Wth GArmin GMXT - no need 100% free except for the intial purchase of the Garmin MXT SD card

Not sure any nokia using SIRFIII but I doubt so...bcos nowadays lotsa of manufacturer run away from SIRFIII to cheaper option of MTK & Nokia noramally on AGPS..dunno what chipset. SIRF III still the best amateur based GPSr in the market wth superior reception but not so good in battery life compare to MTK.

QUOTE(jhlou @ Oct 14 2008, 02:14 PM)
Can I ask,
- If I have a Symbian OS phone and installed with Garmin software, then I would not have to pay any data charge for GPS realtime direction?
- Are all Nokia phones using A-GPS or specific chipset (eg SIRF-III) for GPS positioning?

U probably want to choose shortest route rather than Highway in Garmin....The problem in Nokia maps is lotsa new area not in the maps..and thus u can't navigate there.

How much u pay on monthly navigation using nokiamaps? Last time I paid RM38 for a mth. hmm.gif

Depending if u willing to pay or u want 100%free...Nokia maps naviagtion is not free...subscription is at RM38/mth ~6mth ago..not sure now.

Using Garmin & Mapking, u need to buy the software initially & thereafter the maps is downloadeable from malsingmaps.com (Garmin + Mapking) or malfreemaps.com (Only Garmin version)

The devices are very subjective...any phone/pda phone with built=in GPS receiver will do OR any Symbian or windows mobiles devices without built-in but no problem pairing wth ext BT GPS receiver.

There are pro & con on each phone & PDA..very difficult to compare...just choose the one up to your budget. I'm using both PDA & Nokia for navigation i.e:

Asus P535 I'm using Garmin Que & Mapking. Garmin Que/GPS proxy for tracking &
Nokia N78 wth Garmin MXT/Nokia maps for navigation.

So it's up to your budget & what u really like...I choose Asus bcos of it's SIRFIII chipset & also the speed 520mhz. & reasoneable at the point of time (Not now-lah), & Nokia N78 bcos it's the cheapest inbuilt GPSR wth WIFIO, 3.5G connection
QUOTE(-Y- @ Nov 6 2008, 08:02 PM)
sorry for not be specific. what i meant was, phone/pda. im thinking htc touch hd. which will available soon. the 3.8" screen is very tempting.. drool.gif

GPS signal is totally free..but the navigation system is not free. U need to buy the navigation software such as Garmin MXT, Mapking before u can enjoy the free GPS signal & also the free maps from the websites in my siggy. biggrin.gif

For Nokia maps (Another navigation system, they even smart...you can download their free maps & even nolia maps is free ! BUT..The navigation function..i.e prompting u nst ture & guide u to a preset destination is not free..U need to subscribe! & the subscribtion rate oledi increase from RM38 to RM42 now (probably due to USD inflated)
QUOTE(shakiraa @ Nov 8 2008, 07:10 PM)

PMed to you oledi but it's good to highlight again the history..Infact abit of sad history doh.gif sad.gif ...Malsingmaps started off wth Adilothman (M'sia) & Aprivate (Singapore), In between, others such as antyong, jmleng, noah, berngps & more joined in & resulted in MSM as what it's Today, However in 2006, there is a differerences between few mappers and resulted on the 1st word of war in believer of opensource & mappers' owned maps.

Then nearing to 2007 & continue till Aug'08, survey was put up to commercialise malsingmaps and suprisingly majority support malsingmaps to be commercialized i.e copyrighted the maps & sell to commercial interested parties. Nevertheless, the maps will still be free for contributors. Although survey was put-up by the admin, certain mappers & even the admin are actually disagreed on the commercialization. & also impending "Gray" area on how Garmin going to re-act to this issue!

Thus, it was decided that those mappers that disagreed on commercialization to pull-out from MSM & set-up new forum..i.e malfreemaps.com and in the beginning, malfreemaps will provide updates to malsingmaps too...However on the day the new forum set-up, things doesn't works as what it should be and thus...the emminent break-off of MSM & Malfreemaps... sad.gif doh.gif

Hehe..u should knows by now who are those mappers that disagree on commercialization biggrin.gif Well, although there's differences in opinion, thing will probably cool down in future...Well, the 2006 mapper that pull out from MSM has returned as the new mapper to EPM & NPM & probably PRK-R too...so wait & see-lah biggrin.gif

At this point of time, if u ask me which maps is more up to date, I will say malfreemaps bcos it's updated every week & no tedious unlocked code needed. Progress on Melaka, Johor & Singapore in malfreemaps is catching up very fast too.. thumbup.gif

QUOTE(chicaman @ Nov 16 2008, 02:43 AM)
Malfreemaps? Can tell me more bout it, I am lazy to read all over it. Then I'll add it to the first page. Thanks

No both are consider competing website already. Suppose to be win-win but now total break-off...U either choose Malsingmaps or malfreemaps.

Malfreemaps are more up to date & POIs are more prominent for eg logos of Shell, petronas, Esso, Giant, Tesoc & etc. however they are starting new on Melaka, Johor & singapore maps which is suprisingly fast from the day 1 of breakoff...Too bad up to todate no Sabah & Sarawak mappers yet.

Malsingmaps are less updated in North Central & East coast bcos the last updates was in Sept'08 whereas, malfreemaps has been updated ~ 5 times since break-off!! However, contributions in malsingmaps will not be updated in malfreemaps & vice-versa..Each forums have their own contributors.

So what u se now in malfreemaps & malsingmaps are different!...In future..no idea..
QUOTE(chicaman @ Nov 16 2008, 12:31 PM)
Oh, ok,

So that means Malfreemap will continue to contribute to Malsing Map? But is Malsing Map's update gonna be included in Malfreemap?

Whoaaa..din read my earlier posting-kah biggrin.gif KL, Prk, NPM, Seremban & EPM..for sure it's malfreemaps...but for Melaka, Johor & Singapore, at this point of time MSM still ahead but Malfreemaps is catching up pretty fast...as what Ajay mentioned, if u wanted to keep both maps, just change one of the maps as gmapsup2.img instead of gmapsupp.img

Not sure whether SE W760 is symbian bcos current Garmin or even mapking is based on Nokia Symbian models. U can try & check the 1st page link to Garmin to check compartability or else I think the only naviagtion that suite this phone is only Garmin Maps which dun offer any route navigation for M'sia

U can get better deal & more choices from malsingmaps.com Vendors's corner thumbup.gif Almost all the well-known GPS sellers are there inclusive those in Penang..u can get 2nd hand unit also from the Trading section

My advice..standalone is good such as those NUVI however if in future u wanted to venture into mapping, tracklogs & playing back your recording to track how many KM of travelling, how fast or max speed or wanted to submit roads that not in the maps for mappers..u will be crying hard because 90% of NUVI (stand alone GPSr) cannot do tracking ore track recording!! doh.gif

FYI, & others, the Garmin MXT that installed in lotsa Nokia..able to record tracks thumbup.gif

Garmin is good & there are lotsa pros & cons between using standalone & the all-in one Nokia/PDA GPSr

It's all depending on you..Stand-alone- big screen quick acquisition of signals BUT no track recording function except certain model (U need to check wth the seller which model having tracking capability

Nokia/PDA all in one - as said..all0in one easier to carry ...whatever u want from the gadgets..u name it all there... biggrin.gif ..BUT this all-in one having small screen (No good for older ppl), slow in acquiring satelite & etc

It's up to u..pls read more & do research at the link in my siggy (Malsingmaps)

QUOTE(runemastertan @ Nov 22 2008, 10:19 AM)
Ya I believe in you all, but Nokia seem to be more expensive, and my dad want a standalone sweat.gif Cannot do anything about it
Wah, then which GPS device is ok? I mean any recommendation on which to buy? I thought wanna buy Garmin, but not good?

Buy the cheapest Symbian phone & pair it wth the cheapest BT GPSr.....This option probably about RM600 2nd hand.. (Nokia 6120 classic + BT GPSr)..otherwise get 2nd hand all-in 1 Nokia such as N78 or 6110 navigator...~RM750 2nd hand

Hehe. Sharteef & me was having TT the other day & I was pretty shock that this N79 having the mother of all GPS chipset!! (SirfIII...similar to other standalone Garmin GPSr duch as selected NUVI & the mother tracker...60Csx!!)..Thus during that day I tested and that thing really fast....even at the five foot way of the kopitiam thumbup.gif shocking.gif

I can say that the speed of acquisition rivaled/comparable to those external BT GPSr

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Nov 23 2008, 05:17 PM)
yea like u said 1st time so what is the problem? Its only 1 time thing.

Yea either 1 is active at one time. If there is a call coming thru and i am using the garmin i will use loudspeaker.

But if u compare external GPS can lock fast and in any big structure places it still gets full bar.

QUOTE(sharkteef @ Nov 23 2008, 09:00 PM)
btw i can only suspect that the chipset is a GSC3LT. i have no way of concluding which sirfstarIII chip it is. only supsect.
only 1 way to find out which is to dissect the fon. but i aint doing that. too new. wait 1 year warranty habis then i dissect unless someone else dissects first.
