something interesting..
Perhaps the most voyeuristic thing about football is watching a seasoned professional crumble in front of an expectant crowd. Football is about spectacle and a penalty miss makes for one of the most memorable spectacles of all! Sport.co.uk runs through the most unforgettable penalty misses.
Gareth Southgate: England vs Germany EURO 1996 Semi Final
Southgate had been one of England’s most consistent performers throughout the tournament yet many eyebrows were raised when the courageous Villa man stepped up to take England’s decisive 6th penalty. The rest, as they say, is history. To see poor Gareth’s moment to forget click
here.
Roberto Baggio: Brazil vs Italy World Cup Final 1994
Roberto Baggio, affectionately known as Il Divin Codino (the Divine Ponytail) had been one of the tournament’s superb players scoring 5 goals in the knockout stages alone. Few doubted him to score Italy’s fifth penalty against Brazil, yet like Diana Ross’s effort at the opening ceremony, Baggio missed the target altogether. Although both Baresi and Massaro also missed, it is Baggio’s effort that is most vividly remembered.

Stuart Pearce: England vs Germany World Cup Semi Final 1990
Stuart ‘Psycho’ Pearce was one of the fiercest, most competitive individuals to ever don the Three Lions. He also had a ferocious left peg and therefore appeared to be the perfect choice to step up and hammer home a penalty. With gritted teeth and to Pavarotti’s memorable Nessun Dorma, Pearce drilled England’s fourth penalty directly at the keeper’s feet. See poor Pearce’s penalty by following the
link.
Robert Pires: Arsenal vs Man City Premiership 2005
Despite scoring from the spot earlier on in the game, Pires and his French teammate Thierry Henry tried an articulate, let’s be honest, self-indulgent Gallic routine that involved Pires touching the ball for Henry to then nonchalantly bury it past the bemused keeper. If only football was that simple, to see the comic penalty click

Chris Waddle: England vs Germany World Cup Semi Final 1990
What is it with England and penalties? Chris Waddle is unlikely to know seeing as his effort is probably still in orbit. Having watched teammate Stuart Pearce drive one against the keeper’s legs, Waddle needed to score to keep Robson’s England in the shootout. Up he stepped with his cultured left peg and subsequently battered it high wide and not so handsome. See Waddle’s howler
here.
David Beckham: England vs Portugal EURO Quarter Finals 2004
England’s talisman and captain stepped up to help England in their efforts to overcome Scolari’s Portugal in a nail biting shootout. The first spot kick is often the most important hence it’s in this list above Darius Vassell’s equally poor effort in the same match. The clip is a worth a watch if only for Beckham’s filthy look at the penalty spot after the ball disappears into row Z. See the clip at the following
link.
Martin Palermo: Argentina vs Columbia Cop America 1999
The tall Argentine merited inclusion because he had the ‘misfortune’ of missing 3 penalties in 1 game alone. None of them are particularly memorable, but if it’s brave to step up having missed 1 then surely its plain madness to step up again having already missed 2? Palermo, like so many before him, had been heralded as the next saviour of Argentine football, unfortunately he never really recovered from this recurring nightmare; relive it at the following
link.
William: Botafogo vs Fluminese Sulamericana 2006
Another Brazilian with only one name, yet this one appears to lack the natural flair of either Pele or Garrincha. The little known Brazilian bravely stepped up in this penalty shootout, and then proceeded to barely kick the ball beyond the penalty spot. We are unsure who he is, but unlike Waddle or Beckham, at least he worked the goalkeeper. See his tame effort
here.
Ronaldo: Barcelona vs Manchester United Champions League Semi Final 1st Leg 2008
The young Portuguese was the inform player in World football and all the talk prior to the match had been about him and Messi. Within minutes of the game kicking off United were handed a dubious penalty, and up stepped Ronaldo with a chance to give his side a priceless away goal. Instead, Ronaldo proceeded to blaze the ball wide over the top right hand corner. See the recently crowned Ballon D’Or winner’s miss
here.
John Terry: Chelsea vs Manchester United Champions League Final 2008
It just had to be John Terry didn’t it? England and Chelsea captain, one club man and fans favourite stepped up knowing that if he could find a way passed Van der Sar his beloved Chelsea would be European Champions for the first time in the club’s history. He inevitably missed, and not even the thunderous Moscow skies could hide poor Terry’s tears. Watch the humiliation unfold at the following
link.
