5800 doesn't comes with a-gps meh? normally phones nowadays come with a-gps in order to shorten the signal locking time... However.. you will being charged for that as it uses GPRS, EDGE or 3G shakehead.gif ... so... part of the users will disable it... and wait longer for the GPS to function  hmm.gif

Thanks for directing me to the appropriate place for info.

I have this to ask for advice....

After disabling the AGPS, when I am at a new location, the GPS will not work and always show the last map...........and not the current location.

So it appears there is no way to use the GPS FREE as the info must be obtained using GPRS to get the location that one is currently in in order to get the route to go home from point A (current location) to A ( say home).

Am I correct to say this or otherwise ?

Hi all..

I am using nokia N78 with Garmin Mobile XT... Sometimes, it really hard to get the GPS signal, waiting for almost an hour, still couldn't get the signal... I already enable A-GPS but the result is still the same...

Yesterday and today, i drive from sg buloh, selangor to bukit jalil, kl around 9am and reached there around 10am.. along the way, i launch garmin application and it says "Searching for satellites" from the beginning until i reached my destination...

During lunch time, when i'm driving, i launch garmin again but the result still the same, could not get sattelites signal... on my way going back home, around 6pm, the result is still the same until i reach bukit jelutong area (shah alam)...

Starting from that area until i reached my house in sg buloh, its really easy to get and lock the GPS signal... I close garmin, then re launch it several times, yeah, within 20 seconds, it already lock the gps signal... this is happen yesterday and today... never try gps for that area before..

is this situation is normal??? shocking.gif

check when u turn on a-gps immediately when u run garmin check your phone whether is it connecting via data. If dont have the gprs or 3g logo connecting means got problem with your phone. Maybe GPRS problem maybe?

I am using 5800 XM cold start maybe 15 mins. Warm start 5-7 mins

with A-gps = 5 sec

OMG..u spent all your money to track via sms & see the plot & also speed shocking.gif

Actualy to track, plot & checking speed and even altitude, you need not use sms. There are few data logging software available such as Nokia sport..., Race chrono & even garmin mxt itself can record. Unless u mean u wanted to trace the location of your car just like those GPS security system hmm.gif

Otherwise, it has been ages & track recording is the basic of mapping & also contributed to the detail GPS maps available Today at malfree & also malsing...It has been my weekend hobby as well to record tracklogs, checking my mountain bike riding speed, plotting the data on the maps, checking altitude, and lastly sending any new roads that I encountered during weekend ride to either one of the mapping communities for updating.

QUOTE(bazet @ Mar 16 2009, 10:55 AM)
actually, If there's no credit left, the system will write into text file..later you upload and see the plot.......

well this project is just a weekend hobby.....just to track my Satria NEO..and clock the speed

Assume all using authorised (original) Nokia accessories, it should be no problem, except the battery may degrade faster. e.g. The battery may die within 1 year instead of 2 years if you do it frequent, especially when you plug-in and plug-out when you stop, goto toilet break, lunch/dinner, make calls, sms, etc.

Previously I used my Nokia phones as GPRS/EDGE/3G modem on my notebook (USB cable) for 10-20 hours daily (overnight download) for 1-2 years. No problem. Always plug in charger, continuous charge.

Heat will be warm using GPS, but not as hot as using 3G/HSDPA Data download.

I tried Nokia Sport from MRR2, then towards Karak. Save the route in N82. Then download into PC. Open up Google Earth. They have a 3D view to replay back the route I drove thumbup.gif and also with the altitude shown.

Since ver 5.00.20, locking satellite is faster a bit. But so far, my N82 unit GMXT never crash before (only very slow sometimes), but I only use in portrait mode. However, if locking satellite is too long (>2 min), what I do is close GMXT. Open Nokia Maps, then open GMXT. Once Nokia Maps locks on, GMXT will lock on. Seems like Nokia Maps lock on faster. I have tried with both A-GPS enabled and disabled. Both same.
