it is probably that they are already full in these coursers, and thus not open for applications any more........

they are trying to diversify into other courses, which are obviously NOT that popular (no surprise, why go to a ulu god forsaken place to do business or nursing???)...........hence the need to advertise.......

Probably true. With only 200 places available for medic and the gomen freeze in place, will have a tough time managing the college.

Over the weekend, had the opportunity to speak to the Registrar of the Newcastle University in Johor at an education fair at KLCC. Was informed that medic program will commence intake this September and the fees is about RM90,000 per annum (same as Monash), with a 6 months attachment to Newcastle UK in the 4th year and an option to complete the 5th year over there. Was also told that they have done 2 earlier intakes and the students will be coming back to do their 3rd year locally.

I was told that Medic will be the main program and maybe medical related programs like biomedical sciences may be added on later. No plans to add engineering or business programs as their reputation is on Medic!

The issue is with only 100 places, will it be sustainable? The Sheffield University fiasco in Perak is a grim reminder.

Let me see....RM90,000/year or GBP18000/year. Total 5 years is GBP90,000 which is roughly similar to what you pay if you go study in UK. Looks like the only saving is in cost of living.

In fact I was told it is cheaper in UK at Newcastle for the first 2 years @ GBP 14,000 per year but from the third year onwards, it would double up to GBP 28,000 per year.

uk med schools have a differential system of fees, (which is more honest, and reflect the actual cost of the actual academic programme), where the 1st 2 pre-clinical years are charged like any other lecture/lab based programme, and the 3 clinical years then charged higher as reflecting the change in teaching........that's what optiplex means, as the averaging out for the 5 years will come also to about 90-100k pounds........

as for living cost, some smaller towns in uk is not much more than kl.......and you also have the option, at least in the 1st 2 years, of doing some part time job to help with expenses........

similarly, those who partner to uk from imu have little savings from the fees.........

I think you will stand a chance. Just like Sunway Monash in the earlier years, sticking to preset qualifications may not be able to get the quota of students. Students would prefer Monash or IMU due to "better" reputation.

for that kind of money, why not go straight to uk?........(i know, it's much more troublesome applying direct, and they may likely not recognise a- as equivalent to a levels a)

the status of the newcastle msian mbbs is unknown at the moment, as far as uk and other country recognition is concerned........spore will likely not recognise it, on their 'clinical years in home country' requirement........

if you are eventually restricted to just working in msia, i would not bother spending so much money, just go to any one of the ipts med schools........in msia, it matter little the kind of training you receive.....

how much they gonna raise non of us can tell, but i think this can be part of the local political issue in the the future, let say if the rate of tuition in overseas raise same goes to local ipts, i assume government sending lesser student to overseas and place them more to ipts/ipta, will it be more competition to fight for a place in medic at tat time? den y not the rich and capable one go directly to overseas?

those are well develop countries with assume with the constant rate in raising their tuition fees, what do u think the tuition fees in malaysia for the next 20yrs while u r living in a fast developing country?

well it's just my 2 cent though laugh.gif

2 or 3 years ago, 1 British Pound is worth about 7 Ringgit. Now it is worth about 5 Ringgit. So why say "Fat hopes"?

Not constant. Sometime more, sometime less. Supposedly to adjust for inflation etc that but I doubt it.

that is average......they are now 26, 27..........the average age of a newly graduated doctor in the commonwealth system is 24-25.........it's the same for msia as well........

Added on March 26, 2011, 8:56 amfull fees at the usual english speaking commonwealth countries have gone up to the actual cost, and plus as well........older forumers may remember the old days when the fees were still subsidised, and how it gradually creep up to present levels.......

it is thus unlikely they will go up significantly any more, except for the inflation adjustments....

in spite of such high fees, there are no shortage of international students applying, sometimes 10 times the actual number of places available.....

at the rate of increase in msian ipts fees, some may not be worth it any more, and one might as well go straight to uk med schools, some of which are 'affordable' at current exchange rates........note that the learning experience in a uk nhs trust hospital is very different from most local hospitals......

If u can afford then going overseas is surely the better choice. Though there are a few good ipts like imu or pmc but most local med school are lack of academic staffs. The fees in imu or pmc etc are not cheap either. Better go to australia or uk to study.
But my advice is don't take up medicine if u r not passionate to become a doctor. For those who r thinking of money, fame etc might have to reconsider because in 5 years time, doctors might be jobless. Now already there's a glut of HO in all hospitals. Spending so much money is no longer a good investment

I talked to the deputy head if medicine of Monash the other day. Apparently monash can take in as many students as they want as the lecturer to student ratio is very very healthy. The only limiting factor now is the lack of classrooms. When the new building is completed I won be surprised ifthey take in 200 people.

However for this years intake they only took in about 120 plus when they can fit 160 at the current infrastructure.

Many of the new and expensive IPTS are dependent on Jpa and Mara to provide the students. We will have a better idea when the next batch of scholars are announced. Indonesia may also be a reciprocal beneficiary if the maids agreement is sorted out and the gomen is looking for cheaper alternatives.
