3G is just a denomination of speed.

celcom probably just clumped the entire internet usage (2G, 2.5G, 3G, HSDPA) to 3G.

at the end of the day, you are being charged based on your usage (nothing to do with your speed)

hence, it doesn't make difference if you have used 1MB on gprs or 1MB on 3G

Added on November 7, 2009, 5:35 pmAFAIK, maxis operates this manner as well.

tq for the info...so if i tweak the apn, i wouldn't be charged for any data usage anymore? how bout gprs, how do i disable it to avoid anymore gprs data usage?

thanks again for the replies. very much appreciated because recently 3g data usage and gprs usage have been quite substantial in my bills.

@anti-LAx2,
If you're successful in tweaking your APN U will totally disable data services and that includes GPRS smile.gif

Thanks tinkerbel. Mind to clarify what cause jailbroken phone data statistics to be inaccurate? I have fakeAPN on all the time unless when I want to connect. I also disable ads using the hosts file already.. thanks

for starters, jailbreaking is not even endorsed by apple and also deemed illegal by them?

its immoral from their sense...
but current jailbreak is make use of exploit loophole....
jailbreaker does not modify the core/kernel...
so it is not illegal to jailbreak....

tats y til now Apple not suing any1, but rather spend time to find way to seal it off...

Yes I understand that it is illegal and not endorsed by apple but that does not explain it. Unless my understanding is wrong, technically jailbroken apps are also calling the same dialer/protocol as the Apps Store apps to get to the internet. And so far in my experiment, using jailbroken apps via 3g, I still see the data counter increasing.

It's like you connect your laptop to the internet via a modem with data counter, and you're using illegal aps vs genuine apps. The only way data going in and out, regardless of legal or not is via the modem and the counter will still count all data. Unless of course, IF in iPhone case, the jailbroken apps are using separate dialer but I doubt that this is the case.

technically, only 1 channel it can go through...hence there should be recorded...
so far everything of mine is recorded, regardless Cydia, or others....
perhaps those who experience that they hav such an issue...could actually track down when this happen...
e.g. which app after u use, it does not recorded in counter, but u know this app access to internet/network (wifi/bluetooth excluded).

Hi biggrin.gif

I didnt have the time to read the posts but I was told that iPhone doesnt track VOIP data. Prolly that's why your data is crazy high.

On another unrelated note, I switched to DiGi because of the same reason (I have no iPhone tho sad.gif). I'm sick of tip-toeing within my RM8/5MB data limit with Value Plan 50 and opted for RM48/3GB with DiGi instead. Whee biggrin.gif

I have indeed check that my fakeAPN is working. I've tried with multiple apps (App Store & Cydia apps) and confirmed no internet connection is available if I turn off wifi and have fakeAPN enabled. Now I'm tracking my data usage using iphone like a hawk.. hahaha...

One thing I realized is that Maxis does not change your billing cycle. Mine was 17th before changing to iValue and still is afterward. Not sure how they're going to pro-rate stuff as I just got my iphone on 3rd Nov.

Does anybody know of a FREE app that can auto reset data statistics on your billing cycle? Hopefully there is one out there but so far I could not find it.. I know you can manually reset but.. in case we forgot..

Shame on maxis for not providing a way to track data usage online or otherwise. It should be illegal for them to do this!!

Anyway, many thanks for you guys out here.. this forum is a great help..

@wz3k,
I've NO idea what causes the data to be inaccurate but most people here on a jailbroken set reports the data usage statistics to be inaccurate.  I haven't jailbroken my phone n thus far data usage statistics seem to match my Maxis bills.

Another thing to take note is to make sure your fake APN is indeed working; some people have reported it doesn't work on theirs.

@Icehart,
zijian possibly wants to Internet Tether hence the thought of downgrading?

@wz3k,
Your Maxis bill cycle will not change; your data usage and free minutes will be pro-rated based on when you collected your iPhone.

Thus far, no such applications to help track data usage.

Omg.. read up to 10 pages and I'm loss...
If i use WiFi, will effect the data rate as well?
If i use EDGE, obviously eats the data rate..
But why they even charge when we use WiFi then?
Whats the point of having WiFi?

Btw, i'm still new and just ordered an iphone from maxis, subscribing the ivalue2/155permonth last few days..

@isaac89,
Maxis sets are officially unlocked sets. No official iPhone units will come jailbroken. To Apple, that is illegal.

Sorry, I don't understand, but how does fakeAPN drain your battery?, as far I can understand it does the same thing as manually changing your APN.. and I don't see that it runs in the background using ps -e in the terminal..

What am I missing here?
