oh really? no contract needed? i would be happy for that.
i thought idata plan 1 also need contract.
so, may i ask you how to subscribe?

from *100# there's no option for it. meaning i need to go to maxis center and subscribe, am i correct?

-thanks tinkerbel. im happy that all the forumers here are very helpful.

well, i went to maxis center today and that's what exactly they say. thanks for helping

@dinozilla
thanks for the long explaining. thats very helpful. that was clear enough.
well, i think i've no choice but to subscribe the monthly passes which is RM58 / 500mb. thats the cheapest way. i would be happy if maxis can come out with a new cheaper plan since i didnt use much of the data.i only use just to check email, fb and some sites mainly for news.

haha. anyway, i want to ask you. do you put fake APN when you don't need using the cellular data network? or you just leave it like that. because im scared if we don't put fake APN when we are at home (when wifi available), it tend to connect using cellular network without realizing it.

yes, it should be more than suffice. but we'll see how much total data i will use for this month. smile.gif
oh anyway, just wanted to share something with you. last month (before i subscribe the data monthly passes), it was 'pay per use', when my bill came, i see the data usage count on bill is PERFECTLY same as my iphone count which is 52KB tongue.gif
so i guess, for a 'non-jailbroken iphone user' like us, it should be match as the iphone's counter and bill.

but for this month, we shall see how it goes.

okay, almost 2 weeks in, i'm reporting my experience with the maxis 32gb 3GS on ivalue1 plan (500mb data monthly):

1) JBed, installed SBsettings
2) since I have wifi at work, 3G/EDGE is off via SBSettings
3) used FAKEAPN as well
4) disable all NOTIFICATIONS, PUSH, FETCH is manual
5) take screenshots of *100# (unbilled amount) daily

results:

as of today, 12 AM, my unbilled usage is RM 26.35 (unbilled usage on 28/12 - RM 11.00)

Cellular data counter has been static since 28/12 (when i bought the phone).

So far doesn't seem like I'm leaking data, but will monitor everyday.
*
just my concern. you can't check either your data is leaking by monitoring your unbilled usage as the unbilled usage is only for call and sms charges for that particular cycle. any data / extra charges / added service is not calculated in the unbilled usage. last time i thought the same thing (bcs thats how i monitor too), but after my friend explain it to me, (he work in maxis) unbilled amount is only for call and sms charges. any other than that would be charges in the bill itself when the bill come.

you can check using the same method ONLY if you're prepaid users.

Dear All,

This is a very long but interesting thread indeed.

I am planing on buying iPhone with Maxis iData RM50 or iValue RM100.

After read some of messages amongst thousands in these thread I have few questions that I hope some of you can answer:

(1) iPhoe tends to 'leak' internet data usage by it's software/status/game/etc update.
Meaning, although you are not using your iPhone (for call, sms, internet, game, etc) for 3 days,
it keep idle, your bill will still increase due to this so called 'leak'.
Am I correct?

(2) Some people say that if you are on iData RM50 plan, you are safe because 500MB is way more than enough.
What I don't understand is if the 'leak' in (1) is true, is it possible that the leak can drain your data usage until the 500MB finish?
So how come safe?

(3) This 'leak' is stoppable. May I know how?

FYI, I've been using Maxis (at first Hotlink) since 2000 and so far I am happy with it.
I do not have plan on changing to Digi, Celcom and whatsoever.

It would be nice if somebody active in this thread could make some LATEST summary of problem and way to solve it in the beginning so that it would be easy for other people like me to get the important information.

Thanks.

hello dude. ok first and foremost i will answer your question first.
for the question (1) - yes, sometimes there is a 'leak'of data usage depending on what apps do you install. some apps got ads which you can't avoid. eg, games. but if you totally 'EXIT' the apps properly, the leakage would likely no more. bcz some people tend to just exit the apps unproperly and leads the apps to running in background. and let me remind you, Jail-break iphone easy to multitask (meaning here apps can easily running in background) - thats one of the reason why people JB cz to have multitask function.

for q (2) - yes 500MB is way more than enough. it is impossible the data leakage will suck up untill 500MB. maybe they can suck up but not 500MB la. i guess la. well in my case, sometimes data leakage will be around 20 KB only.

(3) leakage can be stoppable if you jailbreak i guess.

ok the summary or best to say sugesstion from me,
you buy the iphone with iDATA 50, dont jailbreak, and lessen your third-party apps which you dont use so much, monitor your usage from time to time. thats all. so far, i never had any problem with iphone or the data leakage. as long as you got the data plan everythg should be ok and just monitor and maintain the usage.

like i said before, ITS JUST A SUGGESTION. HOPE EVERYONE DONT MISUNDERSTAND ME. smile.gif)
after all, its your money, its your right to choose how you want it to be biggrin.gif

hope thats help smile.gif

well just in my humble opinion,

i guess the best solution for those who complain about the 'data charges problem' and did not want to jailbreak the iphone is to get a data plan that suits you the best.

thats the best that i can think of. well just think back whats the point of having an iphone without fully utilized the function right.

subscribe a data plan and all settle.
no need to worry so much infact you get to enjoy your iphone to the max. no jailbreaking process needed as well.

as well all know, iphone goes very well with the internet. thats the point of having a smartphones after all. smile.gif

thats just from my point of view. cheers all smile.gif

but some user complain jailbreak can't help to prevent the prob as well...
yes, iphone goes well with internet but most people lives in free wifi area 24 hours per day, no point to pay extra 50?90? buck per month.

Just found a link, explained quite clearly:
http://www.k-director.com/blog/solutions-t...or-maxis-users/
*
who say no point? i guess only you bro tongue.gif
maybe you are the only one who lives in wifi area 24h per day. i would say most people actually want the data plan. it just the data plan price is not 'attractive' enough for most of us.
i dont mind paying rather than to get shocked when the bill come.
after all, it make your life easier as well.

hi all,

from what i read, it seems like for a maxis non-JB unit i will not able to control my data usage, is it true? Is it anything i can do or any software to download? I dunwan my bill ends up a few hundreds. BTW i am using the ivalue2 from maxis which give me 1gb per-month. do you all think it's enough for normal web surfing usage?
*
just wana share this from my own experience.
actually, from my point of view, i would say non-JB unit is more efficient when it comes to data usage control.
as far as i using the iphone, my data usage counter on iphone match my bill. but my friend who did jailbreak his iphone always have problem every month when his one doesnt match the bill.

so just a suggestion, dont need to JB your iphone and just try to monitor your data usage.

anyway, trust me, 1GB per month is WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH. im quite an average user when it comes to data, and honestly i never reach more than 150MB per month. i on push email, IM, surfing around 2-3 hours with safari.

for normal surfing, its more than enough. smile.gif

i beg to differ. i'm using a JB-ed iPhone 3G and still i am able to control my data usage with the help of SBSettings (inclusive of disabling APN access). i believe with SBS, i am able to handle my usage more efficiently as well (toggle on/off, no unnecessary data flow/usage).

TBH, i don't see why a non-JB phone would be more efficient in terms of data usage control. i believe it's the other way around. as both will have apps which access to the internet for updates/scores etc and with JB, you will have access to settings/configurations to control the data flow.

and yes, 1GB is more than enough for a casual user. smile.gif
it's not 100% accurate but it gives you a rough figure of how much you've used. and yes, it does not includes WiFi data usage.
*
well, just like what i said before, its just a from my own experience, bro. dont get me wrong.
and why JB is more efficient eh? tongue.gif i dont see also
and plus, i can say people who JB their always have a problem here and there.
but people who dont JB only have a minor problem which is a normal thing for an iphone. tongue.gif

Am stepping into my 4th month with my 3Gs. So far i never encounter any data usage issues. To be honest, mine were un-JB set from Maxis. And im on iData 2 package which offering 500mb bandwidth per month. Each month my data usage will never exceed 100mb. The highest that I ever capture is 78mb. Meaning im only using 15-18% of my total bandwidth each month.

Of cause, diff user will have different usage. For me, im using it mostly for checking & replying my work email, checking FB, skype (most of the time), MSN, Yak! & Ping with few friend of mine that stay at other side of the world whenever im not in with WiFi area. iPhone is a smartass where it will toggle between 3G data / WiFi data when u're having both at the same time and depending on the signal strength. Pardon me if wrong in this statement.

I would say, the bandwidth control is more to user differ. Main thing is, u gotta know what ur doing exacting and what apps are using. Keep an eyes on those apps & game that required internet / real time data exchange / transfer. Most apps will display the alert of using 3G data when u run it and if keep an eyes on reading those notice. icon_rolleyes.gif

I was once been shocked too by this issues before I had my set on hand. But after I gotten it, and pay attention that my usage, usage overloading aint really put me in deep shit. All to all, i would said it depend on what u've done to ur phone.
for me, it was. Is around more or less 5% different from the actual one stated in the bill.
*
glad to hear this bro.
im also never had any data usage issues. and i didnt JB also.
and you are correct, more or less 5% diff only from the bill.

oh emm gee!
thats is so damn cheap!
the price is so tempting. but im sure the line wouldnt be as good as maxis or digi or celcom.
umobile coverage sucks. and plus, they can offer that kind of plan with that kind of rate because their users is not that much.
