Hi guys,

Went to see DR Koay Eng Cheng yday at Sunway Med. Was told that i will need to go thru two procedures:

i)Septoplasty (to correct the deviated septum)
ii)Turbinectomy (remove some meat which is causing the swelling in one nostril)

Just want to hear from those who have gone thru these procedures? Is it necessary? Does it solve the problem and will the problem recur again in the near future? Also any complications that may arise from it and how long to fully recover after the operation?

This is my first time undergoing any sort of surgery/procedure therefore im quite nervous and do not know what to expect.

Also is Dr Koay Eng Cheng any good? Anyone experienced surgery under him before?

Pls share and thank u very much for the input.

The dr Khor from Pudu, is his clinic opposite Puduraya with an ear signboard? One of my relative got tinnitus 10 years ago and the 1st ENT that he can think of is there? He went there to see him and got slaughter for more than rm500 just for some in nose and ear diagnostic and medication. Told to return after a week then recommended him to Tung Shin for nose x-ray. This time recommended for a surgery due to his nose not symmetrical which causes this tinnitus. Of course he would go for 2nd or 3rd recommendation before any surgery. Again got slaughter just for some medication and consultation only. So he went to Pantai Cheras and HUKM none of the specialist recommended surgery all they can say is they couldn't pinpoint the cause it could be due to some nerve damaged. There's no such thing as 100% symmetrical for a nose, its normal. So he has miss out the golden period of getting his ear cure just because the 1st doctor only interested in surgery which he can charge higher and delayed his time. During the 1st 2 times visit the doctor only give him the impression of $$$ sign only. Now one of his ear are deaf with no apparent reason.
Anyone here had tinnitus and got it cure, please share the experience.

No ear signage. That row has quite a number of specialists there. I have not paid 500 for his treatment before except for his surgery.
Dr khor's clinic entrance is all brown tinted glass.

He is reputable just like his brother but he is not as cocky as his bro.

As my dad is gonna visit kuay cheng boon @ sunway later in the morning, I'm thinking to look for some info or review from the internet. Despite some other negative feedback, guess what shows up as my first google search result when I type his full name:

You can also go to UMSC. The ENT specialist is an Indian chap. Can't remember his name now.

Pretty good. My dad got 'upgraded' to special rate in UMMC (the Gov branch) because his case was special - it seems there is special learning value with his case.
The only down side is a bunch of medical students will tengok2 the surgery. The doctor still does the surgery but my dad was the subject of the day. Got tape the surgery some more for my dad to see in the follow up! biggrin.gif

You will have to sign off rights for the docs to use the surgery video as they please. Maybe they write reports or it become library archive, who knows?

We did get second opinion from Dr. Gan Tong Nee. Same outcome, only the price is different.

From what I know Sinus surgery is not a clear cut operations. The surgeon needs to judge how much flesh to remove and how much to retain. Too much removal could cause excessive scarring, and the problem comes back again. Too little, like no effect.

I will suggest go to UMSC first. The specialists and treatment are quite good and comparable to private hospital. Besides that, the fees are very cheap. The only downside is that you need to go through the medical students checkup before you can really meet the specialists.

U r right, no matter which doctor we go for, to me, the experience of the doctor is the most essential, go for 2nd or even 3rd opinion for any operation and choose the best. We have consumer's right hahaha :-D

Hi cedriccheah,

thanks for sharing about your experience. Really helpful. I've been having sinus for about 3 years+. It's tough on me because I go through 11 packets of 50 sheets of tissue like every 2 weeks. Then I also occasionally have headaches. I am a teacher in a private school. So it's an air-conditioned environment (no choice), but I protect myself with the humidifier near me and a scarf covering my nose and hot/warm water. but there are days where it's just bad.

When my friend first discovered my "flu" problem she suggested that it might be sinus and took me to see a specialist in Tropicana Medical Centre. I can't remember the doctor's name as it was 3 years ago. That's when I discovered that I had sinus and a lil bone growth in my left nose. He suggested for me to do a simple laser surgery (which I now realised is FESS).

I have spoken to my insurance agent and he reckons insurance can cover with overnight stay in hospital for surgery.

So here are some of my questions:
1. Did FESS required you to have an overnight stay in hospital?

2. How long is the recovery?

3. What is the recovery like? Any problems faced or symptoms shown? E.g. nausea/headache??

4. What is the FESS operation like? Does it require anesthetic?

I'm hoping to go for a consultation with Dr. Megat in Columbia Asia Puchong soon and find out if the surgery is what I need. Am currently suffering from a headache due to sinus. I was given nasal spray and antibiotics after my consultation in Tropicana. But I found that it didn't help. So I stopped and never took since then. I'm currently not on any medication. I ensure that I rest well, avoid aircondition (if not then I keep myself really warm and cover my neck with scarf). Am trying to diligently ensure my room is clean. Sometimes I breathe in hot water vapour from hot water (steam method) to help clear airways). I always have to blow my nose every morning and before I go to sleep. And if its a bad one, throughout the day.

5. Have you found any natural means that helped?

6. Did the problem came back after the surgery? (I don't want to have the surgery if the problem is just going to return)

Just to share my experience on Koay Cheng Boon. He is not very good or professional in my opinion. I had few ocassions of throat irritation and nausea in the morning few years back. I went in and out of his clinic for few months. Always ask me to come back in 2 weeks.

The symptons persisted after the few visits. Never in his mind that they could be caused by something else. Only until the symptoms getting worse with heart burn, then I decided to see a Gastrologist. I was finally diagnosed with gastro acid reflux problem.

My conclusion is he is jeopardizing patient health and wasting my time, money and health. He could be too indulge in his discipline and too commercial to get hold on money. Whatever it is he is not very good.

Dear friends
My husband gets his sinusitis since August 2014. He took already some antibiotics but it has not helped till now. His sinusitis getting worst.
Almost all the time, he can not sleep since he can not breath, some backflow, mucus always coming down his throat and nose and very often headache. Nasal spray helps just a little.

This forum helps us a lot to understand more about sinusitis.
But we still need more help from you all…
It means a lot, if you could share your experiences to us.

We read here very often, that 1x FESS mostly will not help. Need to do the 2nd FESS which called revise surgery. Is it true? Does someone know, why FESS must be done 2x? is the 2nd surgery the same process like the 1st one?

What kind of surgery preparation normally must be done, before the doctor takes the decision for the next step? (only CT scan?....)

We heard the name ‘Dr. Megat @ Columbia Asia Puchung’ very often. Is she really good? It means a lot for us, if you would like to share your experiences with her.
Does someone know her contact number or email addresse?

As a 2nd opinion, which doctor would you more prefer? Please feedback.

Many many many thanks.

Did you do the two procedures by Dr. Koay Cheng Eng?
How is your experience with him?

It would be great, if you would like to share your experience with us, since we have to learn a lot from others experiences.

I went to dr Khor to fix my sinus problem after years of taking antibiotics and nasal spray. Same problem as ur husband which includes pounding ear pain when lying down flat, blocked nose every morning, unlimited mucus running down my throat with burning sensation in eyes like hay fever. Antibiotics and nasal spray are just temporary solutions
