All flights limit your hand luggage to 7kg. They can't weigh anything in a plastic bag though. So if you're overweight, bring some plastic bags and put the stuff in.
*
erm last i looked MH limited their hand luggage to 5kgs. the rest are all 7kgs i think

any students travelling overseas with MAS are automatically given 30kg provided you book the correct type of ticket. Remember to inform your travel agent
*
What is this "correct type" of ticket? I always thought there is only 1st class, Business Class and Economy Class. Is there such thing as Student Class to qualify for 30-kg?

what he meant by "correct type" of ticket is a student ticket which is basically just an economy class ticket but has more luggage allowance

I do not know such student ticket even exist. I have a student friend who bought MAS ticket and he has to write letter to MAS HQ to seek increased luggage allowance. Another has to resort to begging the check in counter to carry 30-kg. Hence my asking, what "correct ticket"?

Whereas if buying ticket from MSL, 30-kg is automatically given to every student on every airline. You only have to prove you are a student by qualifying for a RM20 international student card. RM20 is nothing when I found out airline charges RM175 per kg for excess luggage to UK.

For Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines, when (note present tense) booking your ticket to an overseas destination, if you can show proof of enrollment at an overseas educational institution, they will print 30k on your ticket for baggage allowance.

At least, that was what they did in the old days. With MAS restructuring (which the only change I can see is horrible seat colors), and SIA in a bit of a financial pickle, they may no longer honor the perks of civlised air travel.

And seriously, do we need to spoon feed people to the point of putting luggage allowance on the front page? What's wrong with going to the websites of the respective airlines and finding out yourself?

The thing is, I can do research for the major airlines, but what happens if they change? What happens if a new airlines starts plying between SEA and Australia? I cant cover all the airlines.

The thing I really don't understand is why, when faced with a query, the first thing that comes into the mind of people here is "Oh I know. I will ask some people on the internet which may or may not exist for advice which can be horribly wrong". And when its wrong they whine and go "Ah ha! So much for telling to get your facts right when you're wrong!".

Is it so difficult to pick up the phone these days?

I'm quite worried if i couldnt find a job in aus after graduating there because i want to get back the cost of studying over there and live there for the rest of my life. If come back to malaysia to work, I afraid that it may take years to get back the cost and i will earn peanuts.

Can anyone advise me about this? thank you.

every year your university will have job seminars. and a bunch of employers are there. so you bring your resume and have interviews and all that at these conventions. some companies will secure you a place in their company. so once you graduate you can join them straight away.

Added on February 1, 2009, 2:32 pmyou can usually only get these placements at the last year of your study.

SIA always gave me 40kg instead of the 30 provided by MAS. They might have changed their policy this year, but up till the end of last year I'm always allowed 40kg. Anyone who's flying via SIA should confirm with the agency involved.

I agree with NOT putting the luggage allowance on the front page. This is the thread for discussions regarding studying in australia, not about airlines and traveling. Furthermore different airlines have different policies and regulations so it's better for anyone to call the respective airlines rather than post a question for us non-authorised people to answer.
