hi everybody,

i have a question. why Pet association such as PAWS and SPCA don use the funds to neuter/spay the strays, and free them back to the street to reduce the number of strays but to catch them back, await for adoption, and put them down after 2 weeks?

it is just a thought. sorry if this question sounds stupid.

shawty....boroi gile along tu...and dual oldschool CRT!! w00t! biggrin.gif

anyway.....a long delayed update on my baby girl raisa....

she has been classified as chronic renal failure...so her kidneys can be considered as kaput-ed...

shes lost alot of weight....now only weighing 2.4kg and shes so boney...no signs of it going back up.

also...theres an organ above the kidneys that produces red blood cells....and its very common that when the kidney fails...that tends to go as well....sadly thats the case with raisa....although not too bad....that organ is still producing red blood cells...but below the normal range...just a lil bit only....0.1 below the normal range.

theres also another toxic thing in her blood....forgot the name...i remember the max of the normal range is 194....when she was first admitted, it was 1001....yes one thousand and one. after 2 weeks of admission and drips and pills etc etc....it has now dropped to +/- 350 and has stabilized there. which confirms her kidney failure.

so now, she has to be injected with sodium chloride (or something like that) twice or 3 times a week. 100-120ml under the skin on her body per side...near her back legs....which totals up to 200-240ml. she gets bloated after the injections, but its alright...goes off within 5-6 hours. biggrin.gif anyway, these injections are a form of dialysis for cats...since they cant really be hooked up to a normal dialysis machine. this can be done at home...but im still pretty freaked about poking her with a needle so i take her to the vet for her injections...cost is about RM25 per round at the UPM (serdang and PJ) veterinary and its also the same in healing rooms subang.

another unfortunate result of the renal failure is that she pees alot...and i mean ALOT...worst still...she almost has no control of her bladder...and practically pees everywhere... shes peed on my bed several times already doh.gif she pees even more right after the injections...coz the injections cleans the blood, picks up the toxins, dirt or watever u wanna call it and throws it out through the pee...

shes also barely eating... 3-5 pieces of her dry food per day...which is way better than when she first came back...that time it was 0. but we still have to continue force feeding her. vets has prescribed vitamin b complex to help with her appetite....its been almost a month of 2 pills a day and not much improvement. but at least she doesnt spit out whatever we're force feeding her. she swallows it like the good girl that she is...

force feeding was initially with soft a/d diet because cats tend to like it. but in the long run this aint good for the kidneys and we have to move to soft k/d diet...unfortunately, cats tend to NOT like food thats good for their kidneys....which means they dont like the soft k/d and dry renal food. currently raisa is on a mix of both dry renal and soft a/d. wat i do is crush the renal and mix it with some water to make it smushy...then add a lil bit of soft a/d for flavouring and put it in the syringe...we usually feed her about 1 or 2 syringe (25ml syringe) fulls 3 times a day. she also is slightly dehydrated... i overheard the vets saying her dehydration level is at 5% which is not too bad.

vets has also prescribed another pill called azodyl. these pills are really good. when we first got raisa back from the vet, vets gave us some of these pills...but after it finished, it was pretty hard to find....and she was not alert at all...and she looked very weak...close to the point where we thought she was giving up and dying....luckily, my fiancee managed to find some last stock of the pills at some vet .... so we quickly bought it, and started giving it to her again twice a day....and she looks so much better now....MUCH more active, running all over the place...climbing up the stairs, and also more alert. almost like the way she was before she got sick. the unfortunate part about these pills is that theyre really hard to find...almost every vet we went to told us that theyre hard to find...and that theyre really expensive...RM170 per bottle of 60 pills. another unfortunate thing about them is that theyre HUGE! so ur gonna need skill to feed it to ur cat...which i dont have but my sister does fortunately biggrin.gif

for the moment, my baby girl is doing alright...vet gave her a year mebbe less. so...im gonna have to prepare myself i guess. but still hoping for the best as we heard a story from the vet of a 10 year old cat with renal failure.. who survived to be as old as my baby girl...19. that cat has had 9 years of SC fluids injected and still surviving last i heard....unfortunately my kitty was diagnosed when shes 19...so its pretty slim that shes gonna live for more than a year cry.gif...still thats what hoping for the best is for...

also, if anyone knows where i can get more azodyl around pj,subang, shah alam/mid valley area pls PM me..im rarely in this thread....and i have abt half a bottle left...

Just let the mother eating the kitten food together with her kittens... do you know what, female cat after birth need alot of protein to cover everything they loose? yes its true.. the mother have spend time eating to feed the kitten inside, and then nursing, she need alot of protein and fat (from kitten food) for herself to build up her body. and kitten sometimes still milking from mother when they are together until the mother rejected them to suck the nipples.

So for your case, it is good if the mother eat kitten food for this time for her body. she need lots of energy to grow back.

If you look closer to your iams kitten food bag, it says there that within a few months (i think) give kitten's food to the mom as to produce milk and such.

Hi Pumpkin,

Its not a stupid question at all.
I think the reason is that PAWS and SPCA need to euthanize the cats and dogs after a two week period because they are too many of them out there sad.gif
Also, they can't afford to spay / nueter and then release as the number of growing strays rises each day.
That is why its most important for all pet owners to be responsible for their pets.
Don't breed because you think you can produce cute looking kittens or puppies.
Kittens and puppies are cute when they are small but when they grow up some will think they are no longer cute and cuddly and then they will throw these poor animals out in the streets shocking.gif
People nowadays give very lame excuses when they no longer want their pets... e.g. moving house, having a baby, too busy with work etc.
If you know that you are planning to move, have a baby or busy with work then why in the first place get a pet? doh.gif
Think first before you ACT!

I'm always feeding them Iams kitten.
To train it sometimes it's quite hard. What you can do is try to put their poop in the litterbox and asked them to smell it. Once they know where it is should be easy.
Another tip is that if you noticed they are pooping elsewhere you need to show that you are the boss in the house. Cats know when you are angry with them and you need to do it on first offence before they got into habit of doing it.

Added on February 1, 2010, 5:56 amMaybe I'll take my turn but it's too much photo to put and I can't decide plus its 16 of them (excluding few other stray outside the house that my gf constantly feed)

If it's any help I use baby shampoo.

-rant mode- mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

Anyway, before I board my flight to JB tonite I wanna rant about the boarding prices in Miri. I have a 3 month old kitten that needs a place to stay since I'm going back home to west malaysia for holidays.

There isn't many boarding places here, I would say less than 5? So anyway, I went to the first vet that gives boarding services and was quoted RM30 per day and double of that on Chinese New Year. shakehead.gif And bear in mind this rate is for a 3 month old kitten. I was kinda shocked. I guess if people were really desperate they would just send their pets there but I was gonna be away for more than 2 weeks. I grant you that place looks good and the owner is kind and nice but seriously..RM30 per day?

So I went to another animal centre which has a bad record before. I read a complaint that someone brought their cat there and after coming back from their holiday, found out that the cat was eaten by the guard dogs. shocking.gif Now, when I went there I was quoted RM25 per day, which is still quite expensive when you think about it. I was discussing the price with my friend and one lady didn't even give us privacy. You don't go around leaning your head towards people and staring when they're talking about money now do you..Gosh, I was put off by that.

So in the end I found a nice place where I was charged RM15 per day..more on what I was expecting since the normal rate (at least in west malaysia) is around that. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's not like I don't wanna give the best for my cat but I do think the prices were very very expensive.

Now what I don't understand is why would they charge so expensive. The first vet provides aircond so I'm paying RM30 for the electrical bills ar? Not everyone has friends who wants to take care of cats, and not everyone can afford RM30 per day. It feels like they're doing it for the money rather than doing it out of love for animals.

I am also not saying that these places aren't good as I've heard some good reviews on the first vet mentioned but I think the rates are ridiculously high. Very pissed off. *rant mad.gif

So anyway, I'll be off on the plane knowing my baby is safe (albeit a bit sad to know that I'm away).
