First things first. The LX-3 isn't a DSLR. So if what you're interested in is something like the LX-3, you're probably looking for a high end compact camera that's packed with tons of features. Or if you WANT something that looks like a DSLR but not so complicated and expensive, you could look into bridge cameras.

About that feature that you wanted. Even the camera that you're using now can produce those kind of shots if you know how to. It doesn't depend on the type of camera used. It only depends on the aperture used when the shot was taken.

hmm...so wht does a DLSR can do, that a high end compact camera cant do? sry..newbie here

Lenses on DSLRs can be interchanged for usage on different occasions. For example one might put on a wide-angle lens for landscape shots, then change it for a telephoto lens for wildlife shots.
This is the ultimate plus side of DSLRs, and also its biggest deterrent for users looking to explore the DSLR world.
While the ability to change lenses for different occasions is good, those lenses don't come along cheap. In fact lenses are the most expensive part of DSLRs. Ask any professional photographer, he will tell you that he spent far more on lenses than on camera bodies.

If you're interested in getting a lot of lenses and looking forward to a wide range of lenses, Nikon and Canon are the two main brands in the market that offer this.
But if you're planning on sticking to only a few lenses, then you could look at DSLRs by Sony, Pentax and Olympus.
So far Sony has the cheapest entry level DSLR, the A200 which you can get brand new for around RM1.5k
Other entry level models include Nikon's D60, Canon's 1000D, Pentax's K200D, Olympus' E-420/520. All of which are located more or less in your price range.
I really cant recommend any specific models to you. It's up to you to test them out and see which one you like more.

The 1000D is around RM1.9k now while the D60 should be down to around RM1.7k
Not sure about it though, you've gotta check on that.

Type of camera/lens/accesories :  any
Budget: under rm500
Your Location:   pj/kl
Preferable brand :  any
Type of photography u want to do : normal
Any specific models in mind? :  any
Any specific features u want? :  uses aa batteries, image stabilisation, preferably uses sd or cf memory card
thanks in advance.

thanks for all your advice and recommendations. i went to sg wang/low yat and found these 2 that met my requirements (under rm500/ uses aa batteries/ has image stabilisation/ sd memory)...
- Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ7
- Canon PowerShot A590 IS

which would you guys choose?
also why was there a BIG difference in prices among the shops (the most expensice being over rm1000, and cheapest for under rm500, with similar bundled extras) ?

Hihi
I am currently looking for compact camera smile.gif
But not sure what the different for camera
Currently my target spot for compact camera is Canon IXUS and Sony Cybershot
Canon Ixus series - eg : 80is / 870is / 970is /980is , Cybershot T-2 / T-77 / T-700 and so on.
Can recommend which camera is nice in quality with reasonable price ? biggrin.gif
And what is different for canon powershot and Ixus series?
Cause seem like Powershot A2000 IS has 10MP, 6X optical zoom and so on but is far cheaper than IXUS 970 is which is 10MP , 5X optical zoom . smile.gif
Not really understand the other specification cause newbie in using camera tongue.gif

I want to buy a COMPACT camera, Nikon used to be my 1st choice in maybe 5 years ago, but now it seems like not much peoples use it.

Is it still as good as before, I owned a Nikon before, it was one of the best compact camera at that time. And I remember Nikon's advertisement about it is very sharp, guess the advertisement was 5 years ago too.

Nikon S600/S610 is in my mind now, but want to gather more information about this camera 1st, anyone using it?

Else I will get Canon Ixus instead.

how about considering Canon 400D , its newer compare to 350D smile.gif i think 2nd hand is selling around RM1400-+
well , are u investing more into ur DSLR or just one time thingy ? if not then Sony will be better .
If u are going to invest more , then consider Canon , cause there are more lens (3rd party) available for canon compare to Sony icon_rolleyes.gif

even the 1550 is going a bit over my budget.
but considering that the cam is still under warranty, i think it's ok.

thanks for the input though. let's just hope this deal goes well.

The 350D has a lower dynamic range compared to more recent models.
I think you'd be better off getting a new A200.

Nonsense. Third party lens manufacturers always make lenses compatible with most mounts (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, etc.)
It is Sony that has a narrower range of lenses compared to Canon or Nikon.
