hi guys, as the title suggests. this thread is predominantly catered to those of you who use or intend to use the apps from the iTunes store. Therefore, please do not include anything gathered from Cydia or Installer.

in order to be as systematic as possible, kindly use the template in the first post as a guide when giving your comments. pictures of the app functionality are also definitely most welcomed.

i will start this thread off with a comment using the provided template about my review of a downloaded app of mine as an example.
while comments are most welcomed, do try to keep them as constructive as possible

i acknowledge that these facts and figures are easily obtainable from the iTunes review section, but i have been misled numerous times into purchasing them and find them highly inaccurate. therefore, the next time, if i saw a fellow LYN user who had downloaded an app which i am contemplating to get, i will be sure to PM him/her first for further information before purchasing the app.

thanks a lot for reading my post!

Your own personal description of this App: A Chinese-English (and vice versa) dictionary.

Pros:
1. it is free
2. simple interface
3. provides pinyin translation as well
4. provides both simplified and traditional characters
5. works both direction; chinese-english and english-chinese.

Cons:
1. some of the searches can take ages
2. i know that i'm no chinese expert, but shouldn't the traditional and simplified characters be the other way round? (as shown in the last picture below)

Personal User Rating: 6 /10

Conclusion: i would definitely recommend this app. hopefully the search will be faster in the next update.

Name of App: Photobucket

Price: FREE

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: iPhone

Your own personal description of this App: Upload pictures into your photobucket account directly!

Pros:
1. upload your pictures to obtain the IMG, HTML codes without the need of emailing/using the USB cable and then re-upload again.
2. they used to charge, but it is free now

Cons:
1. the third (or last) feature to view your pictures online isn't very helpful as it causes the iphone to freeze. requires holding both power and home buttons for re-initiate.
2. the wheel of circle might sometimes indicates that the picture is still being uploaded, but the fact is , it may be already on their server. hence, if you might end up finding two identical pictures if you try again
3. failure rates are pretty high (see attached picture below)

Personal User Rating: 4/10

Conclusion: Unless the bugs are fixed quickly, i don't think they will be very popular.

Name of App: Super Monkey Ball

Price: $9.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: An adventure game where you guide the monkey ball to its goal !

Pros:

One of the amazing game which has the most beautiful and stunning graphics. By comparing to Crash Kart, Asphalt, Cro-Mag Rally and many other games' graphics, this game's graphics is way better. As Sega had said they actually had to scale up the graphics in order to match the iPhone's graphics capability.

It looks very simple to manage the Monkey Ball but its actually very challenging. It takes some time for users to cope up with its sensitivity which cannot be configured according to users' preferences. Having 110 stages in the it,iIt is good when you find that a $9.99 game wont be so easy to be completed in a short time but you'll get annoyed when you find the last level very difficult to complete.

Cons:

A challenging game but doesnt last long. After completing the game, you will find it meaningless to play all the way back from the beginning.

It saves your game only when you complete one mode(easy/hard mode of 5 worlds) which consists of 10 stages. As if you reach the 9th stage and failed to proceed to the last stage in that mode, you need to play all the way back from the 1st stage of that particular mode when you play next time. mad.gif

Lack of playing iPod while running Super Monkey Ball, but I personally think that this isnt a big deal.

Personal User Rating: 8.5/10

Conclusion:

I would like to say that this game is worth the $9.99. Super Monkey Ball is indeed a great game to kill time, while it also has amazing graphics to entertain you as well. Undoubtedly it is a game which I highly recommend. As I mention above, although it isnt a perfect game that matches everyone's needs, it is still a wonderful game that will bring joy to everyone. I hope those who have purchased and those who will purchase enjoy Super Monkey Ball. biggrin.gif

The last two images is the last level of Super Monkey Ball. When you reach this level, it is believed that you have already get used to the game's controls. But there is still some difficulty for you to complete this stage, as there are narrow slopes as well as funny curves for you to get to the opposite side.

Good luck to everyone who purchase Super Monkey Ball tongue.gif

Name of App: Critter Crunch

Price: $7.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: A beautiful puzzle game for all iPhone users ! Xp

Pros:

It is said as one of the best launch games in the App Store. It is actually a game which is very similar to Tetris and Bejeweled 2. It comprises of 4 playing modes, which are the Adventure Mode, Puzzle Mode, Time Trial Mode and Survival Mode, which is a tremendous amount of content for all iPhone users to enjoy ! biggrin.gif You'll get addicted to it once you start playing this game. With its beautiful graphics (better than Crash Kart, less zig zag pixels) and a super easy gaming way, it is definitely a must buy game for everyone.

It has 40 levels in the adventure mode and you'll get to unlock the other 3 later on. This is a game where you feed smaller critters into larger ones and watch them pop. The longer your chain and the greater your bonus, the larger jewel you get. It is an extremely amazing game with intuitive controls with cute critters !

It consists of 4 modes, which has a long lasting game for iPhone users to enjoy. In addition to that, the puzzle mode is pretty challenging, and also helps users in training their mind as well ! You can go back and play over and over again even after you finish completing it. Worth it right ? tongue.gif

Cons:

The inability to play iPod while running the game. No big deal tho.

It used to be a little unstable in its initial version, as it crashes once you have a long time playing it. But this has been fixed in latest version of Critter Crunch. No longer a con ehhh ? smile.gif

Personal User Rating: 9/10

Conclusion:

A must buy game for every iPhone users ! LOL
Go and grab it fast and you cant stop playing ! Wuuuuuuuhah thumbup.gif

Name of App: Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D

Price: $9.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: An animation racing game for everyone ! smile.gif

Pros:

A game which has been released a long time ago on the Nintendo platform. There are story mode and cup mode for you to enjoy. While racing, you can get items to shoot your leading opponents and beat them. The game is pretty easy and can be completed in hours.

Cons:

Crash Kart is regarded as a wonderful game before many other nice games were released. Its graphics are pretty amazing, but it no longer looks outstanding if compared to other better quality games such as Monkey Ball, Critter Crunch, Spore, Texas Hold'em, etc. I can say that the screenshots looks slightly better than the real graphics displayed on the iPhone. It is quite obvious that there are many zig zags hence the graphics cannot be rated as one the game that has the best graphics in the App Store.

Although it is pretty good in releasing memory, I personally think that this game is kinda unstable, as in-game crashes always occur. Otherwise, it lags a little and the player's movement and controls dont seem to be as responsive as usual. Hopefully this doesnt not happen to every user who purchases Crash Kart, or Vivendi really need to fix this issue in the distant future.

Personal User Rating: 6/10

Conclusion:

Crash Kart s one of the many options among the few racing games. It is also a fun game for users to enjoy but it is not a game that could last long. After completing it, you wont go back to play it again. At least I personally, think so. Hopefully those who love this game dont feel offended. biggrin.gif

Added on September 30, 2008, 1:18 amName of App: Things

Price: $9.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: A simple and amazing to do app.

Pros:

A very useful app in managing your to do list. With its simple and easy to use interface, you will find it extremely easy to jot down all of your upcoming tasks in this app. As you can see in the screenshot, there are several categories in organizing your to do lists. In your new to do list, you will be able to write down some notes and set a due date as a reminder as well. Apart from that, you can also move your task to different categories according to your preferences on the fly. It is just as easy as jotting down some stuff in your notes application.

The latest version gives you the ability to enable icon badge. You can still go back and recall your tasks which has already been completed in your logbook. This may not be necessary and may not be useful for everyone, but it is a good thing if you really cant recall something that you want to. Once you task is completed, it will automatically move the completed task to your logbook.

Cons:

Although you can set due dates for your task, alarm feature is not implemented in the app as it mentioned in their homepage that this feature is not currently existing in Apple SDK.

It turns out to be a little laggy for that <1 second when you have too many details in the particular task.
No big deal, isnt it ?

Slightly high price, but I think its worth since its a forever app to be used.
Moreover, updates will get this app better and better.

Personal User Rating: 9/10

Conclusion:

Always forgetting your upcoming task ? Need an app to help you in organizing your to-do lists in life?
Get your hands on this app asap ! biggrin.gif

My take on beejive

Name of App: Beejive

Price: usd 15.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: iphone yes/ipod touch im not sure

Your own personal description of this App: Magical.....

Pros: Seems that this is the only application available on appstore that allows the app to somehow work background. Under settings you are able to set how long you want the user to be log in. Any new messages you received will be notified by email. It works best with push email such as mobile me and microsoft exchange.

It enables users of AIM and Yahoo to send SMS as well, AIM can only send to US and Canada numbers, Yahoo is able to do international. So far no success on Yahoo sms yet though, will try it later.

Cons: So far everything is to my liking and preference

Personal User Rating: 8/10

Conclusion: I have been searchin hi and lo for something like this, though its quite pricey, but to me its worth every penny. Somehow after purchasing the beejive I dun feel the regrettable unlike the time when i bought spores, crash bandicoot and cromag (on offer still ok).

Hopefully there maybe a drop in pricing soon, so most of you guys can enjoy this app

Pros:
It has 2 modes... one is still mode, while another is 'adjustable' table mode. Great graphics.

Cons:
Only 1 table available, slightly lag a bit sometimes when you hit too fast or often.
Graphics design may look too complex, which makes you hard to see cleary

Personal User Rating: 7/10

Conclusion:
I think so far this is the only one Pinball games available at AppStore. Hope there will be more coming soon.
Also, hope the developer will add in more table for us to choose.
This game looks easy, indeed it is not.... However, I'm sure you will enjoy Pinball whenever you start playing it.
It is definitely worth buying if you love Pinball games.... it's awesome.

Ok i don't know how to make these interesting, I've just purchased kroll yesterday I haven't really spend much time on it so cannot give you guys an in-depth review bout it.

It's $7.99 on iTunes, after playing it for 30 mins i find the graphics is amazing!
Kroll is quite straight forward so it's really suitable for people like me not much complications. What you gotta do is walk and hit but it's abit different in a boss fight.
Sorry i cant post any screenshots because i don't know how to take 1 biggrin.gif

Name of App: Built-in Maps

Price: Pre-included

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: Useful in a way (in finding a general area), but useless in a way (you cannot find specific road names)

Pros:
1. ability to enter precise GPS coordinates (the main point which i'm gonna highlight below)
2. a hybrid of satellite and schematic drawings (can be viewed individually or both)
3. Global Positioning System (GPS) and position drawing from nearby cell tower or wifi provider service centre for iphone 3g and just position drawing for iphone 2g and ipod touch.
4. the best way to impress a non-iphone believer.

Cons:
1. since iphone has not been launched officially in malaysia, the ability to search for a specific road locally is not feasible. however, its precision in a nearby neighbour, singapore is remarkably impressive.
2. the ability to view the driving/walking directions from a first-person-view; maps only provide users with an eagle eye view.
3. extremely power consuming with the GPS turned on working hand by hand with 3G/edge to load the maps.

Personal User Rating: 6/10

Conclusion: we can only be wishful that google will extend their services to malaysia. other than that, i like this app.

HOW TO ENTER A GIVEN GPS COORDINATE TO POINT OUT ITS DESIRED LOCATION (THIS HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED ON AN IPHONE 3G)

1. let me quote an example from a friend who needed to attend a civic TT session this friday but he has no idea of the location (despite being well versed with the KL area)

a print shot of the forum, revealing a set of coordinate

2. it says <3º 6' 21", 101º 43' 56"> and enter them with a space in between each number in the search box (ignoring all the symbols) i.e. 3 6 21 101 43 56 like this:

3. give the app a couple of secs to work its magic and a precise position is revealed.
