I think multitask OS have been in existence for very long time now

Almost any OS can handle what you have mentioned there. Since you asked this question in Mac thread the answer might be bias. Mac do have Microsoft Office and for student edition it starts with 5xx. So far I only spend like 200 for vmware I think and apart from that all are freeware. I would say that almost everything that can run Windows will run Mac as well (perhaps programs like Autocad I think etc as someone told me that while I was persuading her to get Mac)
Programming is easy in mac since mostly built in. Know what osx kernel are derived from?
Please don't start with all the pirated stuff discussion here smile.gif

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a Mac that's suitable for SD (480p), maybe HD video editing. I'm only 14, I don't need a high end mac that can do anything, just a cheap one (< RM4000).

I'm going to be recording with this : Sony Handycam DCR-SR47E

Referring to the stickied price list in this forum, these are the ones i'm eye-ing, but I just can't tell which one is best for video editing

- Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz/4GB RAM/320GB HDD = RM 2,899
- iMac 21.5" Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz/nVidia GF 9400 = RM 4,299
- MacBook Pro 13.3" Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz = RM 3,899
- MacBook 13.3" Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz = RM 3,599

Since I'm only a starter, like I said earlier, no need too high end. Do you guys think a Macbook is ok enough? Because I already have a PC for any other things like gaming or watching videos, it's just that this computer is a very old model and parts to upgrade it are very hard to find and expensive since they're rare. Also heard that Macs run much more smoother than PCs .If I get one, it will solely be for video editing.

The iMac looks like the most suitable one, but it's really expensive and the chances of my dad agreeing to buy it for me are already 10% even for the Mac Mini. The reason why I made this topic is to refer in the future.

I'll keep this short and simple, don't want a TL;DR thread! Apple veterans please help me tongue.gif

Edit : oops! Just saw the Mac Purchase Guide thread stickied .. sorry if I made an unnecessary thread :/

imac is always the best choice for editing not only video, also sound editing or producing. Macbook pro are the 2nd choice of all for mobile work station.

@terence8

i also have the same wonder as bruncit..i planning to get a new laptop and macbook is 1 of my choice, other than that i also consider dell..but well i wan i multi task lappie for web browsing, video music and some coll stuff. my main priority is around 13-14 inch light and also long battery life because i already have a desktop and a gaming 17 inch vaio laptop. so do u think macbook is a good choice? but i heard that u will need to spend a lot on the software? can't mac use pirated stuff? and most of the software and programs that can be use in mac? like c programming? words ? excel and power point..?

I think better we better not talk about piracy stuff here..

For me I have been through your state now considering which one to buy. I was considering MBP 15" and also Dell XPS16 but at last i chose MBP.

Since you said you want a multi tasking laptop, any laptop can multitask but based on your needs, MBP suits your needs.. If you still want to use all thos windows programs, try using bootcamp to dual boot your MBP with a windows OS in it... Then you can use both OS in the same laptop.

MBP is a recommended laptop =)

- compared to windows, u get to spend less on software. a lottt of stuff is built-in OSX smile.gif plus, no need to pay for antivirus, ystem maintenance programs, etc
- yes can use pirated stuff. but we shud not discuss about this here. basically if u know alternative software acquirement in windows, it's the same for OSX
- c programming works on mac, install Xcode that comes with the included dvd (it's not installed by default). words, excel n powerpoint got mac version too (by microsoft), but u can also use apple's own office suite called iWork which includes Pages, Keynote (really good!) and Numbers.
- about softwares in general, most of the time there are equivalent softwares for macs. Adobe's programs got both versions...windows n mac. msn, yahoo msgr, firefox, VLC, utorrent..most well-known programs normally got mac version lah. if dun have, got similar/better alternatives, like Handbrake (dvd rip), Toast (burn dvds n ISO), etc.

maybe u shud give the macbook a try. why not just opt for the 13" macbook pro? small price difference only hehe

iMac is ur best choice. of course u're limited to money la...if cannot get imac, have to make do with mac mini lor :S dun forget to survey n add the price for keyboard, mouse, monitor and speaker though. it only makes sense if u buy cheap ones....if u buy expensive keyboard+mouse+monitor+speaker, might as well get an imac in the 1st place

if I get a mac mini, I already have everything prepared (i'm using another desktop now but like I said it's too slow to do video editing and the upgrades are expensive). The thing I most concerned about is lag when I'm editing .

The iMac looks very promising, even the cheapest one. 3.06ghz w/ the same graphics card i'm using now but the problem is that it's thrice the price of my current desktop >_>

If you couldnt afford the iMac and also thinks that the mac mini doesnt really perform, why not going generic PC with better graphic cards etc... Upgrade your current one with better GC and maybe you could also use hackintosh if you wanna use mac os x... Just an opinion.. as with the budget you could upgrade your PC with better specs =)..

So if I were to upgrade my current pc, what are the core parts (hardware) that I need to upgrade?

Processor?
Graphics card?
RAM?

I just wanna make sure that when I edit it won't lag .. when it lags I get very frustrated

These are my current stats

btw, I like your desktop processor and gfx card!

Get 2x4GB RAM and a new Graphics Processor. The 9400 GT is pretty abysmal for gaming and video editing. Check the PC hardware Forum for suggested GPUs.

Please direct your questions to the hackintosh thread. This isnt the hackintosh thread.

And I'm assuming you have done 0 research on your part to see if your PC is hackintoshable. In which I should direct you to google first, before you even post.

lol. okay if u plan to upgrade ur PC, 1st thing u shud do is get rid of windows vista. go for windows 7

ur RAM is 1x1gb and 1x2gb or what? if u wanna run 4gb, better use 2x2gb. dual channel. and before u upgrade ur GPU, get a fast CPU 1st. fast GPU but slow CPU no use.

juz make sure the components will work for hackintosh. easy route, get mac mini. not that bad laaa

Mods are strict in Apple Byte because it's a post count section. We were asked to be vigilant with people posting here and use the report button if necessary. To avoid the section turning into a mess, please try and understand.

Why are you asking PC upgrade questions in Apple Byte?

Though some of us might be PC experts here, mac users generally do not upgrade anything on their macs. You'll have better luck in the PC section.
