Yeah, it is, but so does the whole country (and most parts of the Western world for that matter).
bhypp's view of Sydney and Melbourne is extremely biased. Cronulla was a one-off event and you can't use that to support your claim that racism is rife in Sydney. It is not. Racism is not an issue in major cities in Australia. If anything, Sydney is the most culturally-diverse city in Australia.

Btw, this thread is turning into Kopitiam-styled discussions.

Property price are overpriced since long ago.
Jobless figure will increase as time goes by, more idiots will lose their houses.
Sydney ... well ... I don't know what will happen but everybody looks calm enough on the streets.

Normal Australian citizens basically don't care OR have no idea what is happening here.

The national reserve bank is nearly empty and the government is giving out money to the senior citizens ...
You guys should know what I am trying to say here.

Not yet. Recession is defined when there is 2 consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.
The next quarter would be December.

ABS has not updated its site, or AFAIK, for the September quarter but the June quarter was quite shit. So assuming September had a negative growth, and then in December as well will only Australia truly be in recession.

well i admit it was biased....coz im from melb never a sydney resident, only been there for a short while only....

but then again....im not saying that sydney is a racist city...well if u guys can recall i said sydney's reputation is tarnsihed by that incident...and with that in comparison melb is better as we havnt got any issues along the racial lines....well at least never as big or as notorious as cronulla.....so in that case sydeny - 1, melb - 0, so judging by that thing alone...can i not say melb is better?

well glad taht u reason it out and i seriously appreciate it.... notworthy.gif notworthy.gif sorry for my ignorant posts before as some sydney siders started it off and what i did was just like a knee jerk reaction to it....i mean i did put up points about things melb hav to offer but i got those go google it up urself kinda reply....this is a discussion / Q&A thread so it is really distasteful when someone does that...and esp when they are saying sth bad about melb.....

Guys, I know there has been rivally between Melbourne and Sydney since time inmemorial (or since 1901 at least; see Canberra), but we don't have to get all emotional on which place is the best, is the liveliest, the best for public transport etc. Sydney is Sydney, Melbourne is Melbourne. By all means talk about life there, but you don't have to start making comparisons!

And lets be honest here: unless one has lived in both cities for a extended preiod of time, how is one to compare? How many of us here have stayed in both cities?

Melbourne VS Sydney? laugh.gif

I am amazed some of you Malaysians here are actually defending the city they live in in another country.

Why not you defend our own country, Malaysia instead? With all the racism going on and the weird politics and the external laughter from other countries.

Some of you here really need to open your eyes bigger ... seriously.

When you're in Malaysia, you quarrel in Malaysia. Now you're in Australia, you quarrel in Australia. How long do you think this will continue?

are you living anywhere in aus?

there's something that you actually need to know, we defend because we love where we're staying, because it's worth defending. it doesn't matter where is better, syd or melb, bcz we know both are great places to stay.

i think most malaysians will defend malaysia if needed to, i don't know how you came out with the conclusion that we don't "defend" our country. but will you be able to defend it with conviction like how any tom d*** and harry defend cities in australia?

Erm, instead of competing, why don't we all post what each city has to offer, post it on the top page, so that more students can have an even better overview of the cities and make a great choice for themselves ba =P

I'll start off with Perth, a peaceful city, calm, soothing, nice beaches to enjoy on a slacky saturday, nice multicultural city, and loads of beautiful scenes around here. Plus if you wanna feel back at home / asian, Perth would definately suit you =P

I don't see anyone forcing down their opinions onto another. Quite clear that people are just justifying their reasons for preference (along with some random people stating Sydney/Melbourne is overrated without justifying, but let's leave those no-value out).

What's your definition of defending? Simply stating their reasons for saying so? I've stated why I prefer Melbourne overall but I leave it as that if anyone disagrees. After all, anyone would be biased in the place they live in.

I'm living in Sydney. I wouldn't defend any place I live in. Not Malaysia not Sydney. Why? None of them is perfect.

I don't think majority of Malaysians will defend Malaysia like you said.

The reason I'm saying whatever I had said in my previous post is summarized by Ver (read quote below)

well i think ur totally off the line here...its studying in aus thread very clearly stated here and of course we wont to into defending each ones hometown....very clearly not relevant...and whos not opening theirs eyes now? din even get the thread right and now u wan us to so called open their eyes?! doh.gif doh.gif

anyway another thing about opening eyes....yes seeing / getting exposed is one thing but that doesnt mean one's brain can interpret / understand things exactly the same...what im trying to say is even if we all are able to see the big picture / not being ignorant but our opinions will be different still....and what's so bad about having and open discussion here....or as u put it...quarreling over here....yes it may get heated sometimes , but thats all part of the discussion.....

it seems like ur carrying over this Msian attitude of not talking things over and just sweep everything under the rug....when theres a disagreement....we should sort it out...discuss...not just all keep quiet and let the tension build in the background as the issue is not even being talked over....let alone getting solved....

and u would only defend sth when its perfect?! good luck then...i dont think u will be defending anything in ur life ever again as nth in life is perfect....but for me....i take msia as a whole its good stuff and its imperfection too...whatever bad things goin on in the country is not the country's fault but the ppl running it or living in it....as for Melb of course its far from perfect....its streets was littered with mob boss, stupid useless non-concession public transport....its shit weather...and its lack of sense australian-ness.....not even like a cosmopolitan city as in the streets there are 5:1 ratio of asians to non asians...but still i like it here...

LOL guys... what's with the fighting among Melbourne and Sydney? tongue.gif

I haven't been to Syd so can't comment... but Melb is a nice place to live in. Sure, there are certain short comings but which place doesn't? It's a beautiful place with lots of art pieces beautifying the city, and when summer comes there'll be an eye feast when the strap tops and shorts come out biggrin.gif

Like what bhypp said, the city's so diverse that it doesn't seem like a angmoh place anymore. However, being a cultural melting pot ain't exactly a bad thing either as you'll get to experience different kinds of stuff. Nevertheless, when you move further outwards to more rural areas it's still pretty much dominated by Caucasians, or Aborigines depending on where you go.

Shit weather... can't do jack about it unless you have some supernatural powers to control Mother Nature...

Yet I still think home's the best place to be as that's where most of our friends and families are.

Well to continue what Ver started off, here goes for Melbourne:

Pros:
1. It's a cultural melting pot as mentioned above.
2. The city's beautiful, funky, and trendy. Seriously. And all my friends who've been in different places in Australia agree that Melbourne has the most pretty people around. Don't ask me why, I dunno too.
3. There's lots of international events going on - Melb F1, Australian Open, Philip Island Motor GP etc... if you're interested in them that is.
4. Wines galore... if you love alcohol in your blood... not me though.
5. Shopping heaven, for girls especially. Not as much for guys though.
6. Public transport is quite expansive (a bit expensive as well), but it's getting crappier to be honest. Still, it's better than back in M'sia's... but it'll soon deteriorate into shit state if no improvements are made.
7. Loads of scenic places to go... and nothing beats the view of the ocean with great cliffs. With sunset. And the blue sea.
8. People are relatively friendly... it's easy to smile or even start a conversation with strangers (be cautious though of course). You don't get this often in M'sia, or any other Asian countries I guess.

Cons:
1. It's not home, no matter how good it is.
2. Shit weather... 4 seasons in ONE DAY. Oh yes, the weather's borderline.
3. It's VERY crowded in the city. Not that it's not in KL, but it's so much more hectic than JB, where I'm from.
4. Far too much alcohol around. Yup, you'll see drunkards and wackos all over the city at night, doing stupid stuff. Again, it's not like we don't have buggers in M'sia either.
5. No mamak. Nuff said. And damn it... I have still yet to find proper wantan mee. That's just me being picky.
6. It's not cheap, especially near the city. Prices of things increase subtly but quickly, and before you know it... pokkai liao.

Just these at the moment... feel free to add more.
