Hi all,
My sister who will graduate soon plans to go to work in Singapore. Can anyone tell me if the economy situation is really bad in Singapore?

A friend sent me this site and it sounds pretty scary in Singapore too.. doh.gif

The impact still not that hard yet, next year the impact will be stronger.

I can only see most of the corporate cutting cost, stop this expenses that expenses. Bigger company retrenched to lower down their cost, etc.....

Job vacancy are much lesser compare to last 2 years.... That 2 years till now is the best opportunity to find work.

No worries, just come to Singapore and look for job. My company looking for graphic&web designer.

Dude, i knew that. That's what i reiriterated in my bracket lar.

Im asking, whether isit by law PR must be offered 13 months salary? as opposed to the normaly 12 mths salary. I.e. whether PR really have such a privelage?
*
Even not PR can entitle for 13 month salary, 13 month is common practice in Singapore but not a must. But so far all my fren i know entitle 13 months no matter they are PR or not.

@Joshua, nicvoo

Thanks for the information, but instead of money conversion issues, I still have some personal issues to be considered. Anyway, thank you so much for being so helpful.

@Sukhoi37

I do understand how people feel when they encounter stupid questions that were repeated over hundred times in the past, but some how the answers will not be always the same, especially after the economical disaster recently. I heard that lots of companies are scaling down, so I worried that may be these companies may not be interested in fresh grads in this period. That's why I would rather get some more recent needs of ICT fresh grads.

Cheers. tongue.gif

The company i currently working in no need to worry about retrenchment coz just recently i heard a few guys from one department are resigning.

I've heard that this department has the habit of domino resigning (If one fella go, expect the rest to follow like sheep) and the unfortunate thing is i'm in but only just to learn new skills coz my primary function is as an IT facilitator. Donno why in singapore, especially for marine industry, those workers who come from india, when they leave a company, the rest in the company will follow suite. Rather depressing really.

Actually i want 2 stick around so that i can learn new things in the marine industry but most of the time the seniors who are indian nationals dont seem to be so keen to teach new skills, even when i'm on the job together with them. I also cant just simply change since the field i'm in is totally new to me and who would want 2 hire a freshie who has no prior exp in this field of work.

So far my boss has said that he would send me on some courses relating to marine inspection field but thats only next year. One training course i do have is the ISO certified internal auditor course which i've completed but its just an add-on and nothing related to marine engineering.

What worrying is that quite a number of seniors are leaving about 2/3 of the department. If thats the case who am i going to learn from anyway?

Nearly close to 50% percent is from india, no china fella btw.

So hard communicating with them isnt so bad. But i'm not to keen on leaving so soon since i only worked there for 9 months and if i not mistaken if you leave too early, then mom will black list you or something to that effect.

I only leave if i am confident that i have the necessary skills and certs to get a better position or job, but unfortunately i'm a freshie in this field. My pay aint so bad and work environment isnt that bad either, its just that training is the main issue i'm worried about and career advancement.

Also sometimes it gets quite boring since now not so many jobs so spend time at office where i can catch up on my reading and test new and learn new stuff on IT. But after awhile it gets boring since it get recurring. Hopefully i can get more on-job training since my company got a tender from SRC for 3 years contract.

Oh, so you are a civil engineer? Quite free eh you can surf at lowyat. Not on site most of the time or are you a pen pusher?

Yeah i think quite some time my dad worked in singapore. But then again it gives a bad impression on oneself since you cant land a stable job and continuously finding another company.

I know a HRD fella who is wary when she sees a resume full of companies since job hopping and not retaining a job for at least a year is fishy to her. Like she said "Something lit up that fella's arse to be moving here and there". But my current company got some old timers, 10 years and counting. Maybe they got kids so need stability, i usually start finding a new job after the 2nd year if things are ok.
