We'll just end up like the Philippines, where doctors have to retrain as nurses. Oh I can't wait to see how the media circus is going to unfold when that happens - parents and students whingeing, finger pointing etc.

Interesting to know what do the "sponsors" think of the investment. Adopt another country?

Depends on who the sponsors are, I suppose. Investment - not quite the word I would use. wink.gif

i think the word 'investment' is appropriate...but in education....the returns of which cannot be measured in dollars and cents....

an added benefit of investment in education, msian style, is the potential returns in terms of opportunity to work/live in another country....

Govt urged to cancel Lincoln College’s licence

B Nantha Kumar
| May 21, 2012

A PKR leader accuses the Health Minister of deliberately ignoring the controversy surrounding the private institution.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader today sought the withdrawal of a licence given to Lincoln University College (LUC) to run an offshore medical programme in the Ukraine.

Malacca PKR vice chairman G Rajendran, referring to a report that LUC was one of four private colleges that were fined last year for breaching a moratorium on nursing courses, said it was “strange” that the government had ignored this bad record when approving the licence last Nov 29.

However, it is not clear whether the breach was discovered before or after Nov 29.

The disclosure of the offence came last March 26 from Deputy Higher Education Minister Hou Kok Chung, who was replying to a question in Parliament. The moratorium, to address the problem of oversupply of nurses, has been in place since July 2010.

Rajendran said the government must withdraw LUC’s licence.

Maldistribution and shortage~ here (India), no mbbs graduate wants to go to rural areas to work, among the reason given:

- interferes with post-graduate plans (here they can take-up PG course immediately after MBBS)
- Govt. salary suckssss
- interfere with family, housing, schooling of children, inadequate infrastructure etc etc...

Problems like this happen:

The Indian Govt. even try to introduce this because of the above mentioned problem:

Bachelor in Rural Medicine and Surgery (BRMS) laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Some nurses in Nayarana hospital trained to be interventionists and after training, able to do what doctors do, barring specialty medicine. Will this work in rural Sabah and Sarawak, where there are no doctors?

that has being the norm all the while, since rural clinics (klinik desa, klinik kesihatan Besar) were set up in the 70's to 80's.....they are run by paramedics called 'Assistant Doctors' (current name), previously known as Medical Assistant, Hospital Assistant, Dressers......and Jururawat Desa (previously Assistant Nurse).....the majority are still run as such....only the major townships have the KKB upgraded to District Hospitals, and qualified doctors posted....

so it's nothing new.....

Some kind of blue ocean strategy that other institution did not pursue. Desperate times need desperate measures.

right on cue, bernama carried an article on this group of paramedics who carried the burden of rural healthcare over the last 50 years since independence.....

http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v6/newsindex.php?id=671988

their days are numbered, as the country is swamped with doctors....i suspect many of these new 'doctors' are not much better than the humble dressers of the old days.... smile.gif

I believe you, especially since a dresser's training as per the bernama article sounds like an intern's.
