haha, but interesting thing is they can never get the really top medical schools in the world ie Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Cambridge and Oxford to collaborate with them . Duke and Imperial are always below these universities in recognition.

you shouldn't complain about imperial or duke.....it could have been some unknown indian or indonesian or polish med schools..... biggrin.gif

the likes of harvard and oxbridge will NEVER do any collaboration with other unis.....do don't even think about it.....

you obviously do not have a working spouse, and school going children, or elderly dependant parents...... biggrin.gif

not to mention the attractions of big city lifestyle....

and of course, if you are a junior doctor, getting sent to a rural hospital means possible stagnation in post graduate training, sometimes forgotten.... sad.gif

and finally, there are no big nice private hospitals in remote areas to join later...... hmm.gif
*
children education is the main triggering factor for many rural practitioners to leave. + the hectic after hours care + long on-call. I reckon if junior doctors were sent there, it'll be kinda intimidating for them because they are required to do everything. But in a way, it'll push them to self-enhance.

Being off topic a bit, i remembered my lecturer told us that if you wanna be rich, go practice in US. if you really wanna serve humanity, stay in oz and go to the rural areas. haha. we were looking at the health systems in UK, US, OZ and cuba. =P interesting stuff.

back to topic, yes we're trying to get more internship spots currently, esp in tassie.

just another question, does it matter where you get your postgrad training? Sorry I'm still not sure how the postgrad system works. haha =P

@onelove89, oh ur in utas?
hm, from what in know of postgrad, there are 2 main exams MRCP, FRCS

MRCP is for physicians (so i think paediatrics is also under this)
and FRCS is for Surgeons

and you have to sit for these exams by youself (or do together with friends)
but the studies, you have to do yourself while ur working, not go back into uni (i think)

not accurate.......

few people in msia will be eligible to sit for the exam......it's an open exam, as long as you satisfy the eligibility criteria........has a passing rate of about 20%.......

compare that with the masters with a pass rate of 100%.....

choose your surgeon carefully......

mrcs is.......but not recognised by msia as specialist qualification....

next step, frcs can sit in spore, hk, or uk.....in the old days, people went and sat in uk anyway........

What "tipping point" do you perceive that will bring about transparency in the context of medical education, training and placement?

just yesterday I asked my dad why doctors don't kinda advertise their services and he'd said he'll get sud if did so and now can already lol ^^"
In my opinion there are some good things that will come out of it though a lot of bad things as well. Like other things advertisements could mislead people ^^"

Ideally, (if u manage to get into post-grad training program right away when u can)

Physician - 1y internship + 3y basic physician training (pass FRACP part 1 and 2 on third year) + 3 years advanced training (cardio, neuro, etc) + relevant research years = consultant

Surgeon - 1y internship + N year Pre-set (presurgical training) + N year surgical training (depending on which surgical specialty)

Anaesthetists - 1y internship + 1y HMO2 + 2y basic training (pass basic exam) + 3y advanced training (pass advance training) = consultant

Not sure about pathologist, radiologists, psychiatrists though lol

Oh btw,

Ophthalmology - 1y internship + N year of waiting + 5 years of training + ?N year of research = consultant, LOL

In the whole context of medicine in Malaysia, whether in education, training and placement, most of the comments have been negative, discouraging and downright demoralising. Yet, year in year out more and more students are fighting for places in med schools.

Quality of healthcare and related services, both in public and private hospitals have been deteriorating amidst daily complaints from unsatisfactory services.

How low can we go? Obviously, we are nowhere compared to Singapore but surely a turnaround is possible though we may be 5 or 10 years behind in quality and standards. (This is not only in medicne. We are getting nearer to become a "failed" country.)

I am encouraged by the economic transformation in Indonesia and most things over there can only improve for the betterment of the ppl.

You only need to have a good and focused leader!

John Hopkins setting up a graduate medical school and hospital in Serdang!

Hope its true and the start of better things to come for the medical fraternity.

Dont know whether its one of similar arrangement like New York University in Abu Dhabi.
