March my iphone battery drained up completely when I woke the morning after.

Solution: I don't have to be online 24/7 so I just switch it off.

Apple did remind us that push notification will use a lot of battery resource so it's no surprised.

you could try out iXpenseIt. have been using it and i think it's really good. seems to have everything that iSpend has (judging from iSpend's description on iTunes) and the user interface is very easy to navigate and intuitive.

they have a free Lite version, so you can give that a go first. all features are enabled, just that the Lite version is limited to total of 50 records. full version costs only $4.99, compared to iSpend's $9.99 price tag.

If you are not tracking for *very* details type, you can consider Spend - Budgeting (USD0.99), or the Lite Version to help you decide buy or not.

Just tried out Ixpenseit lite, very easy to use and view..but Money 3.0 is rather complicated, needs to create quite alot of things. At the moment is inclining to purchase Ixpenseit but still wanna give the Money a thorough try before deciding to purchase the full version

if anyone looking for an app to track your petrol, car maintenance, tolls, parking expenses. do try VehiCal.
Its free and does the job well. You key in the amount of money spend on petrol, key in your odometer reading, toll and parking expenses and even maintenance like oil change etc. Very easy to use and did I say free? And free doesnt mean you can only key in a limited number of data. No, this program is not crippled like other free lite apps. Oh one more thing, you can set different accounts for different cars as well. And it will even calculate your car's fuel economy

user posted imageuser posted image

Description:
VehiCal is an application designed to track vehicle statistics such as gas, expense and trip information. It’s unique design will give you full range over your vehicles statistics by allowing you to select which entries to include in various calculations. Similar to selecting cells in a spread sheet, the user can select specific gas, expenses, and trip information in interactive sortable tables. This feature, combined with an option to email only selected entries in HTML or CSV format gives you the flexibility you need in the palm of your hand. Calculate fuel economy on entries of your choice without skewing your results if you miss a fill up entry. Email your accountant expense data for date ranges or categories of your choosing.

Am looking for an app similar to Qik (an app released recently which can be used to upload video taken on a 3GS to be posted on facebook, Twitter, etc) that has the same function but to upload photos taken on the phone instead of video. Anyone know of any similar app? Thx.

The Facebook app In iTunes store already has a feature for u to upload pics to ur facebook albums. For Twitter, most of the iPhone Twitter clients available like Tweetdeck already hve a feature that instantly lets u upload a picture to twitpic. Can either choose from ur existing photos in ur phone or snap a new one

you could try out iXpenseIt. have been using it and i think it's really good. seems to have everything that iSpend has (judging from iSpend's description on iTunes) and the user interface is very easy to navigate and intuitive.

they have a free Lite version, so you can give that a go first. all features are enabled, just that the Lite version is limited to total of 50 records. full version costs only $4.99, compared to iSpend's $9.99 price tag.
*
I decided to go for XpenseTracker instead because i find the interface is slightly better and easier to use than iXpenseIt. Furthermore i don't need budgeting features. smile.gif

Not sure whether I'm doing it wrongly, but I did read somewhere that the iPhone (non-jail break) can't really double up as a removable hard disk. I saw an app called Xilisoft iPhone Transfer which seems to be able to do it, but cost $19.95. Are there alternatives?

Can I use the iDisk app instead? Don't quite get the app concept yet though. Cheers

Hi all,

I saw this thread is the discussion thread about iPhone apps. I was just wondering anyone have heard of a Dictionary app for iPhone that is Mandarin to English and vice versa which allows you to fully install the whole dictionary into your iPhone so i don't have to be connected to online. I don't want to go to China and find that i have no internet connection and die standing with no food, just joking. Also speaks out and tells u the pin yin if possible.

EDITED:

Oh by the way iXpenseIT is SUPER GOOD!

Some apps which I use

Stanza (free) - awesome ebook reader, browse and download books from the application itself. There are several catalogs to choose from, from paid sites to free ones like project guttenberg. Downloaded several interesting books for free from Random House Free catalog, including Terry Brook's A Magical Kingdom For Sale - Sold, I highly recommend this book.

Convertbot (free) - units and currency conversion tool

MoneyTracker (free) - simple money tracking application

To Do (free) - simple to do list

RssRunner (free) - simple RSS reader

For anyone who frequents the gym, try out iFitness. Substitudes the need for a personal trainer, with detailed instructions of over 250 diff exercises, with instructions, pictures, and they also recently added videos (vids require Internet connection).

There are a couple of other similar apps that do this, some for free, but what sets iFitness apart from these apps is the ability to record ur progress, create ur own custom workouts from the 250+ exercises, or even add ur own exercise to the list. My personal favourite feature is u can graph out ur own progress, coz it gives u a better visualization of how you're doing and it can be a great motivation.

For only $1.99 i think it's a very good deal for so many features. (Check out its iTunes page to check out the full list.) Plus they seem to be updating their app pretty often, adding more exercises, so it seems the devs are pretty commited to it. Updates are free, like all other apps. Currently the top downloaded app for the Health & Fitness section in the Malaysian and US iTunes store

The downside is there is no lite version to try out though.

Hey guys, I wanna recommend Longman Dictionary of contemporary English (LDOCE) for anyone who's learning english or for advanced users who just wanna know the meaning of difficult words

Here are what I like about the dictionary:
1. Pronunciations for both British & American English
2. Clear and concise definition
3. Examples on how the words are used in daily conversation
4. Thesaurus and grammatical rules

But the price is a little bit expensive sad.gif at $29.99 (~Rm109) but definitely worth it rclxms.gif

@tengyeow,
Can block certain calls ah?! hMm.. I've not come across an app like that but just in case U don't find an app like that, perhaps U could just silent that particular number [put a custom ringtone to that number]; that way, U won't hear the phone ring and won't end up picking the phone biggrin.gif

@gunnerstkd,
I've AirSharing but I haven't quite gotten to using it. I'll test with a powerpoint file tonight and get back to U [that's if I can even find a proper powerpoint file on my computer]

@gunnerstkd,
I've just tried reading a PPS file on AirSharing - the animations go away, and U read it as full page. What you see is originally 2 slides and as U can tell, the format did lari a bit sad.gif

@jackhammer84,
Y don't U check if perhaps U need a passcode before the 2 connects?! Ah well.... read up to see what the developer has said. I was lucky cause I got AirSharing when it was $0.00 smile.gif

@nokia2003,
Eh.. check out the books by 'Six Voices' - nice interface and pretty good content on some of them too d next time U can't sleep biggrin.gif

Now Airsharing is retailing at $4.99 and Pro edition is at $9.99..
It's good that you got the FOC edition earlier...

If animation cannot be shown.. I think if just convert the ppt (or pptx/pps) to pdf will still give the same UI experiences... and maybe get a pdf reader.. but yikes.. that's another paid app..

maybe i'll also try fileaid..

I read in their website.. you can only transfer file to yr iphone to fileaid via the below 2 methods:
1. FTP.. setup a FTP server on yr PC
2. DiskAid.. paid app..

I guess your FTP credentials are not correct?

@gunnerstkd,
I was browsing the App store the other day and did come across a couple of apps which were $0.00 but I didn't take much notice of that, perhaps U could just go through it thoroughly and hope to find something that suits U biggrin.gif

Just tried with PDF with AirSharing - it's typically the same lah.

i installed Fileaid and trying it now.. I copied a 15MB ppt into my iphone fileaid folder and until now also it is still loading "loading please wait"

Not sure whether this is the app's limitation or the phone capabilities in terms of memory to open big files...

Finally I got an error message,

File Viewing
FileAid cannot display this file, it may be too large or incompatible.
You may try to view this file by disabling memor management in FileAid..

there's no Asia map yet for tomtom as far as i know.. the average costs is around $100++ .. check itunes..
it's better to get a gps device rather than the software.. if any of your frens/relative in US..u can easily get a cheap one in fry's electronics..

Am still using google maps only.. found it enough to locate unknown destinations.. but have to stop at the road side to check the map everytime.. icon_rolleyes.gif

@Urban,
As gunnerstkd mentioned TomTom hasn't released their Asia version. They've almost covered the entire world except this region tongue.gif

And averagely, it's about US$80 not US$100++ tongue.gif Just do a search on the App Store for TomTom and you'll see all the different available maps and its respective prices biggrin.gif

Installed and experienced lots of problems.. sometimes it crashes after loading... sometimes chat crashes..

aiya.. should have stayed with ver2.5 and check whether there is problem with the new version before upgrading.. cry.gif

I agree, kinda regret as now unable to revert back. Mine crashed as soon as I tapped on the "Chat" icon.
Lots of discussion regarding v3.0:

So far I haven't experience any big issue on Facebook 3.0
It does what it says and is really a great update.
Much more user friendly and better performance.

These are the upcoming features in Facebook 3.1

- Contacts sync between Facebook friends list and phone's contact list
- Push notification
- Saved, site-wide search

Nope... still crashing and I cannot load my notifications. It'll timeout saying 'there is a problem loading notifications'. But the rest has been smooth. I like that its not as sluggish as before especially when viewing photos. And also scrolling through comments aren't jerky anymore.

I bought IM+ when it was on sales.
Actually they don't differ a lot right.

I'll still get IM+ if both of them are $9.99 though. biggrin.gif

Sorry to bring up new topic, I have not seen any topic on iPhone used as your companion when you jog/exercise/gym. I myself like the idea of using iPhone as the tool and my companion when I workout. During marathon, I also see them wearing ipod/iphone next to their arm (with armband), so I am very curious if they use it just for companion/music or they actually track themselve.

Apps such as iFitness and Muscle Gain are good example of your trainer and nutritionist.
Apps such as MotionX GPS and B.iCycle are good to track your distance/track/speed your workout.

Combining those apps all together, it become powerful tools and companion.

Your thoughts?

currently using iFitness at the moment. pretty good app, helps me keep track with my progress. plus, i tend to forget exactly how much weights i used in my previous workouts, so app's ability to log your weights/reps/sets is fantastic.

on a totally unrelated note:

discovered this application: iPhone Explorer. http://www.iphone-explorer.com/
it's not an App store program and it's totally free. with this you can transfer any files to your iPhone via the USB cable. so you can now make your iPhone double-up as USB Disk Drive.

pair this up with another free app from App Store, FileAid, and you can now have file transfers BOTH over WiFi and cable. Since FileAid is paired up with DiskAid, as recommended by FileAid's developers, and DiskAid is shareware, you can just use iPhone Explorer as a FREE & LEGAL substitute to Diskaid.

Using iPhone Explorer, just transfers your documents to the same folder as DiskAid / FileAid, and you can now view your documents on your iPhone using FileAid.

if you believe that you have a strong case, you can always PM the moderators personally and convey your points.

however, if you ask me (judging from the response), it appears to be lukewarm and a new thread might not be good.

nope, unfortunately you can't bro. you gotta stick to iTunes. anyways iTunes is already doing a pretty good job transferring mp3 from pc to iphone, don't really need a substitute there.

LOL!

Run Pee Mobile
RunPee is a must have app for every moviegoer with a bladder. Run Pee tells you which points in a movie you can safely "run" and "pee' without missing a hugely important plot point. RunPee Application needs Edge, 3G, WiFi Coverage to Function

it is push enabled and hence it will work as if it mimics "background"

so basically with beejive, you can surf net on the safari, play games, on the iPod et cetera, and if there is an incoming IM, beejive will notify you on the screen immediately.

fring is no match for beejive. sorry if that sounds biased

I bought Beejive. Worth every dollar i put into it. Push notifications ftw! It connects and stays connected for as long as you set it. Works fine and easy to connect. Only 1 problem Fring on my Nokia 5800 could make voice calls using my MSN account but Beejive you can only save a voice message and send it. I'm waiting for them to include Skype and Beejive would be perfect.
Right now i'm using the free Skype version for voice calls. Freaking clear voice calls. Super cheap too hehe. Sadly can't use over 3g need to jailbreak. Must do it soon.

In regards to Beejive, I purchased it when I first got my iPhone and it is indeed worth it.

Yup both have push. But ebuddy will stay connected for only 30 minutes after u close the app though, while beejive will stay connected always. If I'm not mistaken.

Didn't buy beejive, thought the 9.99 price tag was abit too steep for me. blush.gif

the Maps app gets its map tiles from maps.google.com, so you need to be online (3G, EDGE or GPRS for it to work correctly.

document editing is not built-in to iPhone OS, please search in App Store for it.

Just purchased MyEyes Traffic yesterday afternoon. It is a great effort for his first app I must say. I did not faced any issue accessing the traffic images during the crucial time frame but several cctvs was down around midnight. Overall very useful although improvements can always be made on the app.

Definitely a must have app for all Klang Valley iPhone users that drives.

vectorian,

thanks for sharing. Can find out how updated are the images? if u look at the time stamp, izzit updated up to within 30 mins?

Are these just images? or video streams of the traffic?

Thanks in advance notworthy.gif

They are all still captured images. So far I see most of them are updated between 5-10mins depending on the highway operators. This is good enough time frame to be able to gauge the traffic conditions I think.

I wish there are more roads / highways covered like Sg. Besi but of course this is not the App's fault.

Bought another new Malaysian app yesterday called 'Malaysia Crime'. It is a free app whereby you can check on reported crimes by date or by nearest to your location.

Simple and sorta useful especially if you live or work in klang valley.

@princess_autumn87,
Do a search, you'll find several - am going out for a meeting so can't search for u right now but definitely the app you're looking for is available on the App Store.

File explorer: meaning?! Using ur iPhone as a very expensive thumb drive? If so, that is also available smile.gif

@afiqkhairi,
If you're in Australia, check out iiQuota. There's also separate apps available for the different respective telcos in Australia. If you're in Malaysia, tadak! sad.gif

Developer Patrick Giudicelli decided to take the compass on the iPhone and use it to help us figure out who's bringing weapons to the sales meeting. The Metal Detector ! app is $.99 and is available now.

The app detects ferromagnetic metals like steel and iron using the iPhone's built-in compass feature. We don't have any guns at work today--Thursday's are knife day--but the app did detect the metal in our staplers, wire in-boxes, and random metal external drives.

Speaking of knife day, because the knife on my desk is stainless steel, the app couldn't detect it. Stainless steel is usually an alloy metal that isn't magnetic. Which means I can continue my stabby ways without fear of detection.

Honestly speaking, tweetie2 is the best tweet program I've used. Its a mile better compare to tweetie. Faster, cleaner interface and much more functions like shorted URL, twitVideos and all.

The best $2.99 I've ever spent for an app.

But if you're talking about free tweet app, echofon wins hands down. smile.gif

you can use the default Messaging app to forward SMSes.

copy the message, paste it in a new message,

tap on the '+' sign beside the recipient's column to add recipients. smile.gif

I don't think there is apps in itune approve by apple for the features. If you go for cydia there is iBlacklist which is awesome, but cost $12 per license which is tie to iphone serial number, which mean you can't use the license into another iphone.

There is now an app in Cydia where you can delete chosen numbers from the call list. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what it is called. You have to do some leg(finger) work and search for it.

Another alternative is to tap edit, then select which message bubble you would like to forward. Then tap Forward at the bottom of the screen. Use the + button to add more recipients.

Wanna chat with total strangers that have same interests or hobbies with you but not sure how to do so. Or wanna pick up the other half without approaching her face to face.

Try Loopt Mix. It has push notification and I think it is faster than Ping!. With Ping! you got to find out the person username, this app does not require to do so.

It is a good socialising app. Check it out. No harm trying since it is free.

mine is working fine. so are my three other peers using beejive on the iPhone.

Added on October 22, 2009, 9:49 amand if my memory is correct, beejive has an implementation to check if the beejive that you are currently using is legit and paid for.

so it appears that you are using a *cough cough* copy. but if you are not, try escalating to their customer service.

I thought I'd give the guy the benefit of a doubt and take a look what might cause his problem be (also samcheesang, you should learn to Google things).. but nokia2003 you are right, all the links I looked at for people with this problem, confirms your guess.

Sigh, If you want to use a software please pay for it.. it's not THAT expensive and if you really think it is.... go on safari and use meebo or something.. mad.gif

I remembered, there is this error displayed in BeeJive, if you use the 'other' version of it. Some sort of a printer error, that is common amongst HP printers.

regarding Layar, there is a local company that already release a basic guide to LRT and Monorail in KL. I think they released it in Android first before jumping into iPhone. You can check it out under setting, choose Malaysia.

The program is called myRails.

MetaFilter, known as MeFi to its members, is a community weblog whose purpose is to share links and discuss content that users have discovered on the web.

dude..perhaps u din read from its page....

NOTE I: WhatsApp DOES NOT use SMS for chat. WhatsApp will use your Wi-Fi connection if Wi-Fi is available. If no Wi-Fi is available, WhatsApp will use your EDGE/3G connection - therefore it is recommended that you have unlimited data plan in order to use WhatsApp.

NOTE II: WhatsApp is currently not available in Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and India.

I guess u hvnt actually try any of those apps...

it is different from the average IM on IM+ or Beejive.

Define "We"

Quite a number of iPhone users here will definitely disagree with your statement

@dinozilla,
I don't know about WhatApps but Ping! keeps us connected to the server at all times. Yes it is onli limited to people with iPhones but my group of friends I hang out with are all using the iPhone hence we usually Ping! one another, EXCEPT for those on the i2G sad.gif

In fact, it's quite a refreshing change. Speaking of which, I should start using BeejiveIM on my iPhone tongue.gif

Go check out the Ping! thread to find out more information.

@psyeo,
I don't see a need having so many of the same kind of application - will just stick with Ping! smile.gif

i guess that's the point

this is from PIng! FAQ
QUOTE
Do I need wifi or 3G?

Ping! works with either wifi or 3G(data) in order to send push notifications to your device.  It will also work on EDGE, but will inherently be much slower relative to 3G.

so excluding the similarity with BBM, u r actually still using the cellular network for the Push
which utilize ur data usage...unless u r on unlimited plan, heavy user can finish off their quota very fast...thats wat stated by WhatsApp as well, reminding u best to have unlimited plan biggrin.gif

if u hav a lot folks who on iPhone and installed Ping!/WhatsApp, that sounds fine, not if u r not, and in that case...using IM+ makes no diff, since ur ultimate purpose is to stay connected with ur pals wink.gif

and indeed, agree to the point...y use so many p2p msg app if they are not inter-connect? stick to the one with the most folks rclxms.gif

Ping! is very different from IM (in my case, beejive)

for instance, if i want to convey something to tinkerbel (but i'm not keen to text her for example monetary issue) but as usual, she is not logged on to her msn, i can still Ping! her.

@diinozilla I agree with tinkerbel on sticking with single apps, my point being, please don't put words in other ppl mouth by saying 'we' without having tested it urself! not everyone are having problem with WiFi/3G data plan/pricing

And ur post sounds very intimidating to the person who ask about Whatapp. He is just asking the opinion of ppl who have actually use it. and u just copy and paste information from AppStore. Peace!

BTW I still use beejive for normal IM connectivity

yup!

i just take two australian networks as an example; optus and virgin mobile (technically operated by optus)

virgin mobile plans typically offer more data bundle, but less calling/texting credit, but the vice versa for optus.

hence if i'm on virgin mobile, surely i will be more inclined to use Ping! as a form of messaging than using the text message?

There quite a few applications of such nature; mostly paid apps. Just do a quick browse and you'll find a few:-

2) Documents To Go

@dinozilla,
A Ping! message isn't *that* big lah; no need to be so kiasu; it's not like ur writing a storybook or something. If you have a data plan, it should be fine; if u don't have then well, it does get v expensive paying; having said that, IM+ or BeeJiveIM also utilises your data services.

Also, there's less spamming on Ping! unlike on IMs tongue.gif

or you can try to Ping! random people and see if they yield
any returns?

who knows you might find a true love via
Ping!

reminds me of the times in malaysia, where random people

I bought a math magic. well, its for a student actually but i think the way they solve the math is really awesome. darn, why i didn't discover it when i was 15..I also bought Fax apps where I can fax any document. But too bad, there's a fax pro and free fax. I thought fax pro is the best apps for fax but i didn't realize there's a free fax where you can fax to anywhere for free. For fax pro, you have to pay USD2.99 per paper.. Darn, wasting my USD4.99 for fax pro..

I mentioned this app in the Ping thread and did not realise this is discussed.

I tried Whatsapp this morning with a friend and I am impressed. Not sure why they say it is not available in Malaysia. I emailed them for clarification as in my limited experience, it worked quite well.

You still need a hardware to broadcast it over radio frequency. However, if you have AUXon you radio, just plug in and there you have it. Hope this help

@dinozilla,
A Ping! message isn't *that* big lah; no need to be so kiasu; it's not like ur writing a storybook or something.  If you have a data plan, it should be fine; if u don't have then well, it does get v expensive paying; having said that, IM+ or BeeJiveIM also utilises your data services.

Also, there's less spamming on Ping! unlike on IMs tongue.gif
*
Couldn't agree more regarding the spams. Just use it for few days...and I would say.... it's cool just for SMS (free) chat (ok.... you hv to pay for the data though wink.gif )

Guys,
Have been using it for awhile and as old rusty guitar player, this app really helps tuning my old-rusty guitar "kapok". Get it at iTuneslahhh....

p/s: Can the moderator move it to iTunes Recommended Apps Forum. Thanks

Actually, the Wifi chip (or maybe the 3G chip) on iPhones 3Gs & 3G has capabilities to transmit and recieve FM signal. Just that apple did not activate the feature

The new iPhone OS that would activate/enable FM transmission would be a

breakthrough. At least, it would a new firmware update would be worth it,

rather than just a security update right?

@tinkerbel
Basically for we are stuck-ed at the mobile number registration page. Once after Malaysia been select and poped out +60 as the country code.

No matter what which telco number that u typed it, it will just pop out a msg says "your country is not supported by WhatsApp. Please be patient as we resolve various carrier issues to get WhatsApp working"

Was wandering, is that because of different version? Cause I download mine since last Saturday and doesnt work. But CLL get his like a day or two earlier then me and he mange to make it work.

Developer Comment in the AppStore stated clearly that it does not work in Malaysia. So those who want to spend 0.99 USD, hold on first.

Ok more on the Wifi and FM for car audio. I have check back the movie, rewind a couple of times in fact. I notice clearly there are no external devices connected to the ipod. So there must be some software or firmware hack, or is it merely hollywood's hocus pocus.

A few of my friends' have problems as well. Mine was seamless. No issue at all...
But the Ping is a completely different story....:-)

Probably give some time for them to work out the issues.

By the way, has anyone bought the Saisuke?

I tried the free version and loved the way it replicates google calendar.. That way, I can see all my different calenders at one go.

@ralli_art,
Once you've made a purchase for an application, the application remains free when there's new updates to it. Maximum session time out is 7 days.

@CLL,
I use iCal and the Calendar app on my iPhone hence no need for Saisuke; mine's seamless too smile.gif

Apple still not approve such app in their app store yet. But if your iPhone is jailbreak, I recommend you iBlacklist, but the app is cost much $12 but worth. Take note that iBlacklist license is per iPhone which can't be transfer to another iPhone.

For time being, apple still not "wakeup" the sleep mode FM transmitter yet (which is already in our iPhone, use for Nike+ app) smile.gif

when the time comes, we will see the app for tune FM transmission in future.

i using iXpenseIt
using the full version. Very well work....
but not sure why u need to key in income.....
it is actually set budget (or u can treat ur disposable income as total budget if u like)
then record spending and see how much u left from time to time...
personally find its useful, except the budget setting tab is not so friendly to me...the rest works well.

i find iXpenseIt more focus on spending (as its name suggests) tongue.gif
covering personal and business

while pocketmoney caters well for personal management
PocketMoney should be good enough if you jz want something to track ur own spending....

i Didn't know PocketMoney existence when i bought iXpenseIt!!!!!

btw...both has lite version if u notice....jz grab them from both to try out....once u satisfy wit 1 of them...
delete the lite versions, and buy the one you decided with....

Happy App-ing biggrin.gif

Limited to 200 expense records. Reading the app info in the app store helps.

I had XpenseIt but me & wife finds it not so flexible. I believed she complained that accounts not cosmizable. Althought this could have changed with future updates.

Now we use Home Budget. So flexible, can customize accounts types, custom budgets, money transfers between accounts, bring over surplus from previous months, custom icons.

Is there any significant different between BeejiveIM & IM+?

I installed IM+ Lite, try to run it and it works fine... so I didnt lookout for alternative. But I see a handful of user here opt for BeejiveIM, is there any speciality in it?

P/s: I rarely chat on msn, I think I run my IM+Lite for not more than 3 times since the day I installed it tongue.gif

@R3dF0x,
The apps which come with the iPhone can't be deleted - hence there's no X next to it. Some examples are:-

# Contacts
# Phone
# Youtube
# Weather
# Stocks

Simple app to manage your expenses. Looks outstanding and works very well.

App Name: MoneyBook

Web Site: http://www.noidentity.ch/
iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/ch/app/moneybook/id337954399?mt

This developer updates the app and they already have sent in version 1.1 for review just waiting for Apple to put out the new update on iTunes. Version 1.2 is already in the works.

Follow them
Twitter: http://twitter.com/MoneyBookApp
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/MoneyBookApp/169747936738

There was another app that used to do this but they seem to have stopped updating.

App Name: pennies

Competitor app link: http://designbyaknife.com/pennies/
iTunes link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore...=287129922&mt=8

Weather App

Pocket Weather World

Web Site: http://shiftyjelly.com/#pocketWeatherWorld

I used to use WeatherBug Elite but i love the look of this new weather app and also has good weather information. They haven't implemented radar yet but it does offer push biggrin.gif

Enjoy! Any new apps i get will update.

Beejive still rules over Trillian tongue.gif

@Kenny_Yong_9,
I don't know what u mean by it can't check MY stocks, it works ok on mine. Just key in the stock and do a search. You get the <stock_code.KL> and click Done.

The few I tried worked.

AirAsia, 5099.KL | Compugates, 5037.KL | CIMB Group, 1023.KL | Green Packet, 0082.KL , 0082OR.KL

@unioptom,
I don't think there's any and will ever be; it was something I was looking for earlier but after consideration think it might not be too realistic. Assuming you follow 10,000 people and each of them post a minute apart, you'll be getting push notices 24/7 and that's gonna be v v v v bad on your batt tongue.gif

you can use boxcar for friends timeline notification, and u can link it to ur favorite Twitter app too. But yea, as tinkerbel said, it will be very heavy on ur battery, not to mention annoying too. I used to use SMS Twitter notification and it is super annoying, lol

Hmm, never thought about it that way before since I don't follow many people on Twitter yet but I expect to be on it more once I get the 3G so, good point *g*. I've been trying out IM+ lite on my iPod Touch on wifi and it seems to be working ok. The initialization is a bit laggy but I'm thinking it might be because it's the free version?

@unioptom,
BeejiveIM is pretty good if you don't mind paying for an app. Plus it's on sale now so if you're planning to pay for a good IM, go fork out the $ and get that app now whilst it's on sale.

I don't follow 10k ppl on Twitter too but well I sorta thought about it when U asked the question tongue.gif So... have U started following me on Twitter yet?! tongue.gif [desperate to get more followers!]

@psyeo,
I've BoxCar but it doesn't give you push notifications for all friends time-line, just err DM & Mentions; but I haven't had a chance to make use of it cause it doesn't support TweetDeck! [I'm a cheapskate admittedly but Twitterific was only free for the desktop version!]

On another note, 1Password Pro is now FOC; get it if you need it and save USD7.99

any of you could recommend me a birthday alert/alarm app for iphone? i've been browsing the net for this for a few days now, but the apps available doesn't match my requirements for a birthday alert app.

what i want is a birthday app that will automatically pull the birth dates from my contacts list and then alert me when it's his/her birthday. also, i want to set a alarm time for the alert as well.

Check this app out called Occasions.
I love it.

http://handcarvedcode.com/occasions/

Enjoy!

Alarm app try Alarm Clock Pro. I feel the iPhone alarm app is good enough for me because other alarm apps require you to open the app when you go to sleep if not it will not work in the background. So you always must remember to open the app up which is a pain and if you forget well your gonna be late for something HEHEH!!!

@unioptom,
BeejiveIM is pretty good if you don't mind paying for an app.

*
There you go, one more minion for your Twitter tongue.gif

Speaking of which, does BeejiveIM support Twitter? I'd be willing to pay if it does. IM+ doesn't seem to stay 'logged on' for push very long if it's not kept open. It keeps telling me that my session has expired.

Great answer to a cynical question. But I can add that when he dies if the app has not been developed yet, he should do it and when another of his kind comes along, he has the answer!

@unioptom,
Hmm.. don't know if BeejiveIM supports Twitter; and thank U for the extra statistic - it's very depressing to see that I only have less than 50 people following me *siGh*

@LoveSexMagic,
If you can provide the information to us, I'll personally make sure the app is developed!

PS: Just checked. BeejiveIM doesn't support Twitter

dude, dont think there is such an app, if there is then its definitely privacy issue here ... whereby an iphone user call u and displays the location

what u can actually try are some gps software which installs on the phone or the mobile me funtion where u can track the phone is, provided its ur phone

no such app for such function ...

maybe the caller can call u and give you the gps cordinates ...

Hi guys,

Need a little help here. I downloaded and app called "whatsapp" but while my friends have no problems using it, I keep getting asked to key in my phone number and country after it boots up. When I do, it says that the Malaysia is not a country that supports the app. Doesn't happen with two of my other friends, just me. Anyone with a similar experience?

Had faced the same problem as u do for 3 weeks after I downloaded WhatsApp. Only today then I figured out the clue to make it worked.

Check did u key in ur phone number in ur iPhone by checking on Settings > General > Phone > My Number . If the field is empty, then key in ur phone number then register WhatsApp again. I got mine to work with this trick. Hopefully it works for u too. laugh.gif

P/s: According to one of the forumer that emailed WhatsApp team, they mentioned that up coming v2.3 will officially support Malaysia telco. thumbup.gif

To get latest free/discounted apps, most of us use AppSniper (paid) or AppConnect (free), lately I discovered an app called BargainBin (free), very useful, you can directly tap on the "Screenshot" to view the picture before you want to decide to download from Apple Store. smile.gif
