I've got no experience with the lumix. However, my cousin has the ixus, and I've played with it quite a few times. The pics are reasonably good quality and the vids are awesome (in terms of compacts)

Any specific features u want?: Ultra zoom, manual functions

Hey Guys, need some help here. I'm looking for a new camera by mid January. Generally I'm a newbie at photography and this will be my first digital camera blush.gif So I'm looking forward to some options here. As you can see, both my models that I have surveyed are ultrazoom cameras. I like the versatility of having extra zoom. The size or weight of the camera doesn't really matter.

Does anyone have experience between the two models mentioned? Which one is better? I'm open to every other suggestion and I do not want to restrict my choices to only these 2. I generally do not care for video at all. Is there any promotions going on? Also whats the importance of taking a RAW file? Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50, I read, takes only JPEGs. I am an advanced Photoshop user and have done various postprocessing on JPEG files before but have had no experience with RAW. Thanks

If I'm not mistaken Panasonic LX3 goes for much more than RM1500. And according to this digitalcamerainfo.com the LX3 performs average in comparison to its high price. I've never even touched one before though so wait for more expertise on this biggrin.gif

The 1000D is around RM1.9k now while the D60 should be down to around RM1.7k
Not sure about it though, you've gotta check on that.

1000D is RM2k, street price is RM1.9k. Lucky buyers might even score RM1800-RM1900 range. (lucky me)

Hi,
i'm currently looking for some nice begineer DSLR camera and seem like everyone recommend SONY Alpha A200K/W set... K with Single Lens and W with extra LENs
My budget below 2k la..
i'm newbies to photography...
i able to get SONY alpha A200W set around 1.8k...but still need to buy sling bag ...memory storage?! Any recommended memory storage for A200..?
Any other needed addtional acc ?

You'll need a SDHC card if you plan to shoot continuous shots. If you're not, a normal SD will do.

Sony's range of lenses are smaller, while Canon's lenses have been since 1980s so there'll be a wider range. Sony's a newbie to the DSLR market.

Superzoom? Get a DSLR and a 400mm lens then. doh.gif

Well, if you want a prosumer, try the LX3. Suits your budget perfectly. Best prosumer of the prosumers.

If you want to shoot macro photography a DSLR is highly recommended... but in this case I think you should settle with the IXUS 80. The IS is desirably better and helps a lot.

I think you should settle with the FZ28, or if you can increase your budget, get a LX3.

RAW shots are normally able to be processed by a few applications... I own a DSLR but I haven't played around with RAW yet so I can't really tell you how.

Anyway, RAW files are pictures taken raw (no touchup done on the camera, just the picture which was captured by the sensor) so it's easier to edit and touchup the picture to your liking.

Nikon D80. Canon EOS-450D. These two are direct competitors for this price range. D80's body is cheap, and 450D is a rank up from the 1000D.

If you want you could settle with the 1000D too...

D80 body is around RM2k+-.

450D kit is around RM2.7k. Should be lower in terms of street price.

1000D is RM2k, lower for street price.

40D? It's around RM2k I think (not in shops anymore), while the 50D would be around RM5k for a new set. Depends on which kit you get.

Yeah, I think it's a wise choice to go for a camera with manual functions. Even though not a DSLR, you'd still want manual functions.
A RAW file is basically raw data captured by the image sensor when you press that shutter button, down to every single photon. When you shoot in JPEG, there'd normally be various settings to be determined like sharpness, saturation, etc. This is because if you shoot in JPEG, the camera automatically throws away any data deemed not within the set parameters.
Thus, if you're trying to edit JPEG pictures, it will be harder as you're trying to recover something that is not there. However with RAW, every single bit of data is still intact, thus making post-processing more versatile.
So if you're the lazy type who just wants their photo straight out of the camera, then you could skip RAW, but if you dont mind spending a little more time post-processing your photos (like me smile.gif), then you might want to get a camera which shoots RAW.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately as you know the LX3 does not have the zooming capabilities and the price is still too high for what it has to offer. But thats just me.
Anyone got a second opinion?
