Can anyone give me the lowdown on the black metal scene here in Malaysia? I read an article which said that it was banned and that Mayhem were turned away from performing. However, it was written a long time ago. Is it still in effect? are black metal bands banned from performing/recording?

Performing, yeah. The ruling is still in effect sadly. But I don't know about recording since they would need to be in the underground scene to do so. No publicly released albums that's for sure.

One of the articles I read said that the authorities were concerned about black metal 'which found it's start with Metallica in the 80s'

Can I ask, is the black metal here, anti-Islam? like similarly in Europe it's (generally) anti-Christianity.

In Europe you can burn a bible and nothing will happen to you, religion is questioned, belittled and ridiculed on a daily basis.

Here and Asia in general, that's not the case. It's still a very religiously conservative country, publicly speaking against religion is pretty much a no no (correct me if I'm wrong) so I expect, that not only would the authorities be onto you but also irate Muslims baying for blood. Those bands are brave souls.

Actly, if the kids here understood what really was going in Black Metal, maybe they won't burn the Qurans. heck i actually would believe that they hold really close to it.

But yeah, the stupid thing with the metallica issue, Black METAL. METALlica. Sad ain't it?

Yes, it's their choice. Also their choice to listen and make any music they want.

Anyway, I'm not sure where you came up with that statement. Nowhere in my paragraph did I reference anything regarding that. All I said was that they are brave, as people here don't take kindly to anti-religion statements/actions.

Also, it should be said, being anti-religion is not a pre-requisite for liking black metal. There are many followers of religion who just like it for the music, and there are also bands who don't mention anything about religion. At the end of the day, it is just a style of music, just so happens, quite a fair bit of it has anti-religious sentiments.

For me, if you really understand something, you won't blindly something that's against it. For example, could be a biased one, i am quite religious in my own way (muslim), but I enjoy metal songs. Regardless of its genre in Metal.

it is always like that. Media judge people by it cover. You can wear sexy outfit and perform in stage and tv and appear as cover page in entertainment magazine or mainstream media, but you can't appear with spike, leather jacket, bullet belt, tight denim, skull ring, leather boot and Farah Fawcett hairstyle.

heheh nice to know that there are other people who listens to this kind of music....
very few of us malaysian enjoy it, metal in general

when i play my music in the car, people will say " lagu ape ko dengar ni? pening kepale aku....." LOL
i dun giv a damn cuz 1st) its my car; and 2nd) i LOVE it

Galneryus is not black metal

Yeah those kids think that listening to black metal they have to worship satan or shit like that... Although I stop listening to black metal stuff more to death metal, those who like them only listening to the music not because they worship satan. Im sure those kids are just listening to it to be cool and dont really enjoy the music

Black metal bands dont even want to perform here or shit because the supporters are not large enough.. Not worth to fly all the way from US/Europe to perform for a crowd of 100 people

Very few Black metal bands actually worship Satan, anyway. They use Satan as a symbol, a metaphor against religion. They are anti-religion. They don't believe in a God or a Devil. It's only symbolism. Satanism has two branches. Lavayan Satanism (symbolic, the worship of self. Forms the vast majority of proclaimed [I]Satantists) and Theistic Satanism (The worship of the character Satan as portrayed in Abrahamic texts, accounts for a very small amount) The vast majority of Black Metal fans who call themselves Satanists, I expect fall into the symbolic worshipers.

I am a huge music fan, I'll play everything from Disco to Drum n Bass to Hip Hop to Country to Acoustic, but the moment I put on anything like Punk or Metal, people will be saying, 'turn that shit off'. Someone said to me - I hate that hip hop you play, but I can at least bare it, that metal stuff you play is too loud...and then they follow up with, the obligatory comment...'all they do is scream'

In a way, I like that I listen to this rebellious music, that most people just don't like or understand.
