Dear All Nikon-kaki,

I've been using my Nikon P5000 (P&S With P/S/A/M) mode for 2 years and I find that I have used it to the maximum limits a P&S served.

I'm looking forward to upgrade to DSLR but then my budget only allows me to get the D60 with Kit Lens (brand new).

Somehow, I would like to equip the D60 with a lens suitable for shooting those short DOF picture with the subject in clear crisp but the background in blur. I got to know that I need a lens with low F-stop, and so far for non-macro lens, the standard zoom lens go as low as f2.8.

FYI, I am planning to get this cam to do shooting from sky while paragliding in tandem (means i piggyback only, the instructor is maneuvering). I know wide angle and zoom never meets, if met with an all round lens also with serious trade offs in quality for certain zoom range...

Can recommend a lens which are value for money, leaning towards the cheap side, that can have zoom higher than 55mm, f-stop of 2.8? Oh yeah, with VR or Stabilization on lens coz the D60 don't have inbody stabilization.

I've browsed DPREVIEW until mouse also wanna smoke but still got no idea which one serves the purpose...hahaha laugh.gif

Okay the limitation here is budget.
Get the D60 kit, sell the lens kit if you want a bit more money and if you're not using it at all.
For me VR / OS (sigma equivalent) / VC (tamron equivalent) is useful for 50mm and above..

1. A very very good all rounder lens
Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR II DX lens NEW About RM25xx (better than sigma 18-200 and even tamron 18-270 but expensive)

2. Above 70mm lens with VR but not VR II
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Nikkor AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor IF-ED NEW Around RM18xx

3. A very good contant/fixed aperture
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 NEW About RM14xx & above

4. Another very good medium range
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 NEW RM13xx & above

Just a note, tamron has quite a number of all rounder lens like 18-200, 18-250, 18-270, 28-300. Not all have VC (Vibration Compensation). SOME newer models with built in motor have VC.

Whatever you choose, make sure you choose lenses with BUILT IN MOTOR because D40/D40x/D60 doesn't have built in AF motor.

For D40/D60 users, I would think that SB400 or SB600 should be more than enough. SB800 or SB900 is too heavy and big size if use on D40/D60 body. If you need to carry few lens plus SB800 or SB900, your shoulder will be hurt tongue.gif

If you have read kenrockwell website before, you will know that he is using SB400 on D40 and able to produce very nice photos. I have own a SB600 but sometimes I also lazy to carry out due to the size of it. Unless there is an event and I need to use it then only I will carry out tongue.gif

Dppreview said Tamron 18-270 is as good as if not better than Nikkor 18-200mm. And this Tamron is with VC one.

Ya, agree. Even SB-600 is quite heavy on D60 body. Cant imagine if with SB-900

Got my new tamron 17-50 f/2.8 yesterday.... woohoo

I went to a shop in penang. i know the sellers there..

The new stock for tamron 17-50 for nikon mount came in that shop around 4-5 days ago .. i went there yesterday evening and there's only two 17-50 tammy's left and one is already booked...so only left one... THE ONLY ONE wow..last one in that shop

Tried and tested both sigma 17-70 and tamron 17-50 (also tested with focus chart) and took the tamron because:

1. Constant f/2.8 from 17mm to 50mm - need "cari makan lens" for weddings biggrin.gif
2. Body quality - i feel that the sigma's built is still of high quality but the body texture is somewhat undesirable and prone to scratching and/or peeling.

A note about the sigma 17-70 though... the MFD is realllly awesome.. by using manual focus i can put a finger just a few cm away from the lens and it can still focus... wow.. really impressed by that. seriously. a totally fun and creative lens.

Tamron 18-270 has a clear advantage because of the extra 70mm length. Another good thing about it is that it still keeps the same f/6.3 even at a longer 270mm range compared to it's other 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 and 18-250 f/3.5-6.3 lenses.

image quality wise i dont know and i dont think it will differ much from 18-200 VR f/3.5-5.6

if im comparing 18-200mm from nikon, tamron and sigma, of course the nikkor 18-200 VR wins hands down because of the VR II and also because of the bigger aperture f5.6 at 200mm compared to sigma & tamron's f6.3 at 200mm and the lack of VR equivalent tech on both.

Tamron 18-270mm image is quite sharp, even compared to nikon 18-200mm. It's VC also quite reliable as it allow bout 3 stops down.
as alpha compony said, Tamron 18-200mm lack of vibration compensation. But I think Sigma got its own anti-vibration.
However Tamron and Sigma is much cheaper..

Nikon has VR - Vibration Reduction

Sigma has OS - Optical Stabilizer

Tamron has VC - Vibration Compensation

lenses that doesnt have either OS or VC doesnt have the VR equivalent tech.

btw, how much is tamron 18-270mm for nikon mount with af motor?

please comment and give advice on how to improve my hdr pic?
