@iphoneiphone,
iData 1 needs to be 'bought' together with an iPhone; if you haven't yet collected yours when you go pick yours up you just have to go tell them U want to go with iData 1 plan. If you've oredi collected your iPhone I don't think you're eligible or entitled to go with this plan anymore [am not 100% sure so u need to check with Maxis] - instead, U can opt for the hourly/daily/monthly pass.

hmm, a quick question.

Does internet tethering usage reflected in the cellular network data statistics as well?

I've tried tethering to my pc via usb with the phone idle (no application running) and i notice there is a few MBs increment for both upload and download columns.

yes. any sort of data usage that utilize the phone's network (in this case Maxis) will be reflected, be it tethering or on the phone.

if a plan/package already signed, say iData3
moving to iData2 is a change of contract, and usually u need to compensate for the amount of the period u signed for before u can move it

e.g.
you signed iData3 = RM99 = 3GB plan for 12 months
after 3 months, you wanna change/stop/downgrade(may b u wish to go oversea for a lengthy period)
so u hav a remainder of 9months to go
u actually hav to compensate RM99*9 = RM891 before u can terminate
of coz if u refer to a lower rate package, which means they will try to cover back the "loss" if u would hav stick to the existing plan

if u talk about upgrade, of coz they are happy for no extra penalty, becoz u r gonna pay more to them!!

it already stated
7 Downgrade of rate plans will be subjected to penalty.

the worst way they can do on u is as above
but usually it can boil down to how to negotiate with them
but they still own the legal right to get u pay the penalty

so is better to think before u subscribe

@unioptom,
VOIP calls via Skype isn't available on the 3G network; U will need to connect to wifi to be able to use VOIP; hence it's not gonna take up any additional data tongue.gif  If you don't use data much, go with iData 2; U won't regret it because in the long run you'll really be saving *smiles*  I certainly am glad I swapped over from Unlimited RM99 p/month to RM50 for 500MB p/month.

Hmm... this does put a damper on things. I suppose Maxis wouldn't want to break their own rice bowl by allowing competition to their own core service. hmm.gif

I'm currently on the 5MB package with my HTC and two months ago when I tested out a Twitter client for less than a week (I did let it run on auto update the whole time) , I ended up paying the max RM250 for data that month. I'm now a little paranoid that I'll end up going over my data limit on the iPhone once I get it.

well, i went to maxis center today and that's what exactly they say. thanks for helping

@dinozilla
thanks for the long explaining. thats very helpful. that was clear enough.
well, i think i've no choice but to subscribe the monthly passes which is RM58 / 500mb. thats the cheapest way. i would be happy if maxis can come out with a new cheaper plan since i didnt use much of the data.i only use just to check email, fb and some sites mainly for news.

Had gotten my 1st bill from Maxis after subscribed the iData2 plan. Surprisingly, iPhone data counter shown 80mb+, but in the phone bill it were only 75mb+. Will keep on monitoring the usage for this month again.

@iphoneiphone,
You're welcome. Maxis should be sponsoring this forum, or at least give me some free credits for all the help I'd been putting in tongue.gif

@unioptom,
RM250 would equate to uhm... 2500kb right?! It's still less than 500MB smile.gif

@fylon,
There you go ; now you know 500MB is indeed more than suffice *smiles*

Indeed, i would go for iData 1 if that plan offer the phone at the price of iData 2. 500mb seems way too much for none tethering user. At least for me. *wink*

well...but then....u won't know how ur usage will grow....
i control my usage on first month...and start let loose on the 4th week....
yet still below 300MB
so i m expecting my usage at normal rate (a lot FB everyday, limited surfing, once a while update app) could be still within
as of now, after 1st week+(12days) from my cycle, i clocked 150MB+
calculate by this usage, it should be still within...so 500MB good for me....
if u really not tat much usage, 250MB is a good go for u...after all, can consider upgrade to 500MB if u find it insufficient later...

Haha! Yea.. I know the reason why my usage were quite low, cause my iphone were hooked on WiFi connection in my work place & home most of the time. 3G service were only used when im outdoor.

@fylon,
It's good to have the Internet Tethering feature/function for rainy days; it can be quite helpful.

haha. anyway, i want to ask you. do you put fake APN when you don't need using the cellular data network? or you just leave it like that. because im scared if we don't put fake APN when we are at home (when wifi available), it tend to connect using cellular network without realizing it.

got my first bill few days ago..well actually i check it through the maxis site..it total up to RM33++ since they minus RM80 from the advance payment of RM400 (i'm on iValue 1 plan)..i checked my data usage which is about 42++mb..so without the plan meaning pay as you used..that 42mb cost me about RM200++ so i dont think that RM250 = 2500kb unless its a different rate on a different plan..

@scofield,
If you're on a plan, the data rates are 0.5sen/kb. Also, the way the Maxis bill comes is that it'll charge you for your total usage but they'll credit it back. Perhaps U wanna double check with 123 Y you're being charged for data usage since 42MB is within the plan you're signed on.

@azim61,
Check out http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/868281 for the APN settings; if that fails, go to Maxis and tell them your problem. They will need to manually enable "something" on their system. Forummer nokia2003 reported the same issue and apparently Maxis had to do "something something" on their system; once that was done, he managed to get online *smiles*

PS: Don't ask what "something something" is because we really don't know! tongue.gif
