Greetings metalheads! I'm new to the forum. I'm from England originally, currently living in Kuala Lumpur. After lurking this thread I figured this was the best place to ask...Where's the best place to find out about gigs going on in KL? Websites/magazines/venues? etc. I'd love to check out the scene on this side of the world.
Cheers for your help guys. |

Thanks for the pointers Angel. Will definitely check those out. I've gone past Sogo a few times so know exactly where to look now. Cheers

I've done a bit of snooping around and found some good websites that list gigs. So hopefully when I have time, I can head out and check out the local bands.

They started as your run of the mill metalcore band.
From the recent stuff I've heard, they seem to flirt between hard rock and power ballads but throw in metal riffs and other influences. |

QUOTE(Angel of Deth @ Nov 24 2010, 05:15 PM) We're not talking groove like disco or something that makes you want to dance, haha. It has a certain groove to it. It's not super fast like thrash riffs, not fast and complex like death metal riffs. Slower and heavy. |

Well, as far as British bands go, I've been listening to a lot of Electric Wizard, and God is an astronaut (ok, technically not British since they're Irish) recently.
Other than that it's been a real mish mash, I've been listening to the latest Burzum album and Sad Legend from Korea, who I think are amazing. Who are your favorites at the moment? |

Cool. thanks for the link. Will give it a look around.
I enjoy thrash as well, all those bands you mentioned are awesome, but overall I much prefer thrash's heavier cousin, death metal. |

Can anyone give me the lowdown on the black metal scene here in Malaysia? I read an article which said that it was banned and that Mayhem were turned away from performing. However, it was written a long time ago. Is it still in effect? are black metal bands banned from performing/recording?
One of my favorite black metal songs/bands |

One of the articles I read said that the authorities were concerned about black metal 'which found it's start with Metallica in the 80s'
lol, at least know what you're arguing about if you want to ban something. Can I ask, is the black metal here, anti-Islam? like similarly in Europe it's (generally) anti-Christianity. |

In Europe you can burn a bible and nothing will happen to you, religion is questioned, belittled and ridiculed on a daily basis.
Here and Asia in general, that's not the case. It's still a very religiously conservative country, publicly speaking against religion is pretty much a no no (correct me if I'm wrong) so I expect, that not only would the authorities be onto you but also irate Muslims baying for blood. Those bands are brave souls. This post has been edited by CargoCult: Nov 25 2010, 03:25 PM |

Yes, it's their choice. Also their choice to listen and make any music they want.
Anyway, I'm not sure where you came up with that statement. Nowhere in my paragraph did I reference anything regarding that. All I said was that they are brave, as people here don't take kindly to anti-religion statements/actions. Added on November 25, 2010, 3:55 pm QUOTE(Kyoyagami @ Nov 25 2010, 03:48 PM) Actly, if the kids here understood what really was going in Black Metal, maybe they won't burn the Qurans. heck i actually would believe that they hold really close to it. Care to expand on this? I'm not sure I follow. But yeah, the stupid thing with the metallica issue, Black METAL. METALlica. Sad ain't it? Also, it should be said, being anti-religion is not a pre-requisite for liking black metal. There are many followers of religion who just like it for the music, and there are also bands who don't mention anything about religion. At the end of the day, it is just a style of music, just so happens, quite a fair bit of it has anti-religious sentiments. This post has been edited by CargoCult: Nov 25 2010, 03:55 PM |

QUOTE(WintersuN @ Nov 26 2010, 10:37 AM) Galneryus is not black metal Very few Black metal bands actually worship Satan, anyway. They use Satan as a symbol, a metaphor against religion. They are anti-religion. They don't believe in a God or a Devil. It's only symbolism. Satanism has two branches. Lavayan Satanism (symbolic, the worship of self. Forms the vast majority of proclaimed [I]Satantists) and Theistic Satanism (The worship of the character Satan as portrayed in Abrahamic texts, accounts for a very small amount) The vast majority of Black Metal fans who call themselves Satanists, I expect fall into the symbolic worshipers.Yeah those kids think that listening to black metal they have to worship satan or shit like that... Although I stop listening to black metal stuff more to death metal, those who like them only listening to the music not because they worship satan. Im sure those kids are just listening to it to be cool and dont really enjoy the music Black metal bands dont even want to perform here or shit because the supporters are not large enough.. Not worth to fly all the way from US/Europe to perform for a crowd of 100 people Added on November 26, 2010, 2:09 pm QUOTE(ezouL87 @ Nov 25 2010, 08:30 PM) heheh nice to know that there are other people who listens to this kind of music.... Metal and heavy guitar driven music really seems to be the last truly underground music. I am a huge music fan, I'll play everything from Disco to Drum n Bass to Hip Hop to Country to Acoustic, but the moment I put on anything like Punk or Metal, people will be saying, 'turn that shit off'. Someone said to me - I hate that hip hop you play, but I can at least bare it, that metal stuff you play is too loud...and then they follow up with, the obligatory comment...'all they do is scream'very few of us malaysian enjoy it, metal in general when i play my music in the car, people will say " lagu ape ko dengar ni? pening kepale aku....." LOL i dun giv a damn cuz 1st) its my car; and 2nd) i LOVE it In a way, I like that I listen to this rebellious music, that most people just don't like or understand. QUOTE(brokenglass @ Nov 27 2010, 10:59 AM) i'd followed most of the metal gig in KL since 2000, n never one i saw quran being burn, in 2004 I also in the historic gig in Seremban that being manipulated by media as satan worship fest haha, I think this is a great example of people going by hearsay and getting caught up in media hype. People think there are Quran burnings, however, you're a regular attendee of gigs and have never seen one, sounds like the media just want to whip up some sensationalist stories. It's also not surprising to hear that the media twisted things to suit their story about the gig in Seremban. |

QUOTE(brokenglass @ Nov 28 2010, 05:36 PM) bcoz of tis gig also my friend stop from going to gig n not listen to metal music as before. He's being set-up by the police, his urine test are +ve drugs although he's not taking drug n he's not even smoking. he'd stayed 1 week in lockup n head being shaved like prisoner This kind of police action sounds like what happened in Britain in the 70s/80s. Trying to paint people as criminals because they don't fit in with the status quo, a complete overreaction to something they don't understand.Do you know anywhere where I can find gig listings? I check a few pages, but I didn't hear about that gig. This post has been edited by CargoCult: Nov 28 2010, 05:48 PM |

Anyone recommend me bands like Eyehategod, Iron Monkey and Crowbar? That southern metal, sludgy sound. (not Down, I already know them) I'm particularly interested in bands that have an apparent influence of hardcore punk, like the aforementioned Eyehategod.
Also, recommend me your favorite death metal songs with awesome guitar solos, was listening to Obituary Slowly we rot and I love those screeching guitar sounds. Thanks guys This post has been edited by CargoCult: Dec 2 2010, 04:04 PM |

Sorry to change the subject guys, just intrigued to find out who are your favorite Asian bands?
For me - Church of misery (Japan) Sad legend (Korea) Mono (Japan) Envy (Japan) there's also heap load of interesting Japanese hardcore punk/powerviolence bands. I once saw an all girl trio who played hardcore punk, can't remember their name now, though. anyways, I'd like to hear your opinions |

lol, maybe i'm tired and it's gone totally over my head, but i'm totally not sure if you're being serious.
Anyways, there are plenty of Asian bands people consider to be brilliant. As I see it, Japan has the biggest scene followed by Korea, then after that I guess it's a toss up between Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and maybe the Philippines since it seems to be quite Americanised. Actually I saw a documentary on Punk in China which was an eye opener. This post has been edited by CargoCult: Dec 9 2010, 04:59 PM |
