Try reseting the network and setting. I just able to unlock my iPhone 3G from Rogers (Canada phone carrier) with turbo sim that I get online. Before getting the sim, when I slot my Maxis prepaid card, it says invalid sim. After getting the sim invalid sim becomes no sim. After resetting for several times, no sim becomes no service (I think you're on this point) and keep reseting till I get my maxis.
Try putting your sim card on another phone and do a test call.

Please read the thread below as answers to your queries are available @
Your welcome. It took me 4 freaking hour to install the freaking turbo sim .
Anyway, I don't think it actually voids warranty. My cousin who got his iPhone 3G from Fido (Roger's sister company) was able to exchange for a new one from apple store in downtown Vancouver. He said they cannot tell after you restore it.
Next Generation iPhone Case to Have Matte Finish? Enhanced 3G?
QUOTE
Alongside the artist rendition of the upcoming 5G iPod Nano, iLounge also weighed in on the rumors surrounding the next generation iPhone.
They've been told that the next-generation iPhone will come in two different storage capacities across 3 distinct models depending on your local mobile carrier. The models are described as "3G, enhanced 3G ("3.5G/3.75G"), and mainland China versions". The case is said to be the same general design as the current model but with a "less scratchable matte plastic body". A previously leaked case image is included above which matches this description.
iLounge reports that only one version, however, will be made available to specific countries. China will obviously only get the Chinese version, while other customers will only get either the 3G or 3.5G models depending on their local carrier support. We would expect that U.S. AT&T customers would be given the 3.5G model which is likely to support the new 7.2 Mbps data network being deployed by AT&T.
Just got my new iPhone 3G last Friday and it is so much better than I expected. Love it to bits... except one problem. Sometimes when I'm being called the iPhone asks me to slide to answer the call (as my phone is always on lock in my pocket).
But it won't register my slide. Sometimes if I frantically hit the Home button and keep sliding it will eventually answer, but that's not often. The issue is slowly getting worse, I've had this issue 5 times today (out of 20-30 phone calls).
I'm running 2.2.1 firmware, the phone is NOT jailbroken, and I've also looked at Apple's Support forums with no answer. The phone came with 2.2 firmware but I upgraded it immediately after I opened the box.
The apps I have installed are IceTV, Facebook, Metro Melb, EAT, DRINK, Shazam, Twtterfon. I've hard reset and also turned the phone off for a while, to no avail. Apple's support forums suggest a restore doesn't help either, also that this problem has been on some phones since before 2.2, and besides, I'm at work at the moment and can't restore till tomorrow anyway.
I have no other issues with the touchscreen at all. It's quite annoying as, well, everyone laughs at me at work while I frantically try to answer calls on my "dumb", "wanker" phone
Thanks everyone.
Richard. "
Taken from MacTalk, just wondering if anyone else has encountered a problem like this?

There are methods to disable the EDGE connection as provided on the post u linked. You can disable or enable 3G connection in the iPhone whenever you like.
iPhone Generation : 8gb Iphone 3G Unlocked? (or Part Number): Maxis Unlocked Current Firmware : 2.2.1 (5H11) iTunes Version : 8.1 PC/MAC : PC Jailbreaking software : none Problem Encountered : Reception cut off when loudspeaker activated during calls Steps Taken So Far : Restored firmware via iTunes Screenshot of Problem(if applicable) : Other Information/Remarks : Not sure if losing receptions every now and then is a problem as well, but the most significant one is whenever i place a call, whether it is connected or not... the reception will cut off and asked me key-in sim pin to unlock... and sometimes during calls ter-press loudspeaker.. it will give a screeching sound..
All other things works flawless and fine... even songs on loudspeakers works fine.
