guys help pls.

i bought something from japan 1st time using DHL
Item = 6000 yen
shipping = 1000 yen

and suddenly the shipment was on hold. never got problem with this when using ems/sal infact there several times my packages almost near rm500
This is what they replied :
Yes your total value of your goods is below than RM 500.00 but the calculation for the tax is base on the CIF ( Cost + Insurance + Freight ) whereas the Freight and Insurance charges is based on the IATA rate from Custom Malaysia .

You may refer to the below calculation :

FOB ( value of goods) : RM 240.00
Freight : RM 346.80 (Based on the IATA rate from Custom Malaysia)
Insurance : RM 2.40 ( 1% from the value of the goods)

Total : RM 589.20

Import duty : 20% from RM 589.20 = RM 117.84
GST (6% from RM 589.20 + RM 117.84 ) = RM 42.42
Processing fees = RM 53.00 ( Standard min rate for any shipment which has been incurred for import duty & GST or GST only according to the total CIF)

Total payable = RM 213.26

anyone know how the calculation/rate?

This is my first time purcashing item above RM500 and I would like to get some insight on the import duties stuff.

I am planning to purchase a hiking backpack that would cost me about RM680 + RM115 shipping.

Just wondering if there would be any tax on this? If so, can I avoid it?

T/C# 9401.30 0000 which carry 6% GST only. As shipment from SG, minimum IATA freight rate is RM83.97.

Take out the packaging. They wont stop you.

If required. Tell the custom you brought it from Msia in the first place.

You dont have a proper invoice showing the CIF value? If you have that pls use it to argue to lower the CIF cost. Dont let Custom get away with using IATA freight rate which is totally nonsense. Unless you are obviously underdeclaring... (DHL form japan only RM40?)

I called in to Custom and Pos Malaysia the other, my hiking bag is made of nylon and since it is above RM500, there will be only 6% GST imposed.

Hope that helps.

Sure thing! Apparently, if made of different materials - was given canvas as an example - then there will be an additional 20% import duty tax. Phew!

I just heard from my friend today that nowadays, instead of giving you the option of picking up the item at kastam yourself and save the RM50 poslaju agent fee, they just simply add the RM50 to the 6% tax and ask you to pick up the package at poslaju office instead Is that true? Anyone got their package detained by kastam within these few days?
