How to buy contract-less iPhone 3G/3G[S] for USD499/599/699 on Apple.com

Someone found a way to do just that on the US online Apple Store page. Apple would probably close that loophole down, but that price point would probably give insights on how much the new iPhones will be priced, tier-wise.

iPhone 3G 8GB ($499): MB046LL/A
iPhone 3GS 16GB Black ($599): MB715LL/A
iPhone 3GS 16GB White ($599): MB716LL/A
iPhone 3GS 32GB Black ($699): MB717LL/A
iPhone 3GS 32GB White ($699): MB718LL/A

Converted to RM@ USD1 = RM3.7, AND remember to add 30% for tax/Apple tax/Malaysian-stupid-crappy-kastam-pun-mau-makan-tax:-

iPhone 3G 8GB ($499): MB046LL/A = RM2,400
iPhone 3GS 16GB Black ($599): MB715LL/A = RM2,880
iPhone 3GS 16GB White ($599): MB716LL/A = RM2,880
iPhone 3GS 32GB Black ($699): MB717LL/A = RM3,360
iPhone 3GS 32GB White ($699): MB718LL/A = RM3,360

This could probably the "buy outright" price from Maxis, but will definitely be subsidized cheaper for clients with 12/24 months contracts.

to tell you the truth, it depends on the person it self, if he/she willing to spend money to get the iphone then it will, its true that the phone is expensive because of the technology inside it, and people will buy it eventhough its so expensive. sweat.gif thumbup.gif

If you look at maxis pricing for the phone package, 16GB is priced at RM2960 and RM2540 for the 8GB, how can the new phone be less than that?

What string did is a direct conversion from apple US price. It's just to be a guideline on the pricing. It can be that price, lower or higher than that. So it goes back to "need" or "want" to justify your purchase of that phone.

For me it's more to both "need" and "want". Hahahahahaha

Could I say in response to your statement that the price of a luxury car, say, a Merc, is like buying a bungalow, perhaps even 2, so is it really worth paying such sums for a car? You tell me.

That's direct conversion PLUS 30%. With that figure, it gives a fairly accurate estimate of the price without contract.

good one, mate.

the price quoted by maxis, even before the 3G S launch was already at "8GB is going for RM 2540, whilst the 16GB goes for RM2960 ".

hence how on blinking earth, could be "max price for iphone3GS be RM2500"?

anyway kudos to Valentineday for being so wishful (and hopeful). this spirit is indeed required to keep humanity faith alive! tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Yeah, 3K for a phone! There are other more robust options like those HTC, etc. At least you get a 'fully functional phone'. Anyway the only time I see myself spending RM3000+ would be the day Palm Pre is launching. Hehehe!

By the way, the reason I got myself an iPhone THIS LATE is because of the Maxis offer. Come to think of it, a phone around RM1500~2000 is ideal and just nice. RM3000, you better think twice and hard. biggrin.gif

-------

Ooh by the way, I got an SMS from Maxis saying that the new iPhone OS v3.0 will be shipped to every iValue subscriber in the form of a CD. Official launching date is 18 June 2009. CD may either arrive before, on time or later than that.

That RM3,000+ price is the price of the iPhone without subsidization. Your "Maxis Offer" iPhone would definitely inflate to its original price without tying a contract to it.

Watch Maxis play around with the pricetag once they pegged you with a 12/24 months contract.

Then again, like I said before, people will say anything when they already made up their mind to justify their purchase/or refusal or purchase. Those who had already made their mind getting one have their own justification to suit theirs as well.

And don't get me started on the Windows Mobile offerings. The spillover effect from the "robustness" (read: hit reset button once a day) of WM brought the crowd that wants things that just work over to the iPhone platform.

So please, let's wait for the actual pricing to come out and pipe down on the price speculations. I know I did not help when I posted those tiered price points, but I just wanted to get the folks here ready with the expected price range.

My options are even crazier: T-Mobile Netherlands at EU699, Mobistar Belgium at EU619, or wait for Maxis's own announcement. Only Mobistar Belgium looks promising with its no-locked-phones policy there. I could take a flight down to Rome, and find TIM's or Vodafone's 3G[S], but with my short stay in Amsterdam, that is looking more impossible than ever.

Let's wait, shall we? Before we suppose and conclude things that aren't concrete. Myself included.

3K is really expensive. In Aussie they speculate the price will be around AUD850 outright ~ RM2300. And the current iphone 3g 16gig price reduce a lot on ebay, which last i checked around AUD650-AUD700~RM1900-RM2000 for unlocked BNIB. Might wanna grab it tho before i go back to Malaysia next month

Just wondering odes MAXIS support the full capability of iphone? (7.2 Mbps) as i heard some of the carrier do not support it.

can la.

very mint condition (without exaggeration) second hand units.

even before the release of 3G S, i have seen typically on ebay.com.au, unlocked ones they go for about AUD500 (RM1400-ish) with its original packaging, warranty et cetera.

now the major question here is, are you alright with used products? some people are pretty peculiar as in everything they touch must be brand new.

Why again, would you want to wait for the CD for the firmware upgrade, when you can just plug it into iTunes and do it from there? rclxub.gif

It's not like it is a one-off firmware upgrade and that's it. Apple may even introduce 3.01 a week or two after 3.0 comes out for minor bug-fixing. You end up having to download it again, through iTunes.

Thats the thing, in Aussie, you need to take out the iphone first to legally unlock so that they can retrieve the IMEI. I dont mind as long it is opened for unlocking purposes. I dont know about Malaysia, but it is really easy to get Iphone replaced here even you have minor problem such as stiff mute button. I already have white 16 gig Iphone and might find any minor defect so that i can get a new 3GS lol. Read this story here and you'll know what im talking about.

yeah i read about that.

but his story could be fabricated and i have some qualms about it.

and nice try about the underlined statement. apple has loads of refurbished iPhone 3Gs waiting at their disposal and no way they will upgrade to a brand new model.

Added on June 12, 2009, 5:41 pmand i'm scratching my head off, contemplating to opt for the 12 or 24 months contract.

are you planning to get this 3G S?

Lol. I don't know about the smashing parts, but it is actually easy to get a new replacement for Iphone here as one of my mate had to replace his Iphone(not minor problem) and he got it on the spot. About the exchange policy, hopefully it is not true. I still remember when Apple first introduced the aluminium Imac (3 months after the introduction), my old imac died (logic board problem or something) i got traded with a new aluminium one since it is still under warranty (Applecare FTW). It really surprised me tho, but yeah hoping the same case with iphone. finger crossed.

Anyway, I just downloaded the Beta version of 0s 3.0. Might post something about it tonight. Seem cool tho
