I am using Arch Linux from a years now -it never let me down yet. Highly recommended. Besides the distro choice it should be also desktop environment choice to consider - the same distro on different desktop will be running faster/slower etc.

You chose what you want to install and that make it easier to maintain your system.

as a newbie, I find opensuse 12.1 most Windows Friendly.. Quite intuitive and any queries is easily found on the web
I also tried a few other distros, but I find OpenSuse most polished and bug-free...

Yo, hi all, ive been redirected from CodeMaster section into this section, lets hope I can get some easy direct answer =)
A bit about myself, im a windows programmer for more than 10 years, ive never seriously look into linux. Lately my company plans to implement something that we might look into Raspberry Pi, a business card sized ultra cheap computer for some kind of project. That Pi thingy can not run a windows but it will be more than enough for a lightweight linux.
So here am i. I am in need for some direct answer. Please suggest me few linux distro to look into based on my requirement.
- the distro need to run from an SD card - the distro need to be small, very small, if lesser than 1GB good, if lesser than 1 MB even better, RAM only 256MB available - the purpose of the Raspberry Pi will be running some sort of application, ie a webserver, plus some small sized reporting program. - no monitor, mouse, keyboard, user will be using the system, so no need to have most of the common things, like calculator, browser, notepad, etc. - need to have network, DHCP, speaker, capable of running multiple instance of application. - best if can have mono(some kind of engine that allows dotnet codes or program to be executed)
Currently i have installed debian in a virtualbox, attempting to get the Raspberry Pi or compatible hardware for me to get a head start. Please suggest me what else i can look into, thanks.

Fedora latest release is Fedora 17, code-named Beefy Miracle. Fedora 16 release 6 month ago. If u looking for stable distro, Fedora is not for u.

I choose Lubuntu 12.04.
Reasons: 1. Based on Ubuntu - Ubuntu has commercial support 2. Solutions for Ubuntu will likely work for Lubuntu. So far so good. 3. Lubuntu uses LXDE - It is light. 4. Most stuff "just works" out of the box - e.g. Nautilus, GDebi, IBus etc.
Comments?
ps. Yes, "just works" is a jibe at iFags. LMFAO.
