It will just redirect itself to use Edge or GPRS.. Remember, the 3G on and off button is there for you to turn off the 3G connection for battery saving, it doesn't turn off the ability to connect online via other protocols.. IPhone being as smart as it is, will kick in to the other available options.. changing the APN settings ensure that even those protocols would not be able to go online.

Give it a try, turn off 3G and attempt to use something that uses internet.. you will see a "E" icon next to your signal bar
*
not just iphone, all phone is....switch to next available protocol...
don ever think onli iphone is smart biggrin.gif

as say...if so worry of using cellular network on iPhone OS, better off use ipod touch...

Sigh, it's not the fear of using cellular network on IPhone, it is to allow us to control our usage.. even if so.. I got  money, I like, I buy the Iphone.. what's it to you??

Can the IPod touch make calls? can it sms??? yawn.gif no? Does it have GPS? no? So, just leave your  own comments to yourself.
*
tats the thing dude...

u want mobility, get iphone...it connects u anytime....control? control urself....get a tool for tat or manage urself..

jz as a game device? itouch works fine, and don need worry about paying bill...call/sms? jz get a cheap phone will do...

depends wat ur requirement....i jz don see a point y one keep complaining of the connectivity since this is why an iphone worth to buy for...

if u think i offending u for this...then i ll remain silent after this....

for general iphone user wannabe...think before u buy...if u want the connection, stop piss about the connection...i don mind u piss Maxis for the plan rate tot tongue.gif
but it still cheaper compare to celcom!

@dinozilla,
1 year later U'll be thinking of getting the new iPhone and then once again get stuck with Maxis tongue.gif
*
lol....tengok dulu....

as said lo....i m hoping digi can do well enof in integrating the 3G network, and start to expand it...
then compete head to head with Celcom 3G and Maxis 3G
i sincerely believe they can offer competitive pricing if they can...

also iPhone exclusivity is ending...
who knows Digi can secure a contract with apple on next iphone and offer a better-than-maxis package? *cross finger*

Actually I've questioned them back, why is it that in the bill they can clearly see my data usage but they can't tell me/allow me to check what my data usage is..

Their reply is " we don't offer such a service" ... makes me wonder, how then do we monitor our usage, if they claim the IPhone one is unreliable.. or maybe that is the whole point.
*
reason can be:

1) Maxis CS is useless, can't even do simple thing

2) jz like Apple not yet enable the RF chip in 3Gs, Maxis know they can check for you, but no officially support yet...so no service.

3) We are betting on a wrong Telco, who cant even able to track ur data usage for u

for starters, jailbreaking is not even endorsed by apple and also deemed illegal by them?
*
its immoral from their sense...
but current jailbreak is make use of exploit loophole....
jailbreaker does not modify the core/kernel...
so it is not illegal to jailbreak....

tats y til now Apple not suing any1, but rather spend time to find way to seal it off...

QUOTE(wz3k @ Nov 7 2009, 06:19 PM)
Yes I understand that it is illegal and not endorsed by apple but that does not explain it. Unless my understanding is wrong, technically jailbroken apps are also calling the same dialer/protocol as the Apps Store apps to get to the internet. And so far in my experiment, using jailbroken apps via 3g, I still see the data counter increasing.

It's like you connect your laptop to the internet via a modem with data counter, and you're using illegal aps vs genuine apps. The only way data going in and out, regardless of legal or not is via the modem and the counter will still count all data. Unless of course, IF in iPhone case, the jailbroken apps are using separate dialer but I doubt that this is the case.
*
technically, only 1 channel it can go through...hence there should be recorded...
so far everything of mine is recorded, regardless Cydia, or others....
perhaps those who experience that they hav such an issue...could actually track down when this happen...
e.g. which app after u use, it does not recorded in counter, but u know this app access to internet/network (wifi/bluetooth excluded).

every data transfer will involve both download and upload...
the data usage should be accumulate the total, not just one of them

turn off ur auto notification
remove app that potentially used up data, but not in use all the time...
check if you hav Mail configured to always update from your SMTP/POP

Btw tinkerb, do u mind explaining "Maxis pro-rating your entire plan."?
I don't get that part.
*
if u r activating the iValue/iData on the collection, and it is away from your usual billing cycle day (your statement date)
usually it will be pro-rated to the next billing cycle.

Say, ur statement date is 1st of the month, and u collected at 15th, means half month...
assume u taken 1GB plan, so it will pro-rated for the recent month in ur bill ---> 500MB

QUOTE(tinkerbel @ Nov 25 2009, 11:01 AM)
@iphoneiphone,
iData 1 needs to be 'bought' together with an iPhone; if you haven't yet collected yours when you go pick yours up you just have to go tell them U want to go with iData 1 plan.  If you've oredi collected your iPhone I don't think you're eligible or entitled to go with this plan anymore [am not 100% sure so u need to check with Maxis] - instead, U can opt for the hourly/daily/monthly pass.
*
if a plan/package already signed, say iData3
moving to iData2 is a change of contract, and usually u need to compensate for the amount of the period u signed for before u can move it

e.g.
you signed iData3 = RM99 = 3GB plan for 12 months
after 3 months, you wanna change/stop/downgrade(may b u wish to go oversea for a lengthy period)
so u hav a remainder of 9months to go
u actually hav to compensate RM99*9 = RM891 before u can terminate
of coz if u refer to a lower rate package, which means they will try to cover back the "loss" if u would hav stick to the existing plan

if u talk about upgrade, of coz they are happy for no extra penalty, becoz u r gonna pay more to them!!

it already stated
7 Downgrade of rate plans will be subjected to penalty.

the worst way they can do on u is as above
but usually it can boil down to how to negotiate with them
but they still own the legal right to get u pay the penalty

so is better to think before u subscribe

Indeed, i would go for iData 1 if that plan offer the phone at the price of iData 2. 500mb seems way too much for none tethering user. At least for me. *wink*
*
well...but then....u won't know how ur usage will grow....
i control my usage on first month...and start let loose on the 4th week....
yet still below 300MB
so i m expecting my usage at normal rate (a lot FB everyday, limited surfing, once a while update app) could be still within
as of now, after 1st week+(12days) from my cycle, i clocked 150MB+
calculate by this usage, it should be still within...so 500MB good for me....
if u really not tat much usage, 250MB is a good go for u...after all, can consider upgrade to 500MB if u find it insufficient later...

QUOTE(hades86 @ Nov 30 2009, 11:33 PM)
hi, can someone make sense from this statement?

taken from Maxis frequently asked questions
[attachmentid=1331266]

No.3 and No.5 answers is a little bit confusing....basically what they say is unlimited packages is capped at 3GB but the speed wont reduce even after we exceeds the capped limit  rclxub.gif
so why the use of word capped?

Frequently Asked Questions
*
originally...u pay 99...u get unlimited...but threshold 3GB, once u exceed, speed reduced....

now...u pay 88...u still can get connect(they wont cut), again threshold 3GB, once u exceed, speed remains...but u now pay for all the extra u used after 3GB
