By the time you reach age 40,you will start complaining that it's too stressful n you want to quit n retire! You hv plenty of years ahead n opportunities are plenty so don't worry abt that one year or so.

I know you guys are really sick of people asking the same questions over and over (lol), but I would be extremely grateful if anyone could just help shed some light on a few issues. smile.gif

First of all, well I was wondering about the local IMU degree. As in the one where you do all 5 years at IMU. Is this degree recognized worldwide? As in can you actually work in another country like the UK and etc. with an IMU MBBS degree? And well, besides that, can you apply for postgraduate in another country like, again, the UK? For example if I wanted to specialize in ENT or rheumatology or something like that. Would I be able to use my IMU degree to apply for these postgraduate courses?

polo246, as far as i've already read through numerous forum threads *and as far as i've tried to understand them* , since its LOCAL, it's only recognised LOCALly hence can't work in other countries.
correct me if i'm wrong. smile.gif

Right yeah. I figured as much. Thanks for clearing that up for me. But how about postgraduate studies abroad with the IMU degree? Quite impossible right?

1) IMU local degree NOT recognised worldwide, as far as I know only Malaysia, at the moment.
2) You do NOT go back to uni for specialization. You apply to be in the specialty program WHILE working in in the hospital.
Since your degree will not be recognised in "UK and etc" you will not be able to work there, hence you will not be able to do postgraduate courses there.

That is my understanding, and will want to be corrected if my understanding is wrong.

Right yeah. Thanks a lot guys for all your help. I really do appreciate it. So doing the MBBS course there means that your career prospects only exist in Malaysia then I guess? Thanks again podrunner and ABMKA!

imu mbbs is recognised only in msia and sri lanka....

non-recognised degree means one cannot register to work....

there are alternate pathways for registrations, ie exams you can sit for....

post-graduate training means working....therefore, cannot do training in uk etc...

some postgraduate qualifications on the other hand, needs no onshore training, and one can work in msia and sit for the exams.....

basically, if one gets a local msian medical degree, it basically means one will NOT be able to work in other countries without sitting for some sort of qualifying exams...

the only local msian degrees recognised elsewhere are:
um/ukm (spore)
monash sunway (australia/nz)
pmc irish degrees (ireland)
presumably the irish degrees with perdana and allianz will also be recognised in ireland.....

like i said, some postgraduate exams are open exams, and still recognised in msia......

this will be in the medical specialities.....

surgical postgraduate exams are closed to non-uk residents....(mrcs is open, but not recognised by msia, frcs is recognised, but needs uk work/training to be allow to sit).....the last 15 years, there has hardly been any more new frcs surgeons in msia.....almost all new surgeons goes through the local masters pathway.....with it's bottle neck and affirmative action policy.....

Limeuu, do you mind explaining about the possibility of working in Ireland if he/she studied in PMC. I was wondering why most PMC graduates got stuck in Malaysia.

With the number of medical schools in the country, it will be hard to justify giving medical scholarships for overseas. That's the rational thought of course, and here, all too often rationale plays no part in decision-making.

the same reason why although monash sunway degree is recognised in oz, many will not get jobs....and the fact that ireland is part of eu.....making immigration barriers worse....

in addition, not many people want to go work in ireland anyway.....and these degrees are NOT recognised by uk's gmc....so they can't work in uk.....which is the preferred country to work.......

You do NOT go to uni to "study" OBGYN. Is her medical degree recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council? If yes, is she already working in a hospital in Malaysia? I believe she will have to go through housemanship etc. before you can apply to be in the OBGYN program, and IF successful, she WILL DO that in the hospital, NOT a university.
