5 years for the first batch to graduate. Can he still walk then?

the more pertinent question, at his age is, not whether he can walk, but whether he will be around to see the graduation.....he is already 86....... smile.gif

we are not wishing him ill.....but he IS 86.....so while we hope he will live to see the 1st batch graduating, we have to be realistic...

that aside, i do not think the jh arrangement is viable, at that price....it will only be able to run if the gov supports it by sending scholars there....making it a crony business, dependant on political money and patronage....

i also have serious doubts about the irish programme....

"The cost to study medicine in the US is very high. Here, the cost will be reduced quite considerably, and that will mean that you will be within the reach of a lot more students who otherwise will not be able to get entry into an American university," added Dr Mahathir.

Apparently somebody forgot to tell the chancellor that it's going to cost more to study at Perdana than at Johns Hopkins itself....

There is only ONE foreign student from both programs. I thought the original objective was to act as a regional reputable medical school to provide JH style of curriculum.

50% sponsored by the gomen and the rest probably by its agencies and glcs.

If thats the case, we may have an M & A in the very near future.

msia needs to downsize its medical education network to no more than 20 med schools, including both ipts and ipta....

generally, a rule of thumb to determine the number of medical schools needed, and the number of new doctors required (once steady state is reached) is one med school per 2 million population, and 100 medical students per million population....therefore, each med school have the optimal number of students per year, ie about 200....intakes of 50 or 100 is NOT efficient or cost effective.....

malaysia's population is about 32 million at the moment....so we only really need 16 medical schools and 3200 medical students per year.......we have 33 programmes and an estimated 5000 new medical students per year....half of which are from overseas....mainly russia, egypt and indonesia......

Other than IMU, Monash, Manipal, AIMST and CUCM, all the other IPTS med schools are running at about 50 to 80 students and are definitely unprofitable. UCSI has lost millions on this program.

Of the excess 1200 graduates, I dont think all will stick to the med line. Some may be better off being trainee officers at places like MACC or even Jabatan Perangkawan. Last year, I think about 100 graduate engineers was recruited to be trainee MACC officers. There need better forensic ppl after the boo boo by the Chemistry Dept. MACC is going hi-tech and there should be more openings for professionals in the near future!

that is gross misuse of money and effort, to go through medical school, and then NOT use their knowledge and skills after....

the tongue in cheek reply above not withstanding, in the near future, many doctors may HAVE to venture into other areas, as there will be not enough jobs.....

the jobs suggested above are still slightly relevant to medical graduates.....but some may eventually have to become taxi drivers....like in some countries.... biggrin.gif

how long can private unis continue to bleed money?....how long before they compromise quality to cut cost......?

or have they already?......

Just asking, lecturer said that pregnant women with HSV 2 active lesions need to be on acyclovir. Isn't acyclovir category B in the pregnancy risk? Is it generally safe to give them the antiviral over the period of their pregnancy?

I'm guessing it's because HSV 2 in neonates are associated with a high morbidity and mortality rates. and acyclovir is in Category B but it isn't really all that bad - no demonstration of risks in animal studies/no or limited human studies available. Therapeutic guidelines says acyclovir +/- C section should be considered in women with active HSV2 in their third trimester, so I guess the answer is yes.

Hi all, is UWS recognised by MMA? If not, any idea why IMU list it as a PMS?

I believe things happen the opposite way in Malaysia - launch programme first, accreditation/recognition will soon follow...

Isn't it obvious by this point that IMU is here to make money - why should they care what happens beyond Phase 1 of the PMS - it's not like the student is going to return to Malaysia anyway smile.gif

Then I will have to rethink including UWS in the UAC application.Like what has been repeatedly pointed out, there may not be enough internship positions for international students, so returning home is still an option.

Well, there's no harm in putting in your application to UWS, after all you get to name more than one university under UAC...but yeah it's still much safer to stick with the ones currently in the MMC list (or even better the ones recognised in Singapore)

PS: Oops, must have overlooked that mistake; MMC not MMA

My mistake, a check with MMC website showed that UWS recognised from 2 June 2008.

http://mmc.gov.my/v1/docs/Jadual%20Kedua%2...%20v2060511.pdf

Thanks Huskies, Limeuu.

there you are.....still worthwhile applying...... smile.gif

although i must say, it's a bit strange, that they accorded recognition in 2008, when the 1st intake is only in their 2nd year....must be something to do with imu's arrangement with them...... smile.gif

smc does not recognise them, nor jcu......

not sure if money is an issue.....

but do note that unsw fees are 60k/year X 6........

uws is 43k/year X 5years......

the difference can buy a reasonable house in kv........ biggrin.gif

especially if returning to msia is on the cards.........

So based on previous comments, utas is 41k, uws is next at 43k, and then a huge gap to 59k or sth for monash and then 60k for unsw? OMG!! I say stick to utas since recognised by smc too! What about Uni of Adelaide?
