Hi all,

need advise on the following:

Type of camera/lens/accesories : dslr and long range lense for personal hobby
Budget : RM2k to RM4k
Your Location : KL
Preferable brand : Canon
Type of photography u want to do :Landscape/planes taking off
Any specific models in mind? : Canon EOS 450D or 1000D
Any specific features u want? : able to use the lcd monitor as viewfinder (dont really knows the exact phrase for such feature)

Using D40 ( less then 1 year old) with 18-55mm (standard) and 70-200mm (sigma) lenses but thinking of selling or trade-in the D40 for the new dslr. Prefer shifting to Canon but seriously not sure which canon shoud go for.

i think you can get 1000D with reg accessories for bout RM 2k and probably round RM 3k ++ for 450D.

is the 450D comparable to D60 or D80?

Sony also has their own lens lineup. Contrary to what you think that Sony is a newbie to the DSLR market, Sony has actually bought over Konica Minolta, and Sony DSLRs can be fitted with Konica Minolta lenses. This being said, it's good to note that Konica Minolta was already in the SLR market since 1985. And that's also 2 years before Canon introduced its EF mount system.
Along with Canon's EF-S lenses, Sony has it's DT lenses too for digital SLRs.
What I am basing my statements on are pure logic and facts, and from what I've been seeing, you've been rejecting anything that isn't a Canon or a Nikon.
*
So, let's allow you to tell me - are Konica Minolta lenses common in Malaysia?

I'm not 'rejecting' other brands as you say, but purely pointing out the downsides.

Body doesn't matter - the lens matters most. For long range lenses, the cheapest you can get is the 55-250mm EF-S one. Rm1k+- around there. If you want you'll have to increase your budget a bit though - long range zoom lenses are well over rm2k... probably you might be able to hook up a good deal on the 70-200mm's (f4l or f2.8)... but that'd be rare.

If you want a cheap alternative then go for the Tamron 70-300mm Di Macro.

Anyway, for the body, since you've been using a D40 already, you should be able to grasp the tactics so I think you should go for the 450D. If your budget doesn't allow, then get a 1000D. If you can further push your budget, get a 50D.

450D is around RM3k+- for new kit (not sure) and 1000D is RM2k in shops but street price is RM1.8k-RM2k.

450D is in the same category as the D80. D60 is more to the 1000D's category.

Pixelated? Usually pictures won't get pixelated in any circumstance, even if your lens is fully extended. First time hearing someone ask this question - so I guess I'm a bit dumbfounded.

Anyway, that deal.. is around market price. Try searching for camera or photo shops and ask them to offer you a price la.. And ask them to throw in some freebies too.

Dude, the reason why you see pixelated images on your digital camera when you zoom is because that is the camera's digital zoom. Normal digital cameras have two types of zoom. Optical and digital. Optical zoom is where the lens will change its focal length to become longer or shorter. Digital zoom is where the camera will attempt to "fake" optical zoom by using complex algorithms to manipulate the pixels.
DSLRs do not have the digital zoom capability. This is because to use digital zoom, some sensor must actually be "looking" at the image in order to apply the complex algorithms to digitally magnify the image. When viewing into the viewfinder in a DSLR, you're actually looking at reflected light that is passing through the lens.

Now you're trying to change the subject.
Do you even try to point out each brands' pros and cons. It seems to me that whenever people ask, your answer will be either a Canon or a Nikon or both. And surprisingly nothing is mentioned about the other brands.
I was pointing out that Sony does have an impressive lens lineup. And you not seeing Konica Minolta or Sony lenses being sold doesn't mean that it isn't common in Malaysia. It just means that you do not know where to look for it yet.

Under 1k? Fairly impossible.

If you ask me - I think you can settle with two cheap setups: a 1000D with EF 50mm f/1.8 (for shooting macro, landscape, the kit lens will help you do portrait and the holiday taking ones) or

Sony a200 with a 50mm f/1.8 too. If I'm not wrong though, Sony's 50mm f/1.8 is a bit expensive.

EDIT: Left out another choice - D60 with 50mm f/1.8. Fairly expensive setup though.

Then tell me - where do you look for those lens? See anyone selling it in Garage Sales? Does Fotokem carry it? Does individual photo or camera shops sell it?

If you're mentioning other countries like Singapore, maybe they do have... but we're in Malaysia (don't know about you) so we have limited access to lenses like that.

Go read a few reviews on Sony DSLRs and compare them with Canon or Nikon's reviews. DPreview will help you a lot. When I was choosing my DSLR I had my eyes on the a200 at first because it was impressively cheap, but in the end I settled for the 1000D because of the pros and cons that have outweighed my need to save RM600 and buy the a200.

I'm not trying to leave out Sony - I'm a big Sony fan myself, besides - I'm typing on a Sony Vaio, using a Sony Ericsson, watching TV on a Sony Bravia with a Sony home theater system, and I use Sony car audio systems too. Got a problem?

A300 is RM2k-2.1k, D60 is RM2k, 1000D is RM2k. If you're lucky you might find deals (probably they give you a lot of freebies, or they sell it to you at a dirt cheap price). It depends on how much you surf around and explore shops.

For closeup, you need macro lenses, and the cheapest one is RM300 for Canon, while for Nikon, I'm not sure.

Since you're a beginner and you PREFER Canon or Nikon (just emphasizing, if not I'll get flamed by somebody here), you can choose from the D60, D80 (body) , 1000D or the 450D.

D60 and 1000D is RM2k+-, the 450D is RM3k for the kit, and the D80 is around RM2k for the body.

The extra money (if you buy the D60 or 1000D) can be used to buy a good macro lens, either the EF 50mm f/1.8 or the f/1.4. While if you get the D80 or the 450D you might have to push your budget up a wee bit more.

If you're able to increase it, go for a Canon EOS-40D.. gives you value for price... but it's most probably used and only the body will be sold..
