Yes its loud in my opinion but I wouldn't mind because of all the performance that its giving me and considering I'm using headphone most of the time. I guess it is a thing that you need to live with when you're using a high performance components that generate considerable amount of heat.

Oh I seee, if gaming then I understand.
But let's say..if I quit the game and try to surf net and do some simple word processing, will it generate loud cooling noise also?

Hey guys, been a while since I've posted here. happy.gif

From my experience, the NP8660 runs much quieter (and cooler!) than any laptop I've previously owned. My graphics card rarely ever hits 60 Celsius under full load, hovering around 37 Celsius when idle. My processor never goes above 50 Celsius even under full load. The only issue (for lack of a better word) I have is my 7200 rpm hard drive, which can get reasonably loud. However to answer your question, when surfing or doing simple office tasks, I have never had an issue with noise.

Hi guys, I need ur opinion here.

I am interested in the NP5793 model here with Blue Ray drive somemore and its price tag but I kinda scare of 2 kind of things here.

1) Screen is matte display only instead of glossy despite having a 1900x1200 reso
2) Many review complaint that this is a loud laptop. At least louder than NP8660.

the NP8660 has a dedicated hardware button that puts it into "silent mode". basically turns off the fan without affecting performance

i use this mode when sleeping. laptop gets abit warm when i wake up. but been doing this for 5months now, no probs yet smile.gif

if you decide to leave the fan on, I would say it makes as much noise as a dell

Matte displays looks dull-er, but are viewable in most conditions. (even outside smile.gif )
Macbooks use the glossy display, so you could use that and see which display suits you better. Or just get an external monitor if you're not happy with the one on the NP5793. tongue.gif

sound wise i'm not sure, but the np5793 does have 1 extra fan compared to the np8660

Yea basically its only during gaming period, sorry I didn't mention that.

During idle time or normal use its perfectly quite.

Not sure about the NP5793 though.

Great news by Justin from XoticPC. The GTX 260m will be up for grabs for NP8660 users individually by the start of April. No MOBO replacement needed or whatsoever, just stick it in. Though you do need to flash the laptop's mobo BIOS with the newest one, which link is right below, many thanks to Gophn and theriko ( theriko posted it earlier)

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.p...74&postcount=18

Word of caution, please make sure you flash the EC firmware to its newest version. Flashing your mobo's BIOS may lead to bricking your system if done haphazardly. Get a bootable flash drive to do it. I'm not liable if you brick your system.

Damn... Love how it's the MXM form factor, that's what I call modularity, guess XoticPC will be getting my money soon.

P/S the NP5797 has the option of upgrading to GTX 280m, I think.

USD 200 would be the flat rate, if you place an order from Xoticpc.com.

its USPS (United States Parcel Service), and USD 223 is with tracking. Recommended shipping method as you'll receive it within the week.

Also, upon request, xoticpc now offers discounts if you decide to shorten your warranty period smile.gif they havent replied with exact figures yet, but you could always try asking before buying.

Annnddd ... my little rebate is back too. but its down to a measly 1%.*haih, need to work my way back up* It is much simpler now though, xoticpc will instantly credit the amount from your total rclxms.gif

hmmm...USPS...in their FAQ they recommend using UPS with their Express Shipping though. but i guess that would be really expensive.
To get their quote on shipping...just sign up as member and check out the item to see?

Hi, u interested in NP8662 too.. actually I am interested too but I need to save some money for the next 2 months or so,

but last week, Out of curiousity, I email to enquire about this model but they replied will need to wait till early April to get ur lappy if u order now bcos Clevo has stopped shipping the models to Sager due to a change in graphic cards (GTX260M) for NP8662.

BTW, if u wanna buy.. u wanna buy the matte display (1900X1200) or glossy display (1680X1050)? Which is better?

Yea, the np8660 page now redirects user to the np8662, thank god, that it's possible to upgrade the video card on the Np8660, or else, it would've been a real turn off.

I would go for the glossy display. It makes the display more sharp and clear. That's for me. but some people go for the matte display because of the glare. I really don't mind it...depends on how u angle the display.

I was doing more browsing and came across Sager NP5797....bigger screen and better Gpu... the 280M. I might get that instead...problem is it's heavy! and i travel a lot.

On their spec page....it shows the GT9800 GTX but on their customize and buy page...it's the 280M. I think they are upgrading the GPU for it. the price for my spec would be about USD1900 excluding shipping of USD200.

this would be helpful for MGPU comparison....http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-G.....-List.844.0.html

From it...the 9800GTX and the 280M is a huge leap.

yep, but you wont really see the difference on a 15/17" screen.

for comparison, Dell 24" Monitors use 1920x1200 native reso tongue.gif

I'm going to the UK for holidays soon. Are there any resellers of either Clevo or Sager there?

Added on March 18, 2009, 11:57 amI just received an email reply from xoticpc. I must say...really quick. I sent a query regarding shipping method and cost. This is taken from the reply. And they recommend shipping with UPS.

hi Corad,

I need ur advice here as I am quite keen on model NP8660.

Since your lappy is just a 15.4" but you opted for 1920X1200, would it be too small for text reading and internet browsing? Do you need to zoom everytime you surf net or word processing tasks? Why wouldn't you just go for 1680X1040 initially?
