okay, almost 2 weeks in, i'm reporting my experience with the maxis 32gb 3GS on ivalue1 plan (500mb data monthly):

1) JBed, installed SBsettings
2) since I have wifi at work, 3G/EDGE is off via SBSettings
3) used FAKEAPN as well
4) disable all NOTIFICATIONS, PUSH, FETCH is manual
5) take screenshots of *100# (unbilled amount) daily

results:

as of today, 12 AM, my unbilled usage is RM 26.35 (unbilled usage on 28/12 - RM 11.00)

Cellular data counter has been static since 28/12 (when i bought the phone).

So far doesn't seem like I'm leaking data, but will monitor everyday.

This is a very long but interesting thread indeed.

I am planing on buying iPhone with Maxis iData RM50 or iValue RM100.

After read some of messages amongst thousands in these thread I have few questions that I hope some of you can answer:

(1) iPhoe tends to 'leak' internet data usage by it's software/status/game/etc update.
Meaning, although you are not using your iPhone (for call, sms, internet, game, etc) for 3 days,
it keep idle, your bill will still increase due to this so called 'leak'.
Am I correct?

(2) Some people say that if you are on iData RM50 plan, you are safe because 500MB is way more than enough.
What I don't understand is if the 'leak' in (1) is true, is it possible that the leak can drain your data usage until the 500MB finish?
So how come safe?

(3) This 'leak' is stoppable. May I know how?

FYI, I've been using Maxis (at first Hotlink) since 2000 and so far I am happy with it.
I do not have plan on changing to Digi, Celcom and whatsoever.

It would be nice if somebody active in this thread could make some LATEST summary of problem and way to solve it in the beginning so that it would be easy for other people like me to get the important information.

yes, iphone goes well with internet but most people lives in free wifi area 24 hours per day, no point to pay extra 50?90? buck per month.

from what i read, it seems like for a maxis non-JB unit i will not able to control my data usage, is it true? Is it anything i can do or any software to download? I dunwan my bill ends up a few hundreds. BTW i am using the ivalue2 from maxis which give me 1gb per-month. do you all think it's enough for normal web surfing usage?

i beg to differ. i'm using a JB-ed iPhone 3G and still i am able to control my data usage with the help of SBSettings (inclusive of disabling APN access). i believe with SBS, i am able to handle my usage more efficiently as well (toggle on/off, no unnecessary data flow/usage).

TBH, i don't see why a non-JB phone would be more efficient in terms of data usage control. i believe it's the other way around. as both will have apps which access to the internet for updates/scores etc and with JB, you will have access to settings/configurations to control the data flow.

and yes, 1GB is more than enough for a casual user.
it's not 100% accurate but it gives you a rough figure of how much you've used. and yes, it does not includes WiFi data usage.

Am stepping into my 4th month with my 3Gs. So far i never encounter any data usage issues. To be honest, mine were un-JB set from Maxis. And im on iData 2 package which offering 500mb bandwidth per month. Each month my data usage will never exceed 100mb. The highest that I ever capture is 78mb. Meaning im only using 15-18% of my total bandwidth each month.

Of cause, diff user will have different usage. For me, im using it mostly for checking & replying my work email, checking FB, skype (most of the time), MSN, Yak! & Ping with few friend of mine that stay at other side of the world whenever im not in with WiFi area. iPhone is a smartass where it will toggle between 3G data / WiFi data when u're having both at the same time and depending on the signal strength. Pardon me if wrong in this statement.

I would say, the bandwidth control is more to user differ. Main thing is, u gotta know what ur doing exacting and what apps are using. Keep an eyes on those apps & game that required internet / real time data exchange / transfer. Most apps will display the alert of using 3G data when u run it and if keep an eyes on reading those notice.  

I was once been shocked too by this issues before I had my set on hand. But after I gotten it, and pay attention that my usage, usage overloading aint really put me in deep shit. All to all, i would said it depend on what u've done to ur phone.
for me, it was. Is around more or less 5% different from the actual one stated in the bill.
