if just specific model not found and wasted 1 CD is fine
if get that error and brick the HDD then die
the forummers in Seagate forum damaged the HDD (need to reboot few times to get it boot up)

alright, some quick reading led me to believe that this firmware update is NOT applicable to OEM drives

Many of you who have "crashes" with the firmware updater are probably like me.  If you have a 1TB drive, you probably have part number 9BX158-303 (or something like that) which is DIFFERENT than the 9BX158-300 that the firmware updater is expecting.

If you open up your PC and look at the drive, on the label there will be a "P/N" field that needs to match "9BX158-300".  If it doesn't, at least for now, the firmware updater won't do it.

What this means, I'm not sure, because there sure seems to be a lot of us with "-303" drives that need some sort of fix.

When I updated it, no data was lost (I have already backed up my data). Rebooted after the failure and the drive is still there, with the contents intact.

Now waiting for the Seagate 320GB firmware to be available. Does anyone know if Seagate 320GB with SD22 firmware is affected? The Seagate link gives me a blank page for that.

Wow, just saw this thread, seems serious. I owned 4 HDD, all also Seagate. I trust them for many years. biggrin.gif

So far no problem, I think need backup more frequent now. Oops, where to Backup ? All also Seagate sweat.gif

Does it affect those model number ending with "NS" ? eg. ST3500630NS , ST3750640NS icon_question.gif

Thanks.
