I would suggest you get Synology. I have installed 3 units, and so far, all the units works flawlessly in SME environment, using it as a file server & backup server.

Synology is reliable.

I had also installed 2 units of the Buffalo 2 bay one.... 1 was extremely problematic.... their recovery process also a little different, since they the boot sector needs to be stored on the Disks, while the Synology already have a boot ROM.

At the end of the day, it depends on Budget vs Reliability.... you decide....

Not so much when the NAS is running, but when a disk "do" fail, how is the recovery process like?
*
Then I would get Synology notworthy.gif

I don't know what happen what A disk fail in a NAS but I go get one of my disk failed in my PC before. MBR, partition table, file system corrupted. End up have to do disk recovery using Testdisk for 1 day rebuild those partition table and etc.

Did experience HDD failure before on my synology NAS. I shut down the NAS, takeout the HDD and replace a new 1. ON back the NAS and let it generate back the data. Didn't take longtime with the 2TB HDD. But I don't remember need to set anything in the control panel after change the HDD.

1 thing to learn about raid HDD is, don't buy HDD in 1 lot and same batch. Failure at the sametime is high.

I get it for files storage and need RAID 1 or maybe RAID 10 as those files are very important laugh.gif

I guess NAS suit me since I no need any server feature, I believe it is more secure without server features  notworthy.gif

Thanks for help, any recommended NAS brand or any more affordable Synology sweat.gif

You need to plan your backup well if the file are very important to you. Depend on NAS or RAID doesn't guarantee and 100% the data is safe.

Hardware fail, disaster and human problem is a list you need to consider.

Cloud storage is too small. Require to pay for bigger storage and maintain. And the network too.

I m using traditional storage solution too. But plan for 100% safe backup solution for the 3 problem that I mention.

hey all - just wanna share my recent purchased .. wanna see if there's anything i can do to speed things up

1. Bought a WD live book duo (6tb)
2. Connected to a router ( Unifi router - the one came with the package )
3. Trying to transfer data over WIFI ( wireless )
4. Speed im getting max is 2.40 to 2.58 MB/s ( this is using the normal windows copy and paste transfer )
5. External HDD connected to laptop ( s7 ) through USB 3.0. External HDD is 2.0
6. When i connected the external HDD to the live book directly using the usb 2.0 port at the back, the speed is lower than 1MB/s

Question:
1. How to speed up the process of transferring data to the Live book duo?
2. I have another 1 TB external HDD - with the current rate , i think it will take 1 week to transfer everything smile.gif

Thanks in advance ....

Try another computer..

For router, I think that's the best speed you can get.. Limitation on route cpu usually.

You can get better speed if connected to gigabit switch.

sorry - so what you are saying - connect the router( TM's orange color ) to a gigabit switch to get a better wired connection?

TM router is 100Mbps only.. if you wanna test, just direct connect between laptop and WD. Use static IP for both router and WD.

What I said before, you need gigabit switch.. Both computer and WD connected to 1GB switch. So both you computer and WD running on gigabit network.. Connect 1 port from switch to orange router for internet connection.

Make sure you use cat6 or cat5e cable.. Don't use blue cable (4x) coming with dlink router. That's cable connect be used for gigabit. If you see the cable you can see there only 4 pair or wired instead om 8.

Correct a bit, no offence.
Pair = 2x, so 4 pair = 8 strands.
Those manufacturer like DLink uses 2-pair Cat5 cable on cheap modem, but some do supply full 4-pair.
But as suggested, buy a cheap TPLink Gigabit switch and the speed will fly~ thumbup.gif

One of my HDDs in my zpool failed. For some reason it just doesnt power up anymore and I have to replace it with a new one. Since I am on that I thought I give some indication of the speed that I am achieving on resilvering the ZFS pool (2x 3TB WD Green, mirrored ZFS pool). I am reaching speeds of 85-90MBps.

guys i hope somebody could help me with this problem:

i have a desktop pc with 4 hard drives full of data
now the pc gone kaput and since i have a macbook now i don't need to use it anymore
i'm planning to get a NAS so that i can use all the hard drives that i have wirelessly with my macbook
if i insert those hard drives into the NAS, can i still use the data (the hard drives are formatted as NTFS using windows 7 that is my previous desktop setup) or will it be formatted and become a newly erased HDD?

You can use back the data but not is this way. You have to takeout the data and reformat the hdd to your NAS prefer format. Than download back to the hdd.

If you prefer RAID, consider your all 4hdd have a same capacity.
