Im on a jailbroken iphone now. Lets says the software 3.0 is released and i wanted to upgrade to it.. i just update the firmware via iTunes straightly can?

and another question is.. if im on software 3.0 still can be jailbreak?
*
ok, as usual i start with my "not to offense you", but if you jailbreak your phone you should know that jailbreak are made by dev team. So until they compile the OS3 version of jailbreak, no, you cannot JB the phone YET.

Yes you can update the firmware from itunes. Just plug in phone and click check for updates.

Do you even care to read? Or you just want to be spoon feed at all times?

Officially unlocked phones can update without worries cause Apple supports it so your phone will remain unlocked after update or restore. If you're phone is an officially unlocked phones and you jailbreak it, after the update you will loose all of your jailbreak contents and apps.

If you have a locked unit, after the update or restore it will remain locked.

So far no words from the Dev team yet, so just wait for them to release a new software then go for it. You can have it unlocked or jailbreak it if you have a locked unit. In the meantime stay with your current firmware first. Read here after this:

Thanks guys for the explanation. I could not have said it better. Nor to I have the patience anymore to entertain questions like these.

To the rest, please keep on topic. If you wanna post queries, go right ahead but post them at the right thread. I'd like if I can to keep this thread concisely on the thread title topics only. Thank you.

Looking at your signature stringfellow, have anyone mention that in OS 3.0 when you tap on the blue dot that shows your current location and it will also show the exact accurate address of your location.

hmmm... i know for the current firmware, i just need to drop a pin on the blue dot and by tapping one more time, a full length address will then appear.

laugh.gif if you meant "Newport Beach" on my sig, that's a very generalized area of where my place is at. If you meant the lat/long on my profile, I've disinclined to post the exact location of by place too. The Hendersons are probably wondering why their home is pinpointed on the Google Maps and inquired by strangers. tongue.gif

Also this just in. Maxis Team Kiwi just met with Apple last Monday, and judging from previous negotiations, it took 3 weeks before Maxis comes up with their pricing. So we are probably looking at 25/26th June for them to announce the pricing. Which brings me to my next dilemma: Netherlands T-Mobile? Belgium Mobistar? Australian 3GS? Or wait for Maxis' still indefinite "July '09" launch date? rclxub.gif

Just wondering, is there anyone here already install and test OS 3.0GM. I need some feedback to compare on how well the tethering work in Malaysia. Seem a bit complicated to work out the tethering over here. sigh

It is a bit unwise to do that when the official release is close. If it is that enticing, perhaps you could lead the way and install them yourself and tell us how it works? IIANM, tethering requires the Pre-Released 8.1 version of iTunes as well as the .icpp file for carrier information. I may be wrong on this, but I distinctly remember reading about it.

On a totally unrelated note,

Yup. the provider files are the problem. Found out how to tweak it for Optus but lot of ppl done it say it might intefere with the MMS setting. Did not proceed lol. Guess taking your advice since the release date is sooo near. I so need to do something else before i bricked my iphone.

Yes, it is demonstrated on AT&T's case where they have a build of OS v3.0 and then the proper carrier files tethering will work.

as i expected, that's why when some of us when they update to the OS3 GM they cant use the tethering and mms, it is because carrier setting will be need to enable all of those. and since OS3 will come out next week. those from maxis will surely get the setting from maxis but how about other telco,
if there is no carrier setting provide for them, it means that they can't use tethering and mms? hmm.gif

You brought up a very good point there. Looks like it. Remember when Apple talked about MMS and Tethering in its WWDC 2009 few days ago. Tethering would depend on the 'blessings' of the telco. So that 'blessing' should be coming in the form of a carrier update. I believe that carrier setting file will have information like the user name, password, APN, server details, etc. That can be easily solved IF the jailbreakers are able to patch in their own carrier setting file.

OR

Maybe there will be provisions in the settings that allow generic telco settings to be input. Maybe?

There are 2 things at work here.

A. The iPhone 3 OS GM activates on any iPhone as long as it is a legit iPhone.  (Not SIM unlocked and working on Tmobile in the US or Vodafone in the UK for example).  If you are using your iPhone on AT&T in the US, it unlocks without issue.  When you go to iPhone 3 you lose your abiity to Jailbreak (for the moment).  More information on this here.

B. The first iTunes 8.2 Pre-release (not the second) allows you to upload carrier .ipcc files directly to your iPhone which enables tethering AND puts your carrier settings on the iPhone.  This was a huge mistake (or was it?...hmm) from Apple because with this version of iTunes you can turn any iPhone into a tether iPhone without permission from the carrier.

This works.  It has been tried a number of times on a few different iPhones.  Here's the easiest way to do this:

1. You probably already have iTunes 8.2 final on your machine.  No problem.  Update your iPhone to 3 GM like so.
2. Now you have to download the 8.2 pre-release 1. We can't tell you how to do this but we're sure you'll get some help in the comment threads. You'll also need to get the carrier settings file from this application (UPDATE: Commenters are saying this one works better for AT&T)..  Most international carriers are supported.
Once you have iTunes pre-release1 , you'll need to completely uninstall iTunes 8.2 before installing the pre-release.
3. Completely Uninstall iTunes 8.2 Final by:
A. Trashing the iTunes.app application from your applications folder
B. Kill the iTunes Helper process in Activity Monitor.app
C. Go into your ~/Library folder and delete all of your iTunes plists and folders.  Alternatively, you can just create a new user account on your Mac and install it from there.
D. Empty trash
4. Install iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release.  Plug in your iPhone 3.0 and go to iTunes, go to the Summary page
5. Option-Click on Restore and browse to the AT&T.ipcc file you extracted from the iPhoneTether.app before (or here from AT&T).

user posted image

6. Click open and you should only have to wait a few seconds while you see this:

user posted image

7. Once that is complete, go to your iPhone/Settings/General/Network and you should see a new option about 1/2 way down called "Internet Tethering".  Click "on".  Instructions will be below.
8. Once enabled, your Mac should pop up a notification:

user posted image

That's it.  You should be tethering, free of (additional) charge on your unlimited iPhone plan.  As far as we can tell, so long as you don't update your iPhone or iTunes, you should be able to continue.

By the way, AT&T doesn't allow apps like Sling because it considers the iPhone a computer and it falls under those terms of service - which is already a tethering plan.  If that is the case, then there shouldn't be additional charge for using your unlimited plan with a computer.

em , so basically who have update into 3.0 GM will be wasted because maxis carrier setting still not available "yet" for tethering and MMS i think..

and also i hope maxis will enable tethering when official 3.0 comes out..

You can use iphone configuration utility v1.1 and edit the mobileconfig file to enable MMS and tethering.

Or wait till the official FW3.0 release and stop having headache on how to get tethering to work on 3.0GM.

oh, if that the case, those who use other than maxis will need to configurate thier mobileconfig in order to enable mms and tethering since apple only will release for maxis here is malaysia.

em 4 days to go and i will update it as soon as its gonna release.
