Do it if you have serious interest in it.

If not, forget it.

Read comments in this thread, and also "Calling all Medical Students" thread. And then there's pagalavan.com. Enjoy your reads, then you can come back and tell us what you think.

reading through pagalavan.com is so damn depressing! The "CaMS" thread is mostly post mbbs student discussing though. Reading through this thread mostly bash about the prospect of this job.

honestly speaking, if its the field for you then go ahead. Don't worry bout the future. If you study hard and be a good doctor, i don't see why you cant get a job.

that is the reality of msian medical scene, in the near future....nobody knows how it will pan out, as msia has never experienced this phenomena of over supply of doctors before.....

but looking at examples from other countries, eg india, the philippines, etc....we have an idea how it's going to be like....

therefore, it makes sense NOT to embark on the course, unless you are very sure that's what you want to do.....

like is said elsewhere, there will always be a place for good, competent, well trained and empathic doctors.....because, msia will need about 4000 new doctors a year once the target ratio of 1:400 population is reached between 2017 and 2020 (date will depend on how many doctors graduate from now).....the excess will have to find something else to do....

natural selection will weed out the weak students/poorly trained doctors from the system....

this is already happening....some housemans drop out as they cannot cope, and went on to do other things, eg, one is doing weight loss programme for a slimming centre.....

I just hope those who are bonded, but do not want to serve/work in the hospital, NOT end up in the Ministry of Health, drawing up policies!! I have a feeling it's also happening!

Even slimming centres will hv to do "stringent" interviews to weed out the incompetent ones!

Is there a choice? Many would prefer office hours minus the stress to get more or less the same pay, minus the hardship allowance.

I am more concerned about the competence of these greenhorns drawing up medical and health policies and guidelines that will affect you and me, and our loved ones!! I am not concerned about their preferred career path, just whether or not they can deliver a good job, based on their "experience"!

Diversifying! LOL!

May not be relevant, but quite a lot of medical students and doctors are rather musical as well. Actually I think it may have been documented somewhere, remember reading it.

I'd assume that the students will be mutually exclusive smile.gif

But hey, why not throw in culinary arts as well - since human nutrition is part of health too biggrin.gif

pretty much. I have quite a lot of med friends who're very talented musicians. Most of them hold diploma in their respective instruments. smile.gif and some of us participate in orchestras too. best of both worlds i suppose? tongue.gif

by the time you graduate, there will be a surplus of doctors, many will not be offered jobs with the gov, and some will not get employed at all.....

HM Liow said that the country will only meet its doctors:population ratio only in Year 2020. Not so pessimistic lah!

he was basing the calculations on 4k doctors a year.....last year it was 6+k.....

and has anyone thought about what happens when we reach the magical 'target'?.....just suddenly close 1/2 the med schools?.....we will only need <3k doctors to keep constant (replace retiring/dead doctors) then......and we are producing 7k.....what happens to the extra thousands with no jobs?....

Could be relaxed and let the training be done by the private sector as what the lawyers and the accountants are doing. Of course, the training allowances paid to these trainee doctors will have to be slashed accordingly and based on their competency and productivity. After the training period, they would have to fend for themselves, whether to open up their own clinics or to seek some employment somewhere.

There have to be some solutions, whether its fair or not fair.

We'll just end up like the Philippines, where doctors have to retrain as nurses. Oh I can't wait to see how the media circus is going to unfold when that happens - parents and students whingeing, finger pointing etc.
