@ yewjin

did you jailbreak your iPhone to enable VOIP services over the 3G network?

yes I did. Why?

i suspect (mind you suspect) that your extra data comes from there.

VOIP services are never never never never never meant to work over the 3G network. hence by jailbreaking it, you are already bypassing the system and it is no surprise that your usage didn't cloak on the iPhone's counter.

Thank you but like I mentioned in my first post I have 2 iPhones with both iValue plans from Maxis.

I used a lot of Skype using 3G with the iPhone that did not exceed the data plan. However the other iPhone which did exceed by 160MB rarely use any voip - however I noticed that we use alot of FRING on it. Could FRING have not clock in the datas used?
*
if you are using the VOIP service via fring, the consequences are the same.

once maxis has determined a course of action, for your case, i highly recommend that you remove the term "scam" from this thread's title.

it is extremely misleading and doesn't hold any water to a certain extend.

from my years of using different network providers (both local and abroad), calling the respective customer service is only useful and effective to a certain extend.

i will give my own personal take in regards to this. if you are calling to make simple inquiries in regards to call plans, latest offers et cetera, calling them up is sufficient. having said that, anything more complicated and if it remains unresolved, it is best to head to the main (observe this term) branch.

in this case, yes you may see a lot of maxis branches, but they are not operated by maxis. they are merely agents with mandate handed out by maxis. hence, it makes more sense to go to the flagship store in klcc. patronise the store during office hours when a manager in charge is more likely to be present. only a personnel with authority has the level to escalate your concerns to the correct channel.

i'm not sure how maxis works, but major network providers around the world, typically subcontract their customer service to a (if not a few) company which specialises in providing these telephone supports. whilst this idea sounds fool proof as it benefits both parties economically, but it also poses some distinct flaws. since these customer service providers are third parties and not directly linked to the network, there are some issues which can prove to be sticky and complicated.

furthermore these consultants are usually part timers and being inexperienced, they can only convey to you what is stipulated on their userguide in front of them. no one can anticipate out of the ordinary, and therefore solutions to that problem may not be embedded in their userguide. of course a good trick (as mentioned above), is to call a few times until you encounter someone more experienced or more ethically responsible to find out or escalate the issue for you.

however when you are paid like crap, and expect to keep your cool with immature and inconsiderate customers yelling profanities at you the entire day, it is not difficult to put yourself in their shoes.

i know this fact for sure, because my ex girlfriend used to work for this so-called third party provider on behalf of vodafone uk. my current provider in australia is virgin (or optus) and their customer service is based in philippines FYI.

i really really really have no idea on how you guys cannot ultilise 3GB on the iPhone. in a place like australia, where there is no such thing as unlimited internet bandwidth, i haven't seen anyone in the local forum complaining about insufficiency.

personally, i'm subscribed to the 320MB bundle (and my iPhone isn't jailbroken, hence i cannot do any VOIP or tethering) and i'm finding extreme difficulties to finish my allowance.

interestingly, i patronise forums (and even moderate one), read news, e-mails corresponding, IM chatting, download podcasts (thrice or more a week) on a daily basis without bursting my limit. not wanting to put this to waste (yes i'm chinese and hence the kiasu gene is embedded deep inside me), i refrain myself from using the university network as they charge me for using it (yes internet is indeed serious business here)

I think you might have gotten yourself confused with bryanyeo87

Anyhow , I do hope someone comes up with an application to kill data connection

even IF someone did, it wouldn't pass through apple's approval before it can be released to the public

if i'm not mistaken (as been told by many customer service consultants), those records are typically 1-3 days late.

only those subscribed to prepaid services will obtain real time results (for very obvious reasons of course)

hey guys, why dont u all monitor your data usage at setting => general => usage

from there you are able to find out how much data been used for both sent and received. to be more accurate, reset the stats each month.

if maxis claimed that u use more than certain amount, you can argue with them base on the stats.
*
it is your word against theirs. if that was indeed arguable, this thread wouldn't have expanded until 6 pages long.

DO They care?? Afraid that's what they wanted... users exceed usage  sad.gif

wondering, how hard to build a system for us to monitor and check real time on DATA usage?
*
the system is already there (as seen in the prepaid category, where credit is being depleted in real time).

but as mentioned, which network provider will actually do that? just practice some self restrain and you will be alright (i know i did)

if i call maxis n ask them 2 cancel all my data connections like EDGE, GPRS etc. will my international roaming be affected??...i only need the iphone 2 make n receive calls, SMS n wifi...cheers
*
unlikely.

i'm only basing this on the fact that my previous blackberry pearl, is able to roam, but wasn't connected to the net.

@ davidmak

legally speaking, it is always good to have disclaimers you see (that is why networks stipulate that it may take up to 2 working days for any charges to appear on the bill)

it is dead on accurate and it turns out vice versa, you can buat a lot of kecoh!

besides, isn't great if the network continues to "mislead" you in an attempt to lure you to exceed your allowance? a great business strategy!

Hi all,

I have recently changed my Maxis package to include unlimited data and I've been unable to reconnect to the Internet. Previously, I followed the instructions listed here:

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/868281

to disable the APN settings. Could someone tell me how to enable my 3G again? Thanks.
*
try to "reset network settings"

i have no idea idea then.

perhaps you can make sure that the actual 3G network on that SIM card is working, on another 3G phone.

if that fails, other than restoring (and set up as a new phone), i cannot figure anything else

im wondering, if im on 3g, how much beejive or im app will sent received data? does it gonna cost like 10mb for 1hour of usage?
*
contrary to many believes, IMs and e-mails take a very low chunk of your data allowance.

i was able to survive on blackberry's 8MB plan a month (without exceeding it) if i adhere religiously to IMs and e-mails

hence definitely not 10MB/hour; that's ludicrous

hi, thanks for the reply.
but in my bill statement, the gprs usage is also being charged separately?
does anybody know what are attracting the 3g charges?
thx alot
*
3G is just a denomination of speed.

celcom probably just clumped the entire internet usage (2G, 2.5G, 3G, HSDPA) to 3G.

at the end of the day, you are being charged based on your usage (nothing to do with your speed)

hence, it doesn't make difference if you have used 1MB on gprs or 1MB on 3G

Added on November 7, 2009, 5:35 pmAFAIK, maxis operates this manner as well.

Thanks tinkerbel. Mind to clarify what cause jailbroken phone data statistics to be inaccurate? I have fakeAPN on all the time unless when I want to connect. I also disable ads using the hosts file already.. thanks
*
for starters, jailbreaking is not even endorsed by apple and also deemed illegal by them?
